Dylan (1973)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

Final front sleeve (no artist name)

Original US stereo LP, Asylum 7E 1003, 17 Jan 1974, reissued as Columbia PC 37637, 1982. This album was originally called Ceremonies Of The Horsemen and had completely different artwork (taken from "Looking Up Dylan's Sleeves (Part 3)" by Rod MacBeath in "The Telegraph", issue 52, photos by Arie de Reus). Both the original and the final front sleeve paintings are by Bob. The withdrawn rear photo of Bob in a beret is uncredited. The running order of the songs was slightly different as per the pink labelled acetate below. It's also reported another prospective title for the album was Love Songs, although no artwork for that title has surfaced. The lettering on the rear sleeve including the "obscene" poem and the misspelling of Richard Manuel's name as "Manual" is by Bob.

The US Asylum Quadraphonic release of this album has a slightly longer second version of Forever Young (R-0115, see 1974).

The album topped the Billboard album charts in the USA on the basis of advance orders, the first of Bob's album to do so.

This title is one of the fifteen Dylan albums released in Sep 2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD. This is playable both in stereo on an ordinary CD player and in enhanced stereo on an SA-CD player or a DVD player that also plays SA-CDs (Sony's higher range models all do this). Some titles are available in 5.1 surround sound, but not this one, despite the fact it was released in a quadraphonic mix.

One out-take from this album has been officially released:

The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 (1991): Nobody 'Cept You

Vinyl and Tape Releases (1974)

Vinyl and tape releases were originally on Asylum in the USA, with worldwide releases sometimes on other labels such as Island or Elektra. In 1982 rights to release the album were purchased by Sony, so releases after that date are on Columbia, CBS or CBS/Sony (see the separate section below).

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Ashes 'N Sand" - early 12" acetate of "Planet Waves", Kendun Recorders, Burbank, CA, on behalf of Asylum Records (USA), 12 Dec 1973:

Side 1 scan by Keith Venturoni (note track order)
Apart from the title ("Ashes & Sand" was the name of Bob's production company set up in the Sixties), the only difference between this acetate and the released album is that the first two songs on Side 1 are switched. Going, Going, Gone is the first track, followed by On A Night Like This.

Thanks to Keith Venturoni for information and scans.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - white label 12" test pressing, Asylum 7E-1003 (USA), Dec 1973:

Typed information sheet taped to record sleeve - scan by Arie de Reus

This test pressing from eBay has blue/green generic labels from Columbia's pressing plant at Pitman, NJ. There is no text on the record labels except "Side 1" and "Side 2" in blue marker pen.

Side 1 scan by Arie de Reus

Side 2 scan by Arie de Reus

Detail of Side 2 with matrix number - photo from eBay

The record is in a plain white paper sleeve with a US letter sized sheet taped to it. The typed text says the disc is a label copy for Asylum Records, and includes the artist name, album title, track listings and track timings. The matrix numbers have the catalogue number handwritten and "KENDUN" stamped on both sides. (The album was mastered at Kendun Recorders, Burbank, CA, see above.) Gerd Rundel has a similar pair of test pressings for Before The Flood, also mastered by Columbia at Pitman, NJ.

Thanks to Renaud Depierreux for finding this on eBay and to Arie de Reus for scans.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - white label 12" promo LP releases, Asylum 7E-1003 (USA), Dec 1973:

Asylum 7E 1003 (USA) - front with stickers, scan by Hans Seegers (promo copy 1)

These albums are promo copies of the commercially released album with the regular sleeve but with white Asylum labels.

The first example labels have the catalogue number on the right as the first commercial variant below with the "TOUCH MAMA" misprint. "NOT FOR SALE" is printed to the left of the centre hole below the side number and the catalogue number is printed to the right of the centre hole below "STEREO". The "BOB DYLAN" sticker as below is centre top over the album title and there is also a promo sticker on the front sleeve. The rear sleeve is the same as the commercial copy below.

Asylum 7E 1003 (USA) - Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (promo copy 4)

Gerd Rundel has a second promo copy with a different Elektra front sticker and white Asylum record labels. "TOUGH MAMA" is correctly spelled, but to the right of the centre hole the catalogue number is above "STEREO". The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E-1003 A-7 CP, Side 2 - 7E-1003 B-6 CP plus “KENDUN” stamped on both sides. The "CP" code means this copy was pressed at the Columbia pressing plant, Pitman, NJ. Phill Townsend's copy is as the first variant with the "TOUCH MAMA" misprint and with the same front sleeve stickers. This copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 1  7E-1003 A-Z  csm  KENDUN, Side 2 - 7E-1003-B  1  7E-501B-3  csm  KENDUN. The underlined portion of text on Side 2 is scribbled out (though the "B-3" part seems to have been deliberately left visible). It looks as if the correct matrix number was than added to the front (i.e. in front of the leading "1"). The matrix number text is in three distinct blocks - the "1" is distanced from the catalogue number, the "csm" looks to be a different hand, and "KENDUN" is stamped. The "csm" code means this copy was pressed at Columbia Records, Santa Maria, CA.

Gerd Rundel has a third promo copy with two stickers on the front sleeve, one with "BOB DYLAN" and a promo sticker slightly different from the one on Hans Seegers' promo copy and Gerd's fourth promo copy, because it is smaller with rounded corners and the colouring is a darker grey. This copy still has its outer sleeve with gold rear. The record has a third variant of white Asylum record labels - "TOUGH MAMA" is again correctly spelled, like promo copy 2 "NOT FOR SALE" is again printed to the left of the centre hole below "SIDE ONE" and the catalogue number is again printed to the right of the centre hole above "STEREO", but the type face and text positioning are different. The record of Gerd Rundel's third copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E-1003 A9 CTH, Side 2 - 7E-1003 B9 CTH plus “KENDUN” stamped on both sides. The "CTH" code means this copy was pressed at Columbia Records, Terre Haute, IN.

Asylum 7E 1003 (USA) - front with stickers, scan by Gerd Rundel (alternate promo copy 4 with new sticker at top right)
Thanks to Renaud Depierreux and Gerd Rundel for finding a promo copy on eBay with a fourth variant of white Asylum record labels - "TOUGH MAMA" is again correctly spelled, this time the catalogue number is printed to the left of the centre hole under the side number, and "PROMOTIONAL COPY NOT FOR SALE" is printed to the right of the centre hole below "STEREO". The record of Gerd Rundel's fourth copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E-1003 A1, Side 2 -7E-1003-B1 plus “KENDUN” stamped on both sides. Gerd has a second copy of this fourth promo variant with a yellow sticker at front top right.

Thanks to Hans Seegers and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo vinyl LP releases, Asylum 7E 1003 (USA), 17 Jan 1974:
The album is sub-titled Moonglow: Cast-Iron Songs & Torch Ballads. For an early acetate and a promo release of this album from Dec 1973, see above.

PWUSAFront.jpg (29089 bytes)
Asylum 7E 1003 (USA) - front with sticker, scan by David Burgess
The first US copy illustrated is still in the shrink-wrap, and has a sticker on the front sleeve with "BOB DYLAN" so that buyers would not be confused! The artwork front and back and the sleeve notes are by Bob. The sleeve notes by Bob were judged to be too "obscene" for public display, and the album sleeve was covered by a paper outer sleeve that had the rest of the front and back designs and text but hid the notes. The rear paper sleeve was gold with white text, the album rear itself was white with black text and a gold border. Richard Manuel's name is misspelled "Manual"!

Information from Tim Dunn: "I have a US vinyl copy of Planet Waves (Asylum 7E-1003) with the title variation "TOUCH MAMA" on the label. The matrix etching is "7E-1003-A-4" (my other opened Asylum copy has "7E-1003 A1" in the matrix)." A scan of the misprinted label from Hans Seegers is shown below. Note that label variants 1, 2 and 4 the catalogue number "7E-1003-A" is on the right, on label variant 3 it's on the left.

Asylum 7E 1003 (USA) - Side 2 scan by Matt Dornan (fourth variant)

The variants of 7E-1003 that have been reported to me are as follows:

  1. Promo with white Asylum labels with "(P) 1974 Asylum Records" on one line and catalogue number on right, matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E-1003 A-Z  CSM (written), Side 2 - 7E-1003-B  I  B-3 CSM  B3 (written), 7E-501(scratched), both sides - KENDUN (printed). Front sleeve: black on transparent sticker with "BOB DYLAN" plus white on brown sticker with "NOT FOR SALE" (as promo copy above). Michael Palinkas has a copy with these labels with matrix numbers: Side 1 - "T1 7E-1003 A-9-CTH" "KENDUN", Side 2 -  "T1 7E-501 (scratched) B-8 CTH" "KENDUN". As above, the "CTH" code means this was pressed at Columbia Records, Terre Haute, IN.

  2. Nate Nash has a copy of the commercial release with the same matrix numbers as Michael Palinkas' copy, with standard Asylum labels with "(P) 1974 Asylum Records" on one line and the catalogue number on right below "STEREO" (illustrated with the misprint).

  3. Jeremy Mayle has a copy of the commercial release, the labels of which have the catalogue number to the right of the centre hole, right aligned above "STEREO"; "(P) 1974 Asylum Records" on one line, and no misprint (shown above).  Manuel García Jara has a variant of this where the catalogue number to the right of the centre hole is also above "STEREO", but this time centred instead of right aligned.

  4. Commercial release with standard Asylum labels with "(P) 1974 Asylum Records" on 2 lines, catalogue number on right and “TOUCH” instead of “TOUGH”. Matrix numbers: Side 1 - 1  7E-1003 A3 CSM (written), Side 2 -  7E-1003-B 1 B-3 CSM (written), 7E-501 (scratched), both sides: KENDUN (printed), rear sleeve: golden insert as shown above. Renaud Depierreux also has a commercial copy with the "TOUCH MAMA" misprint, the crinkled texture sleeve as the Australian copy described below and matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E – 1003 AZ CSM (written) KENDUN  (printed), Side 2 - 7E – 1003-B 1 (written) 7E-501 (scratched) B2 CSM (written) KENDUN (printed). The "CSM" code means this was pressed at Columbia Records, Santa Maria, CA.

  5. Commercial release with cut out Asylum labels with catalogue number on left. Matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E-1003A/7E-1003B-1 SP 01 (written), Side 2 - 7E-501 B SP (scratched), both sides -KENDUN (printed). Front sleeve: black on transparent sticker with "BOB DYLAN", rear sleeve: golden insert. Peter Lindberg's copy has the following matrix numbers: "Side 1 - 7E-1003A (written) KENDUN (stamped) catalogue number on left of label (with Tough); Side 2 - 7E-1003-B1 (written) 0-2 (faintly written) tiny T with a v under it then even smaller C then A 3 EX-SP also very small (written) 7E-501 B-1 (scratched out) then SP (written) KENDUN (stamped) catalogue number on the left of label." According to Magnus Peterson Olsson the sleeve has the same crinkled texture as the Australian copy described below. The "SP" code means this was pressed at Specialty Record Corp, Olyphant, PA.

  6. Commercial release with cut out Asylum labels with catalogue number on right below "STEREO". Matrix number: Side 1- 7E-1003 A.3 CSM B 4 (handwritten), Side 2 - 7E-1003 B  1  B-3 CSM   A 2 (handwritten) 7E-501 (scratched), both sides - KENDUN (stamped). The rear sleeve comes with a white on golden insert over the black/white rear sleeve with almost the same text.

  7. Commercial release with Asylum labels, "7E-1003-A/B" on right above "STEREO". Matrix numbers: Side 1- 7E-1003 A.7 CP (written), Side 2 - 7E-1003-B-7 CP (written), 7E-501 (scratched out) 1003 B-7 CP, both sides - KENDUN (stamped). Renaud Depierreux also has a commercial copy with matrix numbers: Side 1 as before, Side 2 - 7E-501 B-7 CP (lightly scratched – barely noticeable) "KENDUN". This copy has no front "BOB DYLAN" sticker, the right hand top corner cut off on both the sleeve and the insert, while the sleeve has a much more marked crinkled texture than other copies.

  8. Demo copy of later commercial release with bottom right corner of sleeve missing and Asylum labels "Tough Mama" correct, "7E-1003-A/B" on right below "STEREO". Handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 -  7E-1003 A-8 CTH, Side 2 - 7E-501 (crossed out) 1003 (above) B-8 CTH, also KENDUN stamped on both sides. As above, the "CTH" code means this was pressed at Columbia Records, Terre Haute, IN.

Asylum ET-81003 (USA) - front of slipcase, scan by Hans Seegers

Like many 8-track releases, the original album running order is changed to split the material into four approximately equal parts, with the US and Canadian releases being different! The US release has a dark blue/purple cartridge in a light blue/dark blue slipcase with two separate labels. Hans Seegers' copy shown is still sealed. The Canadian release has a yellow cartridge in an orange slipcase with a wraparound label.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - Quadraphonic LP, Asylum EQ-1003 (USA), 1974:

Asylum EQ-1003 (USA) - front scan by Hans Seegers

This Quadraphonic release contains rarities, so is also listed in 1974. Thanks to Fred Muller for pointing out that the misspelling of Richard Manuel's name as "Manual" on the rear sleeve has been corrected! The front sleeve has a smaller "MOONGLOW" drawing with black edges, the rear sleeve is black on white. This LP was encoded using the Quadradisc system, different from the Sony SQ quadraphonic system used by Columbia, as shown above. The inner sleeve is printed with an illustrated article by Ivan Berger describing the Quadradisc system. The labels are similar to the standard US Asylum vinyl release but with the Quadradisc logo. Although the catalogue number on the album sleeve is "EQ-1003", on the record labels of Hans Seegers' copy it's "QD-1003". The record has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1- EQ-1003 A J L, Side 1- EQ-1003 B J L. Simon Blokker's copy comes in the same sleeve, although it has a slot clipped out indicating it was used as a promo. The record labels this time have "EQ-1003" as the catalogue number, and this copy has the same matrix numbers as Hans' copy.

This Quadraphonic release contains rarities, so is also listed in 1974.

The copy shown is still sealed. It has an orange cartridge with two yellow labels with black text, and comes in an orange slipcase. Unlike stereo 8-track releases, which have four programs, there are only two programs, both the same as the LP running order.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo vinyl LP, Island ILPS 9261 (UK), 17 Jan 1974:

PWIslandUKFront.JPG (29397 bytes)
Island ILPS 9261 (UK) - front (both copies)
This album was released by Island Records in the UK, licensed from Asylum. In the UK, as in the USA, the sleeve notes were judged to be "obscene", and the album was also sold with a paper outer sleeve. Sadly, I tore off the paper sleeve to see what the fuss was about, and thus reduced the value of my copy by an enormous amount! With hindsight, I should have bought two copies - one to keep intact, and one to play...

The rear of Sergio Mariano Romay's Ram's Horn Music UK music book also has the "banned" sleeve notes!

The sleeve of my copy was printed in Holland by Euro-Albums Holland BV. Thanks to Patrick Helfrich for the scan of the paper outer sleeve that I threw away! It has a flap to tuck into the sleeve opening, with the text "PRINTED BY EURO-ALBUMS HOLLAND BV" on the flap. Manuel García Jara's copy has a different sleeve from mine that was printed in England by Robor Limited. The paper outer sleeve was also presumably printed in England as it does not have the Dutch text on the flap. It is also missing the gold border. My record has a plain white sleeve and white Island "Caribbean island" labels with matrix numbers: Side 1 - ILPS 9261 A-1U (stamped), 7E 1003-A-1 (handwritten), ESR-TC-1-9-74 (handwritten), Side 2 - ILPS 9261 B-1U (stamped), 7E 1003-B-1 (handwritten). ("7E 1003" was the US Asylum catalogue number, "1-9-74" was the pressing date (9 Jan 1974).

The record of Manuel's copy is the same as mine, with identical record labels and matrix numbers: Side 1 - ILPS 9261 A-1U (stamped), 7E 1003-A-1 (written), ESR-TC-1-9-74 (written), Side 2 - ILPS 9261 B-1U (stamped), 7E 1003-B-1 (written).

Also above is an advertisement for the Island release of Planet Waves from the Jan 1974 issue of the UK magazine "Let It Rock", provided by David Burgess.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo 8-track tape cartridge, Island Y81 9261 (UK), Jan 1974:

Island Y81 9261 (UK) - front of slipcase, scan by Hans Seegers
Hans Seeger's copy has a pink cartridge and is still sealed in a slipcase. The reverse of the slipcase just has the Island logo. The running order is:

Program A: On a Night Like This; Going, Going, Gone; Tough Mama.

Program B: Hazel; Something There Is About You, Forever Young.

Program C: Forever Young; Dirge.

Program D: You Angel, You; Never Say Goodbye; Wedding Song.

This is different from both the USA and Canada!

Island ILPS 9261 (Ireland) - front scan by Manuel García Jara
Unlike several CBS Ireland pressings, this is a first release rather than a re-release. This rare Irish release had a UK sleeve (the version printed in England by Robor Limited), but the record was pressed in Ireland. It has the same Island “Caribbean island” labels as the UK release, but has “Made in the Republic of Ireland” to the right of the centre hole. The rear sleeve of the copy shown has a label from a record store in Killarney, Ireland. For On A Night Like This/Forever Young, an Irish stereo 7" single from this album, see International 7" Singles & EPs 1974.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - vinyl test pressing, promo and commercial albums, Asylum AS 53 003 (West Germany/NL), Jan 1974:

Asylum AS 53 003 (West Germany/NL) - front with sticker, scan by Rene Kejlskov Jørgensen
The West German promo album has a standard sleeve but the record has white promo labels. The front sleeve has a white sticker with "BOB DYLAN in white in a red rectangle with rounded ends. The West German commercial record has labels with the blue/white clouds design. Rene Kejlskov Jørgensen's commercial record has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - WEA59401-A, Side 2 - WEA59401-B. The rear sleeve of this copy has a black rectangle printed at bottom right.

The West German test pressing has the same sleeve as the regular release but has plain white labels with just the matrix numbers (same as the regular release also) handwritten.

The Dutch test pressing shown has a stock label on Side 1 without added text, the Side 2 label is blank. The record for the Dutch commercial release owned by Arie de Reus was made in Holland but came in the West German commercial sleeve. This record has plain labels with the Asylum blue sky/clouds design in a circle only, so must be a second release.

Asylum AS 53 003 (NL) - commercial Side 2 scan by Arie de Reus (second release)

Simon Blokker has a commercial copy with a sleeve made in Germany with the red/white front sticker differently positioned. not only is there no black rectangle printed on the rear sleeve, there is no text in the place where Rene's copy has a rectangle as shown above. I can only assume that some text was mistakenly added and then overprinted. The record of Simon's copy has regular Asylum blue sky/clouds labels, so must be a first commercial release. There is no country of origin, unlike on Arie's labels, but the labels have the Dutch copyright organisation "STEMRA" logo, so the record was either made in Holland or made in Germany for the Dutch market. This record has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E-1003 A'' HM 21 531-1-4-8, Side 2 - 7E-1003 B'' HM 21 532-1-4-8.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo 8-track tape cartridge releases, Asylum AS 853003 (West Germany)/Asylum K 853003 (Italy), Jan 1974:

Like many 8-tracks, the original album running order is changed to split the material into four approximately equal parts, with the West German and Italian releases being different from each other, and also from the US, Canadian and UK releases above! Unlike the US Columbia 8-tracks, these cartridges (white for Germany, orange for Italy), have a single label which folds over the front and back. These cartridges do not come in a slipcase like the US/UK releases, but just have a removable plastic clip over the exposed tape end. The German running order is:

Program 1: On A Night Like This; Forever Young (Part 1); Wedding Song
Program 2: Going, Going, Gone; Tough Mama; Hazel
Program 3: Something There Is About You; You Angel, You; Never Say Goodbye
Program 4: Forever Young (Part 2); Dirge

The Italian running order is:

Program 1: On A Night Like This; Going, Going, Gone; Tough Mama
Program 2: Forever Young; Dirge
Program 3: Hazel, Something There Is About You; Forever Young
Program 4: You Angel, You; Never Say Goodbye; Wedding Song

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - test pressing and commercial stereo vinyl LP releases, Asylum AS 53.003 (France), 1974; re-released 1978:

Asylum AS 53.003 (France) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (all releases)

This French release is notable for having "BOB DYLAN" printed on the front sleeve in the same type face and size as the album title, which is shifted to the right (this design was also used for the very rare Lebanese release, see below). The sleeve was printed in France by Graphicolor. The record labels are the blue/white clouds Asylum design. The labels of the 1974 release do not say the record was made in France, but have the French "SACEM" copyright organisation logo and also "33 TOURS" (RPM) as the playing speed. Tough Mama on Side 1 is printed correctly.

Asylum AS 53.003 (France) - Side 2 scan by Manuel García Jara (1978 release)

The record of Gerd Rundel's copy of the French test pressing comes in the same sleeve as the commercial copy. The record has white "échantillon" generic labels with handwritten information including the catalogue number, "DYLAN" in different handwriting, and a date of "16.1.74" (16 Jan 1974) on Side 1. The Side 2 label just has "B". This copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 53003 A1, Side 2 - 53003 B (could be "1B").

The 1978 release comes in a sleeve that is identical to that of the 1974 edition but the record labels are very different. The "SACEM" logo is now to the right of the centre hole instead of the left, and "SIDE ONE"/"SIDE TWO" are now "FACE A"/"FACE B". The copyright text now includes "made in France", not present on the previous release's labels. Tough Mama on Side 1 is now shown incorrectly as "TOUCH MAMA". The record of this copy has matrix numbers: Side 1 - MPO (stamped) 53003 A1 (handwritten), Side 2 - MPO (stamped) 53003 B (handwritten). "MPO" is MPO International, Averton, France - "Moularges et Plastiques de l'Ouest [Western Mouldings & Plastics]".

This Greek release of Asylum 7E 1003 has the US catalogue number. It has "BOB DYLAN" printed on the front sleeve diagonally at top left. This album comes in a thin sleeve without spine text and was distributed by Lyra Records & Tapes of Athens on behalf of Asylum. It has "0441" at top right of the front sleeve and the rear sleeve and also "441" on the labels to the right of the centre hole, this may be a Lyra catalogue number. The rear sleeve was uncensored.

The first variant record was made in Greece by CGCG Ltd. and has Asylum "clouds" labels with stamped matrix numbers Side 1 - 7E 1003 A, Side 2 - 7E 1003 B. The second variant record was also made in Greece by CGCG Ltd. and again has Asylum "clouds" labels with the same stamped matrix numbers Side 1 - 7E 1003 A, Side 2 - 7E 1003 B, but two lines of much longer Greek copyright text round the circumference. The placement of "441" on the labels to the right of the centre hole is different from that of the first variant, which implies it was stamped on the labels later.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and to Christos Billis and Gerd Rundel assisted by Gert Hintennach and Joachim Beck for further information and scans.

Asylum/Suzy Records WEA 53003 (Yugoslavia) - front scan by Manuel García Jara
Like the CBS Yugoslav releases this album was made in Yugoslavia by Suzy Records of Zagreb (now Croatia) for Asylum Records. The sleeve has a "BOB DYLAN" sticker. The record labels are the blue/white clouds Asylum design. The labels have the logo of the "SAKOJ" Yugoslav copyright organisation. The artists' organisation "SAKOJ" (Union of Composers of Yugoslavia) became "SOKOJ" (Federation of Organisations of Composers of Yugoslavia) in 1976, which appears on the labels of Dylan releases after that date. The matrix numbers of the copy shown are: Side 1 - WEA 59401-A PF, Side 2 - WEA 59401-B PF. Suzy Records also released Before The Flood in Yugoslavia, although in very limited quantities.

Warner Bros/Melodi
Plâk 7E-1003 (Turkey) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (1974 and 1975 releases)
These albums were made in Turkey by Melodi Plâk for Warner Bros. Both 1974 and 1975 releases have the same sleeve. The front sleeve has "BOB DYLAN" printed, not a sticker. The album was released under licence from Warner Bros Records of West Germany, which is why it has the logo of the German copyright organisation "GEMA" on the record labels. Although there are no promo markings, only 300 of the 1974 albums were pressed and it was not sold commercially, just distributed in late 1974 to a few radio stations and magazines. The second version was released commercially in Turkey in 1975.

The records have a generic Melodi inner sleeve and Warner Bros palm tree picture labels. Both copies shown have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - WEA 59401-A PF, Side 2 - WEA 59401-B PF. On the Side 1 label Tough Mama is misspelled "Tough Fama" and Something There Is About You is misprinted as "Some Thing There Is About You". The promo copy has very noticeably darker colour labels than the commercial release, making the text less visible. All text except the tracklist is in different positions from the commercial copy.

For a Turkish Melodi Plâk 7" single of On A Night Like This/You Angel You from Planet Waves, see International 7" Singles & EPs 1974.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel and Stuart Moore for information and to Manuel García Jara for further information and scans.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo vinyl LP, Asylum/SLD 53.1003 (Lebanon), 1974:

Asylum/SLD 53.1003 (Lebanon) - front scan by Arie de Reus
This very rare album was made in Lebanon for Asylum Records by SLD (Société Libanaise du Disque S.A.L.). This release is notable for having "BOB DYLAN" on the front sleeve in the same type face and size as the album title, which is shifted to the right (this design was also used for the French release, see above). The sleeve of the copy shown has suffered water damage. It has the "obscene" sleeve notes on the rear.

Asylum/SLD 53.1003 (Lebanon) - Side 2 scan by Arie de Reus

The record has blue Asylum record labels with catalogue number "7E-1003" (the US catalogue number) and the logo of the French "SACEM" copyright organisation. There are two record label mistakes: Side 1 has wrongly “TOUCH MAMA” instead of “TOUGH MAMA” (as the misprinted US and French copies above); Side 2 has wrongly “YOU ANGEL” instead of “YOU ANGEL YOU”.

Thanks to Arie de Reus and Gerd Rundel for information and scans.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - promo and commercial stereo vinyl LP releases, Asylum P-8420Y (Japan), 1974:

Asylum P-8420Y (Japan) - front with obi, scan by Gerd Rundel and Thommy Mikkat (promo release)

This is the original Asylum Japanese release. It has a fold-out lyrics insert in English and Japanese and a blue/white obi with price ¥2,300. The promo copy shown has white Asylum labels and a "Sample" sticker in English and Japanese on the front sleeve. The stamped matrix numbers are: Side 1 - P-8420Y-1, Side 2 - P-8420Y-2. The commercial copy has the regular blue sky/clouds Asylum Records labels.

Michael Miller has a test pressing with the regular sleeve and lyrics insert, but without an obi. The front sleeve does not have the "Sample" sticker. The record has plain white labels with just a stamped `catalogue number and Japanese characters at the top which mean "Rough Test Pressing".

PlanetWavesAusObiFront.jpg (16498 bytes)
Asylum 7E-1003 (Australia) - front with band, scan by Rob Cole (first variant)
The 1974 Asylum album had the regular cover with no "BOB DYLAN" and Rob Cole's copy has a red and white paper band with white text "BOB DYLAN - LATEST ALBUM". The "obscene" sleeve notes were not hidden. The card sleeve has an unusual crinkled texture, see scans below.

Stuart Moore's copy, which he thinks is later, has a smooth textured sleeve. The labels are also slightly different: on the first variant the text below the side number to the left of the centre hole says "33⅓ R.P.M.", on the second it is "33⅓ RPM". Also on the first variant the copyright credit is "(Albert)", on the second it is "J. Albert".

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo vinyl LP, Asylum 7E-1003 (India), 1974:

Asylum 7E-1003 (India) - front with sticker, scan by Arie de Reus
Like earlier CBS releases, this rare release with the US catalogue number was made in India by the Gramophone Company of India, a subsidiary of EMI  (bought by Universal in 2012), for Asylum Records. It has "BOB DYLAN" printed on the front at top left and the "obscene" sleeve notes on the rear were not hidden. There is a yellow Indian record shop sticker on the front. The record has Asylum labels with the blue sky/clouds design.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Ondas Planetarias [Planet Waves]" - stereo vinyl LP, Gamma/Asylum GX01-672 (Mexico), 1974:

Gamma/Asylum GX01-672 (Mexico) - front scan by Manuel García Jara
This Mexican album was made by Gamma S.A. for Asylum Records (Gamma is a Mexican label, well known to Dylan covers collectors). Like the first Mexican mono pressing of Nashville Skyline with the English album title on the front and the Spanish translation on the labels only (Horizontes de Nashville), and like Street-Legal with the original title on cover and Legal Para Circular on the record labels, this album has Planet Waves on the sleeve but Ondas Planetarias only on the labels (this is the same translation as on the Uruguayan album below).

The sleeve is fully laminated; the front has the Asylum logo; the rear has the uncensored sleeve notes and the Gamma logo. The record labels have an unique black and grey colour with song titles in Spanish and English. The translations into Spanish are correct except "Going, Going, Gone" - "Se Va, Se Va, Se Fue" = "He's Going, He's Going, He's Gone"; as the lyrics are "I´m Going, I'm Going, I'm Gone", the correct translation is "Me Voy, Me Voy, Me Fui". This mistake is repeated on the CBS Mexican release of Bob Dylan At Budokan!

The matrix numbers of the copy shown are: Side 1 - GX 01 672 A U, Side 2 - GX 01 672 B U.

Asylum ASYLP-50.002 (Brazil) - front scan by Arie de Reus
The front sleeve of this release has "BOB DYLAN", "7E-1003" and "STEREO" printed in addition to the normal front design. The rear sleeve has the "obscene" sleeve notes. The record has blue/white cloud design Asylum labels and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E 1003 A, Side 2 - 7E 1003 B (the US catalogue number). Planet Waves was re-released in Brazil in 1982 on the Harmony label (a subsidiary of CBS), see below.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - promo and commercial stereo vinyl LP releases, Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina), Jul 1974:

Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina), Jul 1974 - promo release (textured sleeve):

Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina) - front scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (promo release)

This promotional copy with white "MH" labels belonged to LU8 Radio Bariloche (an Argentinean radio station in the city of the same name situated in the south of Argentina, called “the Argentinean Switzerland”). It was made by Argentinean company Discos Music-Hall on behalf of Elektra Records. It has the same crinkled texture sleeve used for the first commercial release of Planet Waves in Argentina. The name of the radio station has been stamped with a rubber stamp (twice) on the front sleeve. On the rear sleeve, the stamp of the radio station is repeated and there is also at the bottom a large rubber stamp with the legend “Disco de Demostración – Prohibida su Venta [Demonstration Record – Sale Forbidden]”. (The rubber stamp used is the same as seen on the rear of the Argentinean promotional release of Before The Flood (Music-Hall/Elektra MH-14269/70, Argentina, 1977). The Planet Waves inner sleeve is the same as the commercial release below. The songs chosen to promote this record are marked with a pen on the rear.

Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina) - rear scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (promo release)

Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina) - Side 1 scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (promo release)

Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina) - detail of Side 1, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (promo release)

Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina) - Side 2 scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (promo release)

Like the Argentinean Before The Flood promo release, this album has white MH labels. These labels have two promotional legends (both sides), one of them printed in red ink. They also have stamped (both sides) the name of the radio station and, on Side 1 only, an internal number and the date "24-7-74" (24 Jul 1974) is handwritten on a small label stuck to the left of the centre hole. The circumference text is the same as that of the first commercial release labels below, including the text "Industria Argentina – Fabricao y Distribuido por SICAMERICANA S.A.C.I.F.I. [Argentinian Industry – Manufactured and Distributed by SICAMERICANA  S.A.C.I.F.I.]. The matrix numbers (handwritten, almost illegible both sides) are: Side 1 - 14103 A, Side 2 - 14103 B.

Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina), Jul 1974 - first commercial release (textured sleeve):

Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina) - front scan by Ronald Born (first commercial release - crinkled surface)
This album has the standard sleeve (with "BOB DYLAN" on the front), with the same textured surface front and back. It was again made by Argentinean company Discos Music-Hall on behalf of Elektra Records. The record labels now have the Elektra “E” and butterfly.

Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina) - rear scan by Ronald Born (first commercial release - crinkled surface)

Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina) - detail of rear, scan by Ronald Born (all releases)

Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina) - detail of Side 1, scan by Ronald Born (first commercial release)

Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina) - Side 2 scan by Ronald Born (first commercial release)

There is a unique paper inner sleeve with the "obscene" sleeve notes translated into Spanish on the front (the only Spanish-language release where this occurs) and the song titles translated into Spanish on the rear. Again the matrix numbers are handwritten and almost impossible to read.

Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina), Jul 1974 - second commercial release (smooth sleeve):

Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina) - front scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (second commercial release - smooth surface)
This later commercial release has a front and rear sleeve that are totally smooth, unlike the crinkled texture of the promo and first commercial release sleeves. Otherwise, the sleeve (front and rear) is exactly the same, with the same paper inner sleeve. It was again made by Argentinean company Discos Music-Hall on behalf of Elektra Records. The labels again have the Elektra “E” and butterfly.
Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina) - front scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (second commercial release)

Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina) - Side 1 scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (second commercial release - different circumference text)

Music-Hall/Elektra 14103 (Argentina) - Side 2 scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (second commercial release - different circumference text)

The only obvious difference is in the text written in the circumference - the words "Industria Argentina – Fabricao y Distribuido por SICAMERICANA S.A.C.I.F.I. [Argentinean Industry – Manufactured and Distributed by SICAMERICANA  S.A.C.I.F.I.] are now missing. Again the matrix numbers are handwritten and almost impossible to read.

Thanks to Ronald Born and Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo 8-track tape cartridge releases, Music-Hall MH8T-1.401 (Argentina), Jan 1974:

Music-Hall MH8T-1.401 (Argentina) - front of slipcase, scan by Manuel García Jara (variant 1)
This 8-track cartridge release in a green slipcase was also made by Argentinean company Discos Music-Hall on behalf of Elektra Records and, like other 8-track releases, has the tracks of the album reordered to make up the four "programs". The titles are given in Spanish and English. The cartridge is beige with a green wraparound label.

The Argentinean running order is (different from all the other releases listed above):

Program 1: En Una Noche Como Esta [On A Night Like This]; Ojos Castanos [Hazel – it actually means “Brown Eyes”]; Algo Alli Habla De Ti [Something There Is About You]
Program 2: Poco A Poco Me Fui [Going, Going, Gone]; Es Dificil, Mama [Tough Mama]; Por Siempre Joven [Forever Young]
Program 3: Por Siempre Joven [Forever Young]; Canto Triste [Dirge]
Program 4: Tu Angel Tu [You Angel, You]; Nunca Digas Adios [Never Say Goodbye]; Cancion De Boda [Wedding Song (misprinted as “Weeding Song”!)].

Music-Hall MH8T-1.401 (Argentina) - end of tape cartridge, scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (variant 2 - black cartridge)

Sergio Mariano Romay's copy comes in a generic Music Hall slipcase and has a black cartridge, not beige. The cartridge has the same wraparound green label with the same "Weeding Song" mistake. "MAGAZINE" on the front of the Music Hall slipcase is the name that was used in Argentina for tape cartridges.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo vinyl LP, Elektra WEA 10523 (Colombia), Jan 1974 (two releases):

Elektra WEA 10523 (Colombia) - front scan by Gerd Rundel
This very rare Elektra release has "Bob Dylan" printed at front top left and an uncensored rear sleeve. This album was manufactured by Codiscos S.A. of Medellin, Colombia, for Elektra Records. It has a very thin paper sleeve printed by Codiscos with no spine text. The front and the rear portions of the sleeve are separate, and are held together by the shrink wrap, which is open at the right. Gerd's record has Elektra butterfly design labels and comes in a generic Codiscos inner sleeve. It has a stamped matrix number on Side 2 only - "WEA-10523-Z". The Side 1 matrix number should be "WEA-10523-Y", but the run-out area on Side 1 is too narrow to stamp it.

Elektra WEA 10523 (Colombia) - Side 2 scan by Sergio Mariano Romay (second release)

Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy in the same sleeve (front and rear) with two separate parts without a spine, held together by the shrink wrap, which is open at the right. “System of exclusive cover of “CODISCOS” according to Certificate of Patent…” is printed in Spanish on the rear of both sleeves. The two parts of Sergio's sleeve are made of card, not paper. The record comes in a completely different paper inner sleeve with pictures of other labels and artists (but no Dylan or The Band) released by Codiscos. The record labels have the same “E” of Elektra and the butterfly pre-printed, but the black text is different. To the left of the centre hole (both sides) “WEA. 10523”, "WEA. 10523-Y" and “Lado 1”/”WEA. 10523”, "WEA. 10523-Z" and “Lado 2” are in different type faces and sizes from those of Gerd's copy. On both sides the tracklisting is “compacted” compared with the tracklisting on Gerd's copy. This copy has the same matrix number, again on Side 2 only.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel and Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Ondas Planetarias [Planet Waves]" - test pressing, promo and commercial stereo vinyl LP releases, Elektra 113.005 (Uruguay), 1974:

Clave 113.005 (Uruguay) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (test pressing)

These very rare albums were manufactured and distributed by Clave I.E.M.S.A. of Montevideo, Uruguay, on behalf of Elektra Records. The test pressing was reportedly given as a gift by the Clave label to a DJ at a local radio station. The record comes in a cut-out Clave sleeve with a track title sticker in Spanish at top left of the rear. The record has Clave labels with typed text.

The fragile unlaminated commercial sleeve was printed in Uruguay by Publigraf. The front sleeve has Bob's name plus "SERIE WEA 113.005" at top left. Bob's name is misprinted as "BOD DYLAN" on all the record labels, which have the Elektra butterfly design with album and song titles in Spanish and English.

There is a stamp with the text "FONOGRAMA DE DIFUSION PROHIBIDA SU VENTA [PROMOTIONAL RECORD SALE FORBIDDEN" on the Side 1 label of the promo copy. The matrix numbers of both of Manuel's copies shown are: Side 1 - 7E-1003-A KENDUN, Side 2 - 7E-1003 B1-SP KENDUN.

Sergio Mariano Romay points out that the white text at the bottom of each record label reads "Elektra Records, 15 Columbus Circle, New York City 10023". For this reason he thinks the label blanks were sourced from the USA and the black text printed in Uruguay. Sergio's commercial copy comes in the same sleeve as Manuel's, but there are many differences on the record labels (which still have the "BOD DYLAN" error):

The matrix numbers of this copy are: Side 1 - 7E-1003A (handwritten) KENDUN (stamped) sm (handwritten, faintly); Side 2 - 7E-501 B-1 SP (handwritten) KENDUN (stamped) 7E 1003 B-1 SP O-I SMI- (faintly, almost illegible).

This very rare album was made and distributed by Polydor S.A., Caracas, Venezuela, on behalf of Asylum Records. It has "Bob Dylan" printed at front top left (not a sticker) and an uncensored rear sleeve. The record has the blue Asylum door and clouds design labels. Before The Flood has the next catalogue number, LP-130.002, so was released at the same time.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding this on eBay and to Manuel García Jara for further information.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo vinyl LP release, Asylum/Asfona 7E-1003 (Chile), 1975:

Asylum/Asfona 7E-1003 (Chile) - front scan by Manuel García Jara
This very rare album was manufactured and distributed by Asfona M.R. of Santiago, Chile, on behalf of Asylum Records. ("Asfona" means "National Phonographic Association".) The sleeve was printed by Astral Ltda in Chile and is made of good quality recycled card. Unusually, it opens at the top to insert the record, not the side as usual. The front sleeve has the Asfona logo plus "...ES CHILENA! [...IS CHILEAN!]" at top right. The rear sleeve has a black border, the "obscene" sleeve notes and has "SERIE ESPECIAL DE LUJO [SPECIAL LUXURY SERIES]" at top right.

The record has blue Asylum labels similar to the Lebanese labels above and the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - 7E-1003-A (in very tiny writing), Side 2: 7E-1003-B  EB-C 24-5-75 (Pressing date 24 May 1975). Sergio Mariano Romay points out that Side 1 of the record does actually have a matrix number, but because of space limitations it is very small and easy to miss.

Planet Waves was released on the Elektra label (EKC 6036) in South Africa, Rhodesia and Mozambique, but Before The Flood was released by Asylum. The Asylum Planet Waves release must be a reissue made by Asylum when Before The Flood was released on that label. These releases have "Bob Dylan" printed in hand lettering matching the album title at top left. Neither of the releases has a censored rear sleeve.

The first South African release was made by Elektra Records. The sleeve was printed by Artone Press and the rear sleeve has two folded-over flaps and the Artone Press logo at bottom right. The record has pale green Elektra labels with the butterfly logo and matrix numbers: Side 1 - EKC-6036-A, Side 2 - EKC-6036-B.

The second South African release was made by Asylum Records instead of Elektra and it has the US catalogue number, but surprisingly the record has the same matrix numbers as the South African Elektra edition: Side 1 - EKC-6036-A, Side 2 - EKC-6036-B.  The Asylum sleeve has the same front as the Elektra release. The rear sleeve again has two folded-over flaps and the Artone Press logo at bottom right, but it has the Asylum logo instead of the Elektra logo. The record labels have the classic "door in clouds" Asylum design and they have similar elements to the South African Before The Flood labels (e.g. "SPEED 33,3" to the left of the centre hole, identical circumference text).

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - promo stereo vinyl LP release, Elektra/Teal EKC 6036 (Rhodesia), 1974: commercial stereo vinyl LP release, Elektra EKC 6036 (Rhodesia), 1974:

Elektra/Teal EKC 6036 (Rhodesia) - front scan by Arie de Reus (promo release)

The promo release from what was then Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) is incredibly rare and has a negative image front and rear sleeve. This is the only known occurrence of this version of the sleeve worldwide.

The promo record has white labels and the promo album was manufactured by the Teal Record Company for Elektra. This copy is said to have been made specially for the Elektra record company head in Rhodesia. Arie de Reus says he and a Danish collector have the only known copies, although I have now heard from Jan Welter who bought a copy in Pietermaritzberg in South Africa.

Elektra/Warner EKC 6036 (Rhodesia) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (commercial release)

Manuel García Jara has a commercial copy with regular Elektra labels. This was manufactured by WEA Records (Pty) Ltd., a Warner subsidiary, for Elektra. The sleeve was printed by Artone Press and the rear has unique white panels in the gold border at top and bottom. The record label design is quite different from that of the South African record labels, and the songs are copyrighted by Reveille Music, not Ram's Horn Music.

Warner Bros/Teal EKC 6036 (Mozambique) - detail of rear, scan by Manuel García Jara (1976 release - "Maputo")

The commercial release from the neighbouring country of Mozambique is also incredibly rare. It was manufactured for Elektra Records by Teal Discos LDA, Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), Mozambique, which was a Portuguese colony until 25 Jun 1975. It has a very thin outer sleeve without spine lettering and a Teal Discos generic inner sleeve which is plain on the other side. It has matrix numbers: Side 1 - EKC 6036A, Side 2 - EKC 6036B.

The album was reissued in an even rarer version after independence in 1976, again by Teal, in almost the same sleeve, but this time the city name was Maputo instead of Lourenço Marques. The record now had Warner Bros "Burbank palm trees" labels instead of Elektra labels and had the same matrix numbers as before.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel and Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

Vinyl and Tape Releases (1982 onwards)

In 1982 rights to release the album were purchased by Sony, so releases after that date are on Columbia, CBS or CBS/Sony. The original vinyl and tape releases on Asylum, Elektra or Island are in the section above.

Rejected replacement 1982 front sleeve, scan by Arie de Reus
When Columbia bought the rights to the Asylum albums in 1982 they planned to re-release the album with yet another front sleeve. The sepia photo is also uncredited but in his article "Looking Up Dylan's Sleeves (Part 3)" in "The Telegraph", issue 52, Rod MacBeath thinks it might be by Lynn Goldsmith from around 1976. The original front artwork appears only as a thumbnail on the rear of the sleeve. This design was eventually rejected in favour of reusing the Asylum sleeve. For Electric Lunch, a 1982 US Columbia promo 12" mini-album with selections from Planet Waves and Before The Flood, see International Albums (Dylan-only Compilations) 1980-89.

"Columbia" is erased with black marker pen twice on the rear sleeve and also on the spine. The ring of Columbia labels on the record labels are covered, but this time the black ring looks as if it has been painted on to the labels with black ink, not a glued-on sticker as many other export releases. The matrix numbers of the record shown are: Side 1 - P AL 37637 1 A COLUMBIA NY, Side 2 - P BL 37637 1 A COLUMBIA NY.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - 180gm test pressings and stereo vinyl release, Mobile Fidelity MFSL 1-443 (USA), 29 May 2014/Nov 2015:

Mobile Fidelity MFSL 1-443 (USA) - test pressing Side 1 scan by Gerd Rundel (variant 2)

Both test pressings were made by RTI (Record Technology Inc.) for Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs.

The first record comes in a plain white sleeve with sticker at front top right. Side 1 has a generic RTI label and is dated 29 May 2014 while Side 2 has a plain white label. The sticker is mistitled with “Elvis Costello: Blood & Chocolate”, however the catalogue number on the sticker and matrix numbers on the record is for Planet Waves and also the record plays Planet Waves. The record of this copy has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - MFSL 1-443 A1 plus 22733.1 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 2 - MFSL 1-443 B1 plus 22733.2 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite.

The second record comes in a plain white sleeve, this time with sticker at front top left. The sticker is now correct! Side 1 has an undated generic RTI label while Side 2 again has a plain white label. The record of this copy has later handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - MFSL 1-443 A2 plus 23555.1 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite, Side 2 - MFSL 1-443 B2 plus 23555.2 (3), KW @ MoFi opposite.

In the matrix numbers, “KW @ MoFi” means that the records were mastered by Krieg Wunderlich of Mobile Fidelity.

The commercial release was not until Nov 2015, when there was also a limited edition hybrid SA-CD release, see below.

Columbia PCT 37637 (USA) - insert scan by Gerd Rundel ("BOB DYLAN" in red, reverse is blank)
This cassette was released after the album rights were transferred to Columbia. The artwork is absolutely minimal, just a crop of the album cover and a tracklist. Gerd Rundel's copy has a grey cassette with black text printed directly on to it, there are no paper labels. Jack Guerreiro's later copy has a clear cassette with identical text, this time in white. The inserts look identical apart from the colour of "BOB DYLAN".

These albums were released after the album rights were transferred to Columbia. The sleeve and orange/yellow CBS record labels have the catalogue number "CBS 32154". The sleeve was printed by Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd.; the gold rear sleeve omits the "obscene" liner notes, and has the PPL Ganton Street address. It also has the "HOME TAPING IS KILLING MUSIC" logo at bottom left and the "LC|0149" capsule at bottom right.

This UK release is from between 1982 and 1984 and comes in the same sleeve as the 1982 release, but the record labels have some differences compared to the 1982 release:

  • there are no arrows to the left of the centre hole

  • there is no text at the bottom of the labels and “MADE IN ENGLAND” is now in the circumference text

  • The songs are credited to "Warner Bros. Music Ltd." instead of "Big Ben Music Ltd.".

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo vinyl releases, CBS 32154 (Ireland), ca. 1982:

CBS 32154 (Ireland) - Side 1 scan by Gerd Rundel

Gerd Rundel's rare Irish copy comes in the same sleeve as listed for the 1982 UK release (e.g. "Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd.", the PPL Ganton Street address and the "HOME TAPING IS KILLING MUSIC" logo).

CBS 32154 (Ireland) - detail of Side 1, scan by Gerd Rundel ("Record mfd. in Ireland")

CBS 32154 (Ireland) - Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel

The record has “Record mfd. in Ireland” and also “MADE IN ENGLAND” at the bottom of the labels. The label has several "old style" features: the record speed to the left of the centre hole is “33” rpm and the "LC|0149" code is missing. The song titles are centred. The record of the copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS-32154-A1, Side 2 - CBS-32154-B1 (same as the three UK copies).

This cassette was released after the album rights were transferred to CBS in 1982. The cassette is light grey with printed text in black, there are no paper labels. For some bizarre reason Tough Mama is repeated at the end of Side 2 but not listed, both sides of the insert and Side 2 of the cassette have been annotated by the original owner.

Columbia/Simply Vinyl SVLP 331 (UK) - picture from eil.com ("BOB DYLAN")
This is a licensed re-release of the original album on 180gm vinyl. The eil.com copy shown has a sticker with "BOB DYLAN" at top left of the front sleeve, Patrick Helfrich's copy (still sealed in clear plastic), doesn't have it. There is a silver Simply Vinyl sticker on the front outer cover. The copy owned by Manuel García Jara has the Simply Vinyl sticker at top left anyway. The album has a gold rear sleeve with a barcode omitting the original 1974 sleeve notes. The record has red Columbia labels dated 2000.

CBS 32154 (NL) - Side 1 scan by Patrick Helfrich (commercial copy)

CBS 32154 (NL) - Side 2 scan by Patrick Helfrich (commercial copy)

This is the CBS re-release of the original Asylum album (the transfer of rights took place in 1982). The album was made in Holland, and it has a gold rear sleeve omitting the original 1974 sleeve notes plus the text "Previously available on Asylum 7E-1003". Patrick Helfrich has two copies - the gold sleeve is noticeably lighter on the commercial copy than on the promo copy below, also it has no front sticker as shown below and no stars on the labels. With other Dutch releases, the record labels with the stars are normally later than those without. The numbers in the capsule below the catalogue number on the rear sleeves are also different - the commercial copy has "CB|231" and the promo copy below has "CB|211" (below). These are apparently distribution codes.

Both records have orange/yellow CBS labels with the same matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL-37637-1J COLUMBIA NY (stamped) 01-85356-2A-1 01-32154-2A-1 (handwritten), Side 2 - BL-37637-101-85356-1B-1 (stamped), 01-32154-1B-1 (handwritten).

CBS 32154 (NL for West Germany), 14 Apr 1982 (promo copy):

CBS 32154 (NL for West Germany) - front with sticker, scan by Patrick Helfrich (promo copy)

The second copy was again made in Holland and has a sticker with "BOB DYLAN" and "32154" at the upper left of the front sleeve and a German promo "Plattenpass [Record Passport]" folded card inside. This copy, which must be a promo given out in West Germany, has stars on the record labels above the catalogue number to the right of the centre hole. As stated before, the rear gold sleeve is noticeably darker than that of the Dutch commercial copy. The German promo record card was issued by the CBS Press Department in Frankfurt am Main on 14 Apr 1982. It has the track details on the back and a description of the album and its background in German on the inside, as well as details of five other Dylan albums of the 1978-1981 period immediately preceding this re-release on CBS.

The late 1980s release comes in the same sleeve as Patrick Helfrich's commercial copy above and now has a “NICE PRICE” sticker on the front. The record has red CBS labels and comes in an original “NICE PRICE” inner sleeve showing albums from this series. The copy of the late 1980s record shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-32154-1A-1 (handwritten), P AL-37637-1L (stamped), Side 2 - 01-32154-1B-1 (stamped), 01-85356-1B-1 (stamped), BL 37637-1H (stamped), plus "COLUMBIA NY" stamped on each side of the vinyl.

The 1982 rear sleeve is the Dutch promo CBS 32154 variant with "CB|211" in the capsule below the catalogue number on the rear sleeve at top right. The late 1980s rear sleeve has "CB|231" as the 1982 and late 1980s Dutch CBS commercial copies. The front sleeve of the late 1980s release has a red/white/black CBS "NICE PRICE" sticker. The 1982 record was made in Greece and has orange/yellow CBS labels with the "BIEM/STEMRA" Dutch copyright organisation logo to the right of the centre hole, although these labels are completely different from the Dutch labels. The circumference text is in English and Greek. Both Hans Seegers' and Arie de Reus' 1982 copies have matrix numbers: Side 1 - 01-32154-A  P AL-37637-1J COLUMBIA NY GREECE (all stamped), Side 2 - P BL-37637-1L  COLUMBIA NY (stamped), 01-32154-B (written) GREECE (stamped). Lars M. Banke's late 1980s record has red CBS labels which have the same central text layout as the 1982 labels but different circumference text. The record also has the same matrix numbers.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and to Patrick Helfrich, Arie de Reus and Lars M. Banke for scans.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - stereo vinyl LP reissues, CBS SBP 237706 (Australia)/CBS SBP 237 706 (New Zealand), 1982:
For the original 1974 Australia and New Zealand Asylum releases of Planet Waves, see above.

CBS SBP 237706 (Australia), 1982:

PlanetWavesAusCBSFront.jpg (18860 bytes)
CBS SBP 237706 (Australia) - front scan by Rob Cole

The 1982 Australian CBS reissue had the replacement gold rear sleeve without the sleeve notes. Like the second 1974 Asylum release, the sleeve was of smooth card. It also had a CBS "Nice Price" insert listing then current CBS albums. The record has orange/yellow CBS labels.

Early Australian release labels had the text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS copyright. This is because up to 1977 all Australian records were manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after that date the longer bottom edge text includes the CBS copyright information. The record has orange/yellow CBS labels with the longer copyright text along the bottom.

The record has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - CBS SBP 237706 A, Side 2 - CBS SBP 237706 B.

The record has light orange Harmony labels. Sergio Mariano Romay has a copy in the same sleeve with alternate record labels, with “Stereo/Mono” arrows plus “33” to the left of the centre hole. The matrix numbers (faintly handwritten on both sides) are: Side 1 - 148.075-A  1-1-16  AL-37637, Side 2 - 148.075-B  1-1-16  BL-37637.

CBS 32154 (PR) (Spain) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (1985 release)
This is one of four CBS releases of this album from after 1982. The "(PR)" in the catalogue number on the rear sleeve stands for "Precio Redondo" or "Nice Price". The "obscene" sleeve notes are missing from the gold rear sleeve. The record was made in Spain by Discos CBS S.A., Paseo de la Castellana 93, 28046 - Madrid, and the sleeve was printed by Offset ALG. The record has orange/yellow CBS labels with titles in English and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1- 321544-A0 (this number matrix must be wrong: 321544), Side 2 - 32154-B0.

The album was released in Spain in the late 1980s with the same sleeve as before, not yet with a barcode on the rear. The copy shown has two record store stickers on the rear sleeve at top right and bottom right, one with price €9.50 (Lars' late 1980s Spanish copy of Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid has exactly the same two stickers). The record was made by Tecnodisco S.A. of Madrid for Discos CBS and has red CBS labels dated 1974 with titles in English.

Bob Dylan & The Band - "Planet Waves" - Blu-spec CD release, Sony Music SICP 20224 (Japan), 30 Sep 2009:

Sony Music SICP 20224 (Japan) - front with obi, scan by Hans Seegers
This release is on a Blu-spec CD, an audio-only disc which is presumably intended to be Sony's new high quality audio format, currently on sale in Japan only. The copy shown is still sealed, with a blue and white obi with price ¥2,500 (¥2,381 before tax). The release date is shown as "09-9-30" (30 Sep 2009), the original release date as "74-1-17" (17 Jan 1974) and the withdrawal date as "10-3-29" (29 Mar 2010). It's not actually a Blu-ray disc as it says on the sticker, but it is made using Blu-ray technology.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.

All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK14" plus "DISC 15". The gold rear sleeve reproduces the design of the 1982 CBS reissue of the album without the "obscene" sleeve notes. The CDs are different in detail, the US Planet Waves CD has catalogue number "88691924312D15", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-15". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.

For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson and Éamonn Ó Catháin for news that The Complete Album Collection was released in Japan in four decade-related parts, with the intention to release them all in 2014. The Blu-Spec CD2 specification CDs come in card sleeves with printed inner sleeves and "SONY MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA" on the discs. Bob's 1970s albums from Self Portrait to Slow Train Coming were released in Japan on 23 Apr 2014 in card sleeves as Blu-Spec CD2 discs numbered Sony Music SICP 30482 to SICP 30500. The 2013 remastered Planet Waves is SICP 30489, more details will be added when available.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
