R-0123 Buckets Of Rain - Bob shares vocals on this track recorded at Secret Sound Studios, New York, Oct 1975
For some reason Bette sings "Nuggets Of Rain" instead of "Buckets"...

This West German promo LP includes Buckets Of Rain by Bette Midler from the German release ATL 50 212-Z (not yet shown here) on Side 2. Midler is misspelled "Middler" on the Side 2 record label, but is correct on the rear sleeve.

"Desire" - Quadraphonic vinyl releases, Columbia PCQ 33893 (USA)/CBS Q 86003 (Spain)/CBS SBPQ 234778 (Australia/New Zealand), Jan 1976:
For full details of these quadraphonic releases see the Desire page in International Album Releases (Regular).

Columbia PCQ 33893 (USA) - front scan by Olav Langum ("Quadraphonic" at top left)

This album was created using the Columbia "SQ" quadraphonic system and has mistakes in Joey and Romance In Durango as listed below. Another lesser difference is that in One More Cup Of Coffee there is apparently an intrusive scraping sound just before the third verse, again something that was edited out of the regular stereo release
CBS Q 86003 (NL) - front scan by Hans Seegers ("Quadraphonic" at bottom centre)

CBS Q 86003 (Spain) - front scan by Hans Seegers (gold border, "Quadraphonic" at top centre)

CBS SBPQ 234778 (Australia) - front photo by Peter Lindberg ("Quadraphonic" at lower left)

CBS SBPQ 234778 (New Zealand) - front scan by Manuel García Jara ("Quadraphonic" sticker on Stereo sleeve)

R-0124 Joey (Bob Dylan/Jacques Levy) - at the end of verse three there is a vocal mistake - "to the boss I say he said" - this must have been edited out on the regular release

R-0125 Romance In Durango (Bob Dylan/Jacques Levy) - again at the end of verse three there is a vocal mistake - "In the face of God will appear" - this too must have been edited out on the regular release. It's also reported there is an outstandingly bad trumpet track that was also removed from the regular stereo release!

Rob van Estrik says: "The entire album was drastically remixed by Don DeVito from the master session tapes for quadraphonic replay. The resulting LP sounds entirely different from the regular release and is consequently one of the most collectable Dylan albums. Contrary to what was stated in Isis #50, the CD version of the album is NOT the Quadraphonic remix." This is confirmed by Les Kokay, who has sent me a detailed analysis of the differences between the current CD version and the Quadraphonic mix.

My copy of Columbia PCQ 33893 has the same rear sleeve and inner sleeve as the regular Columbia US stereo release.

The very rare Dutch release has a similar rear sleeve to the regular release and the same inner sleeve. The Spanish release has a distinctive gold border, and extra printing on the right centre of the front sleeve "NO. UNO EN USA" [#1 IN USA]. The rear sleeve has the song titles in Spanish and English with pictures of six other quadraphonic releases including Nashville Skyline. Matrix numbers: QAL/P BL 33893-1A. The labels translate the album title as "Deseo" and also have the song titles in Spanish and English.

Thanks to Bill Hester for information about the Australian release and Peter Lindberg for photos. This release is in a gatefold sleeve with a laminated front sleeve and buff quadraphonic SQ labels. It is dated 1975 (the copyright year). Thanks to Hans Seegers for the information that the very rare New Zealand quadraphonic release had the same catalogue number, CBS SBPQ 234778, but had a different sleeve and labels.

Unlike in other countries, the very rare New Zealand quadraphonic release of this album has the standard stereo sleeve. The sleeve is fully laminated, with a white sticker on the front including information about quadraphonic sound; there is another sticker on the rear covering the stereo logo and catalogue number, with a new catalogue number and price code. It includes an insert, not an inner sleeve. The record labels are very different from those of the New Zealand stereo release.

There must be other international quad releases to list here! None of them were ever reissued as far as I know.

Thanks to Hans Seegers, Olav Langum, Bill Hester, Peter Lindberg, Rob van Estrik and Manuel García Jara for information and pictures.

"Desire" - stereo 8-track cartridge releases, Columbia PCA 33893 (USA/Canada)/CBS 42-86003 (UK), Jan 1976:
These rare releases have a changed playing order with Joey split over two Programs of the cartridge.

Columbia PCA 33893 (USA) - front of slipcase, scan by Manuel García Jara

R-0797 Joey (Part 1) - first of two parts of split track on Program 2 of stereo 8-track cartridge release

R-0798 Joey (Conclusion) - second of two parts of split track on Program 3 of stereo 8-track cartridge release

The playing order is: Program 1: Isis, Mozambique; Oh, Sister. Program 2: Romance In Durango; Black Diamond Bay; Joey (Part 1). Program 3: Joey (Conclusion); One More Cup Of Coffee. Program 4: Hurricane; Sara.

The US release comes in a black slipcase and has a dark grey cartridge with two paper labels. The Canadian release has an orange cartridge which comes in a black slipcase with Hans Seegers' UK copy has a black tape cartridge inside a black card slipcase. The cartridge has a single fold-over paper label. Manuel García Jara's UK copy has a white plastic cartridge with the same single fold-over paper label and no card slipcase.

"Desire" - 8-track stereo cartridge release, CBS Sugar 42-86003 (Italy), Jan 1976:

CBS 42-86003 (Italy) - front of 8-track tape cartridge, scan by Manuel García Jara
This release has a light brown cartridge with an orange paper label. It has a different playing order from the US and UK 8-track stereo cartridge releases above, and includes a rarity - an excerpt of Sara repeated on Program 4.

R-0920 Sara - excerpt on the CBS Italy 8-track stereo tape cartridge release of Desire, 1976
Thanks to Keith Venturoni for information that the excerpt of Sara is approximately the first minute.

The playing order is:

Program 1: Hurricane; Sara
Program 2: Isis; One More Cup Of Coffee; Oh, Sister
Program 3: Joey; Mozambique
Program 4: Black Diamond Bay; Romance In Durango; Sara (frammento [excerpt]).

CBS 42-86003 (Italy) - reverse of 8-track tape cartridge, scan by Manuel García Jara

Because Romance In Durango and Black Diamond Bay are inexplicably reversed, they do not segue into one another - Romance In Durango may therefore be R-0519 as on the B-side of a Japanese 7" single - see below.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

"Desire" - 8-track stereo cartridge release, CBS 42-86003 (Spain), Jan 1976:

CBS 42-86003 (Spain) - front of tape cartridge with gold safety shield, scan by Manuel García Jara

This very rare Spanish cartridge tape is one of only four Dylan 8-track cartridges released there (Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, Nashville Skyline, both by CBS, and Planet Waves by Asylum/Hispavox were the other three). This item still has the original golden safety shield across the tape opening (these cartridges were released wrapped in cellophane with this shield but not in slipcases).

CBS 42-86003 (Spain) - detail of reverse of tape cartridge, scan by Manuel García Jara

CBS 42-86003 (Spain) - reverse of tape cartridge with gold safety shield, scan by Manuel García Jara

CBS 42-86003 (Spain) - end of tape cartridge scan by Manuel García Jara

The cartridge was made for CBS Spain by an unusual company, BOCSA, and the labels were printed by Gráficas Dauco (the usual printing company for CBS tapes). It must have been released in early 1976 because the CBS address is still Calle Princesa, 1. This was when the first Spanish copies of the album came to the stores without the text "Nº 1 en USA" printed on the front (like the front of this cartridge). The album title has been translated as Deseo on the cartridge end. The song titles are in Spanish and in English. Romance In Durango is split between Program 3 and Program 4.

Tracklisting:

Program 1: Huracán [Hurricane]; Sara
Program 2: Isis; Mozambique; Oh, Hermana [Oh, Sister]
Program 3: Joey; Romance En Durango (Primera Parte) [Romance In Durango] (First Part)
Program 4: Romance En Durango (Segunda Parte) [Romance In Durango] (Second Part); Bahia Del Diamante Negro [Black Diamond Bay]; Una Taza Mas De Cafe [One More Cup Of Coffee].

Columbia 3-10298 (USA 7" promo single) - mono side scan by Hans Seegers
R-0455 Mozambique (Bob Dylan/Jacques Levy) - mono version on B-side of 7" promo single

This unique promo single had the stereo album version from Desire on the A-side, see US & International 7" Stereo Singles & EPs 1976. The side shown here will have been a mono reduction, since no mono version of the Desire album was released. For a West German stereo 7" promo single and UK and Spanish commercial releases of Mozambique with Oh Sister on the B-side, also see US & International 7" Stereo Singles & EPs 1976. As far as I'm aware there was no US commercial single release.

Evelon 71002 (Italy) - front of cassette insert, scan by Dag Braathen

This cassette release with Hurricane from Desire (edit, fades out after 3:40) on Side 2 appears to be unauthorised so it's listed in Questionable Releases, although it has the "SIAE" stamp of the Italian copyright organisation.

Steve Goodman - "The Essential... Steve Goodman" - vinyl 2LP set, Buddah BDS 5665-2 (USA/Canada/UK), 1976; Buddah BDC 68005 (USA), 1986; 8-track tape cartridge GRT/Buddah 8320-5665 H (USA), 1976; CD releases: Kama Sutra 5665 (USA), 1992; Unidisc 5665 (USA), 16 Feb 1999:
This album uses the same front and rear sleeve design and inside gatefold sleeve as the 2LP version of
City Of New Orleans below, but has a shorter different tracklist. Record 1 (10 tracks) excludes three songs of his debut album Steve Goodman, but it does include the single Election Year Rag, not present on City Of New Orleans. Record 2 (again 10 tracks) excludes one track of the original Somebody Else's Troubles (City Of New Orleans has the whole album on Record 2).

R-0093-2 Somebody's Else's Troubles (Steve Goodman) - Bob plays piano and provides harmony vocals - from the 1972 album of the same name (see 1972)

R-0111M-2 Election Year Rag (Steve Goodman) - Bob again appears as "Robert Milkwood Thomas", playing piano and providing harmony vocals (mono version)
This track was recorded at the Somebody Else's Troubles sessions, Sep 1972, and released as a 7" mono single in the USA in Oct 1972 (see 1972). It was also included as a bonus track on the 1990 Sequel UK reissue of the Somebody Else's Troubles album, and is now included as a bonus track on the remastered Buddha CD Steve Goodman, July 1999, see 1999. The 1999 remastered Buddha version of Somebody Else's Troubles doesn't include it, so is listed in
1972 with the original album.

GRT/Buddah 8320-5665 H (USA) - front of 8-track tape cartridge slipcase, scan by Manuel García Jara
The 1976 8-track cartridge release in a dark blue card slipcase has all 20 tracks on a single cartridge, five per programme. The cartridge is blue and was made for Buddah Records by the GRT (General Recorded Tape) Corporation of Sunnyvale, CA. The catalogue number is given as "8320-5665 H" on the fronts of the slipcase and tape cartridge, but the end of the tape cartridge shows it as two separate numbers: "GRT 8320" on the left and "Buddah 5665 H" on the right.

Scans of the 1986 2LP re-release required.

Buddah Records BDS 5665-2 (Canada) - front of gatefold sleeve, scan by Manuel García Jara

The Canadian release of this double album was made by Quality Records of Canada on behalf of Buddah Records and has a gatefold sleeve similar to that of the US release except for the details shown. The text "2 RECORD SET" printed at top left of the front and rear of the US set is now "DISQUES 2 RECORDS" in French and English. The inner gatefold sleeve has also the catalogue number printed at top right, missing from the inside of the US sleeves. The record labels are pink with the price "0,99$" stamped in blue on Sides 1 and 4.

CD releases: Kama Sutra 5665 (USA), 1992; Unidisc 5665 (USA), 16 Feb 1999:

Picture from amazon.com (Buddah 19 track CD release)

The two LP 20-track set including both Dylan rarities (the City Of New Orleans set below just includes R-0093) was released on CD in at least three versions, one on two CDs with 24 tracks (Kama Sutra 5665, 1992), one of a single CD with 20 tracks (Unidisc 5665, 1999) and another from Buddah on a single CD with just 19 tracks (more details required!). All of these items included the two tracks above, but none are now in print. The 1989 compilation The Original Steve Goodman is a different set, see 1989.

Although Bob appeared on Steve Goodman's 1972 album Somebody Else's Troubles (see
1972) under the pseudonym of "Robert Milkwood Thomas" (one of Dylan Thomas' best-known works is his verse play "Under Milk Wood"), on this album his presence is not just acknowledged but highlighted on the front sleeve "With Bob Dylan, Maria Muldaur & David Bromberg".

R-0093-3 Somebody's Else's Troubles (Steve Goodman) - Bob plays piano and provides harmony vocals - from the 1972 album of the same name (see 1972)

This 2LP set uses the same cover as The Essential... Steve Goodman above but has a different track selection with 23 tracks. The inside of the gatefold sleeve is identical and even has the title The Essential... Steve Goodman in the liner notes!

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for pointing out that this set is a combination rather than a compilation because the first record is actually Steve Goodman's first self-titled album from 1971 with no Dylan content but with the sides reversed so that City Of New Orleans, track 1 of Side 2 of the original album, is now track 1 of Side 1. The second record of this set is Steve Goodman's 1972 album Somebody Else's Troubles track for track. Steve Goodman only recorded these two albums for Buddah, plus the single Election Year Rag, not included here but which is on The Essential... Steve Goodman Buddah US 2LP set above.

Ronald Born's copy is the first release made by Metronome Records GmbH, Hamburg, as was the West German Election Year Rag/City Of New Orleans single, see below. The 1977-78 West German set was made for Buddha Records by TELDEC - TELEFUNKEN -DECCA Schallplatten GmbH, also Hamburg. From the 1960s until 1972 (or, possibly, 1973) the catalogue of Buddah Records was manufactured and distributed in West Germany by Deutsche Grammophon, part of Philips/PolyGram; from 1973 until 1976 by Metronome GmbH, part of the Swedish label Metronome Records; in late 1976 Philips/PolyGram bought the German branch of Metronome (the rest of the company was bought by WEA) and the catalogue of Buddah Records was again manufactured and distributed by Philips, this time through its subsidiary TELDEC (Telefunken/Decca). From its foundation in 1967, Buddah Records used a "kaleidoscope" design of labels and the icon was a silhouette of six-armed Shiva. This design was used in USA until mid 1972 in singles and until Dec 1972 in albums, when a new design was used with maroon labels and a fat Buddha (the correct spelling) as logo. However, in Europe (except in UK, where Buddah records had black labels) the new design was not used until 1977 (as the TELDEC release here).

Helidon/Buddah Records 6.28428 (Yugoslavia) - front scan by Manuel García Jara
The Yugoslav release was made for Buddha Records by Helidon Records of Ljubljana (now Slovenia). ("Helidon" means "swallow" in Classical Greek and the Helidon logo is a swallow.) The sleeve is similar to that of the 1977-78 German TELDEC release and it even has the original TELDEC "Made in Germany" information at the bottom of the rear sleeve but there is also Yugoslav copyright text printed vertically on the right hand side of the rear sleeve. The record labels have the same design as the 1977-78 German TELDEC release shown above. they come in plastic inner sleeves with the Helidon swallow logo printed on one side only.

Steve Goodman - "Idolos 12 [Idols 12]" - promo and commercial vinyl 2LP sets, Buddah Records C 7849/50 (Spain), 1979:

Buddah Records C 7849/50 (Spain) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (promo and commercial releases)
In Spain the Columbia record label was part of EMI from the 1960s until the mid 1970s, after which it was part of Polydor (formerly Philips), there was no connection with CBS Records. In the period 1977-1979 Columbia Spain, on behalf of several companies of the Polydor group (Decca, Charisma, Mercury, Buddah, etc.), released a great series called "Ídolos [Idols]", double albums that compiled first recordings (previously unreleased in Spain) of well known artists like Genesis, Small Faces, The Rolling Stones or Melanie. For this reason, the inclusion of Steve Goodman in this series was a surprise, because he was not a well known artist in Spain, and no other record by Steve Goodman was released in Spain before or after this album. Although the original title does not appear on the sleeve or on the record labels, this is the same 2LP set released in Germany and in Yugoslavia with the title City Of New Orleans, but actually consisting of Goodman's two Buddah albums. This set has a wide single sleeve. The front has a distinctive top right hand corner in red with the title and number of the series, repeated in black on the rear sleeve. The front also has the text "2 lps", printed at bottom right, not a sticker. The rear sleeve of the commercial copy has a sticker of a Spanish record shop, the tracklist in English and notes in Spanish ("Bob Dylan que hace voces y toca el piano en Somebody Else's Troubles"). The sleeve was printed by the Polydor's usual printer Gráficas FOCO. The commercial records have the usual Buddah purple label design.

The rare promotional set is more common than the commercial release! Steve Goodman was a complete unknown in Spain and Columbia made several hundred copies of this album to promote the commercial record. However it had not the expected success and only was released a limited quantity of copies of the commercial release. Both the promo and commercial records were made by COFASA (COFASA was the manufacturer of CBS albums in the period 1971-1972, but from the mid 1970s was owned by Polydor Spain).

Steve Goodman - "Election Year Rag"/"City OF New Orleans" - 7" stereo single, Buddah Records 37.004 (West Germany), 1976:
This single was manufactured in West Germany by Metronome Records, GmbH, Hamburg, on behalf of Buddah Records. The B-side is taken from the West German City Of New Orleans 2LP set, see above, the first release of which was also made by Metronome Records. The A-side was not on that set.

R-0111-2 Election Year Rag (Steve Goodman) - Bob plays piano and provides harmony vocals (stereo version), A-side of single
See 1972 for other occurrences of this performance.

Bob appeared originally as "Robert Milkwood Thomas", but is here credited openly as Bob Dylan. The B-side of this 7" single is City Of New Orleans (no Bob participation).

Larry Crum queries whether Election Year Rag on this single is really in stereo (although it says "Stereo" on both record labels), in which case this would be a further occurrence of R-0111M (the mono version).

This song has always been thought to have been recorded at the afternoon workshop on 27 Jul 1963, but sources such as Glen Dundas and Derek Barker (in Appendix 1 to his 2008 Chrome Dreams book "The Songs He Didn't Write: Bob Dylan Under The Influence") now think it took place on the following day.

R-0311-4 With God On Our Side - with Joan Baez (stereo version), from the Vanguard album Newport Broadside (Topical Songs), see 1964
This performance is now known to have been recorded during the morning workshop on 27 Jul 1963 and is not the performance from Joan's set at the evening concert on 28 Jul 1963 (R-0021), and also not the performance from the afternoon workshop on 26 Jul 1963 as originally stated here. The real R-0021 was not actually released until 2005 - for video footage of this performance see both the 2005 US Columbia/Legacy DVD No Direction Home - Bob Dylan (see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 3) and the 2007 US Columbia/Legacy DVD The Other Side Of The Mirror: Bob Dylan Live At The Newport Folk Festival 1963-1965 (see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 4). The performance released in 1997 on the Joan Baez Live At Newport CD is from 1964 (R-0253, see 1997). The performance from the Newport Broadsides (Topical Songs) album (see 1964) has been renumbered R-0311. Thanks to Larry Crum and Bob Stacy for information.

R-0122 Sign Language - Bob duets with Eric Clapton on this version of his otherwise unreleased song, recorded at Shangri-La Studios, Malibu, CA, late March, 1976
The lyrics of this song on bobdylan.com are
here. In an interview with Roger Gibbons in May 1987 published in the UK Dylan fanzine "The Telegraph", Eric claimed to have co-written this song, providing the chords while Bob provided the words. Eric is not, however, listed on the copyright record or on the song credits on this album.

The 1979 Czech Supraphon Eric Clapton LP release is in fact this album, and not a separate compilation. It is now listed here also.

"Mr. D's Collection # 2" - promo stereo 7" EP, CBS/Sony YBPB 3 (Japan), late 1976:

MrD2.jpg (24604 bytes)
CBS/Sony YBPB 3 (Japan) - front scan by Hans Seegers
This EP was given away to Japanese fans in exchange for tokens collected from seventeen CBS/Sony Dylan albums, and has four songs that originally appeared on the limited edition LP Mr. D's Collection #1. Paradoxically, it commands a higher price to collectors than the LP! It came with a folded insert.

The LP was previously listed for 1976 also. However, Hans Seegers and Wil Gielen have confirmed it is definitely from 1974, so Mr. D's Collection #1 is now listed there. This EP was not released at the same time, but two years later. As can be seen, the rear of the picture sleeve features a 1976 Rolling Thunder Revue photograph. The front picture was originally used for the 1966 Dutch release of an album called Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits but with a non-standard tracklist see International Album Releases (Dylan-only Compilations).

R-0145-2 Mixed Up Confusion - out-take from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, originally recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 1 Nov 1962 (take 10), then overdubbed with different backing, probably on 8 Dec 1964, not 1962 US Columbia 7" single mono version
See 1974 for comments about the version on Mr. D's Collection # 1, and see 1962 for details of the various circulating versions of this song. This
mono mix of the overdubbed  take also appears on the 1978 Japanese and Australian 3LP set Masterpieces (see 1978), and in a slightly shorter stereo mix on the original 1985 issue of Biograph (R-0748, see 1985). Many thanks to Les Kokay for all his information about these alternate takes, and for permission to reproduce his findings and to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for further information. The original 1962 un-dubbed version of this take (see also R-0576/R-0577/R-0578, Nov 1983) has now been released, along with six other takes of Mixed Up Confusion, on the Sony Music Europe 4CD-R set The 50th Anniversary Collection in Dec 2012.

R-0054-5 Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues- live at Liverpool, May 1966, B-side of I Want You single (see 1966)
This live version, never released on a regular Columbia album, is also on the Japanese promo LP Mr. D's Collection #1 (see 1974). the 1978 Australian 3LP set Masterpieces (see 1978), the Japanese Mr. D's Collection #3 promo CD (see 1993), the Japanese Dylan Ga Rock promo 2CD set (see 1993 and 2010) and the Capitol/EMI boxed set The Band: A Musical History (see 2005). Sadly, it does not appear on the B-side of a withdrawn CBS Spanish EP (see 1972), because the record was mispressed with It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry from Highway 61 Revisited instead! This track is now one of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, see Online Performances (Other), and is also on
the Columbia/Legacy USA/Europe 36CD set The 1966 Live Recordings, Nov 2016. All versions are still in mono as originally recorded. Fred Muller says the version on the Columbia/Legacy USA/Europe 36CD set The 1966 Live Recordings is slightly clipped at the beginning when compared with the versions on Masterpieces and The Band: A Musical History. This is confirmed by Peter Coulthard and Roger Ford, who say that the first two bars of the performance on the 1966 mono single and subsequent releases of R-0054 up to 2016 including this one were spliced in from the performance of Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues from the ABC Theatre, Belfast, Northern Ireland, 6 May 1966! This means that track 8 on CD14 of The 1966 Live Recordings is not strictly the same as R-0054, but I shall retain this R-number for this occurrence for simplicity.

R-0084-8 George Jackson - "Big Band" version, see 1971, lyrics on bobdylan.com here
R-0084 is on the Nov 1972 Japanese compilation Bob Dylan: Gift Pack '73 (see 1972), the 1978 Japanese/Australian compilation Masterpieces (see 1978), on the Japanese limited release items Mr. D's Collection #1 (LP), #2 (EP, this release) and #3 (CD) - see 1974 for #1 and 1993 for #3. It is also on the 2CD Japanese compilation Dylan Ga Rock (1993 release only, not the 2010 release). The version of R-0084 on the CD release of the 1978 Japanese/Australian set Masterpieces (see 1978) is reportedly distorted, so the CD Mr. D's Collection #3 (see 1993) is where they both are to be found in the best quality. The R-0084 "Big Band" version appeared on the Sony Music Bob Dylan Custom Mix CD web-site, Apr 2003, see Online Performances (Other). The web-site misidentified the track as R-0085.

Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?: I am now positively informed that the version of Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? in this set is in mono, and not the stereo version R-0513 unavailable on commercial CD until 2015. The version available as on Masterpieces (1978) and Biograph (1985, remastered CD reissue 1997) and the 2000/2001 Essential Bob Dylan/Ultimate Bob Dylan compilations is also from the original single and still in mono! The stereo version can only be found on a CBS stereo acetate (see 1965), the CBS Spanish 7" EP and single with Positively 4th Street (see 1972) had it in a mispressed version, not stereo as previously reported. The single version released in Nov 2015 on the 18CD Collector's Edition of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 (CD10, track 12) is in stereo and has been remixed from the original tapes. R-0513 will still remain a rarity, because of the limited availability of this massive set.

Thanks to Wil Gielen for information that all the qualifying obis are dated "52-12-31" (This is 31 Dec 1977 as 1977 was Showa Era Year 52 in the Japanese calendar). This date was in fact the closure date for the offer, so Wil believes the EP was released much earlier, perhaps as early as 1976.

Columbia 3-10454 (USA) - still sealed copy in display packaging, scan by Gerard Germano

Hans Seegers has two copies of the first US commercial single, the A-sides are the same, but one of them (illustrated) has "DEMONSTRATION - NOT FOR SALE" stamped on one line on the B-side. Gerard Germano's sealed copy comes in with a blue/white display card with Rita May as the A-side and the B-side wrongly shown as "Stuck Inside Of Memphis With A Memphis Blues Again". The record label design is the first commercial variant (see below). The rear of the display card is blank. Manuel García Jara has a second copy, bought at Peach Records, New York City, in 1976. This copy has a display card which is identical on both sides. The record is displayed the same was as Gerard's, with Rita May visible, and the label variant is the same.

R-0128 Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again: A-side - 3:35 edit of live version from the Hard Rain album: "This starts with a pretty rough cut, then gives us the two first verses ("Ragman" and "Shakespeare"), omits the "Mona" verse, continues with the "Grandpa" verse, a shortened guitar solo, the "Ruthie" verse, and the album version ending with applause faded out."
It's reported that Bob himself supervised this edit!

R-0130 Rita May (Bob Dylan/Jacques Levy) : B-side - Desire out-take, recorded Jul 1975, lyrics on bobdylan.com here
The 1977 UK CBS single had R-0130 as the A-side on the record (but not on the sleeve) and a 1976 French CBS single was issued with the sides reversed, see below.

R-0130 is also on the 1978 Japanese/Australian compilation Masterpieces, (see 1978) and on two limited edition Japanese CD releases, Mr. D's Collection #3 and Dylan Ga Rock (for both, see 1993). R-0130 appeared on the Sony Music Bob Dylan Custom Mix CD web-site, Apr 2003, see Online Performances (Other). It was also one of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, also see Online Performances (Other). It is now also released on the 2010 version of Dylan Ga Rock (see 2010)

Four label variations of the US promo single are shown:

  1. White labels with "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" and publisher's credits printed on the right above and below the catalogue number, and "Produced by Don DeVito" on first line under "Taken from the Columbia Lp: "HARD RAIN" PC 34349" and "and Bob Dylan" on the second line.

  2. White labels with "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" and publisher's credits printed on the right above and below the catalogue number, and "Produced by Don DeVito and" on the first line and just "Bob Dylan" on the second line.

  3. White labels without "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" and publisher's credits on the right above and below the catalogue number, but rubber-stamped "DEMONSTRATION NOT FOR SALE" on two lines on both sides, also with "Produced by Don DeVito" on first line under "Taken from the Columbia Lp: "HARD RAIN" PC 34349" and "and Bob Dylan" on the second line (as variant 1).

  4. Commercial labels (first variant as below) rubber-stamped with "DEMONSTRATION - NOT FOR SALE" on one line on the B-side only (A-side same as the first commercial single)

Two label variations of the US commercial single are shown:

  1. Regular labels without publisher's credits printed on the right below the catalogue number, and "Produced by Don DeVito" on first line under "Taken from the Columbia Lp: "HARD RAIN" PC 34349" and "and Bob Dylan" on the second line (layout as the third promo variant).

  2. Regular labels without publisher's credits printed on the right below the catalogue number, and "Produced by Don DeVito and" on the first line under the song title and composer credits and just "Bob Dylan" on the second line (a fourth label variant).

Thanks to Hans Seegers for detailed information and scans.

R-0130-2 Rita May (Bob Dylan/Jacques Levy) : B-side of all singles - Desire out-take, recorded Jul 1975, lyrics on bobdylan.com here
The 1977 UK CBS single had R-0130 as the A-side on the record (but not on the sleeve) while a 1976 French version of CBS 4859 was issued with the sides reversed, see below.

R-0130 is also on the 1978 Japanese/Australian compilation Masterpieces, (see 1978) and on three limited edition Japanese CD releases, Mr. D's Collection #3, (see 1993) and Dylan Ga Rock (see 1993 and 2010).

A cover of Rita May by Jerry Lee Lewis can be found on the 1989 UK 2LP 32-track compilation The Songs Of Bob Dylan (Start Records STDL 20). In addition, this set contains four still unreleased Dylan songs, but all four of them are only on the vinyl and cassette releases, not the CD release (which was trimmed down to a single CD)!

Thanks to Hans Seegers and Yan Friis for information and scans. Thanks to Giuseppe Gazerro for the information that a promo copy of this single with Rita May was given away on the front of an issue of the Italian magazine "Music" - this was one of the sleeve variants of the standard single with a label from the magazine.

"Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again"/"Rita May" - 7" singles, Suzy Records/CBS 4859 (Yugoslavia), Nov 1976:

Suzy Records/CBS 4859 (Yugoslavia) - A-side scan by Hans Seegers (second variant)

This single was manufactured in Yugoslavia by Jugoton of Zagreb (now Croatia) and distributed for CBS by Suzy Records, also of Zagreb. It has two rear sleeves and two A-side label variants. The first rear sleeve is a generic Suzy design with nine non-Dylan single sleeves, the second has the same design as the West German and Dutch sleeves above with the Suzy logo at top right. The first A-side variant has "STEREO" on the left of the centre hole, while the B-side and the second A-side variant have "STEREO" on the right. There doesn't seem to be a B-side label with the same design as the first A-side.

Thanks to Francisco Lima for information and to Hans Seegers for further information and scans.
