This is part of a list by release date of international (now including the USA, which was once listed separately) promo and commercially-released stereo 7" and 12" singles and EPs for 1979 that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know many are not included on any other Internet site. Special thanks to Hans Seegers for many of these items! Stereo promo versions of commercially released singles that were formerly listed in the Promotional Items sections of the yearly pages are now listed here. Singles released in this time period exclusively for promotional purposes are now here also. I would also like to include cassette singles here, but I don't have any, and none have been notified to me so far.

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Revised 13 July, 2017.

"Maggie's Farm"/"All Along The Watchtower" - 7" stereo singles, CBS 7468 (France), 1979:

Budokan7FrFront.jpg (27578 bytes)
CBS 7468 (France) - front scan by Hans Seegers

Both tracks are live versions from the Bob Dylan At Budokan album.

This record has "injection" labels - in this case a thin brown plastic ring-shaped layer is injected into the record itself, and the text/graphics are cut out using a stamp so that the black vinyl underneath shows through, there is no paper label. There are three colour variants: the first is a burnt ochre colour and the second is more like red ochre (this may be due to production issues rather than deliberate policy, since other injection singles occur with colour variants too). Ronald Born's copy has the lightest colour of the three, but this may again just be a production variant. "Watchtower" is misspelled as "WATCHOWER" on each B-side.

This very rare "Special Club" France-only edition 12" single for DJs has the same track on both sides (the regular album version from Slow Train Coming). The reverse of the sleeve is blank except for the CBS France address, etc. The only difference between the A- and B-sides is that the A-side has one star to the right of the centre hole, whereas the B-side has two stars. The record comes in a printed inner sleeve with French text on the front (not shown).

For 7" versions of this French "Animals" single with Trouble In Mind (R-0149) as the B-side, see 1979. For the 1980 French "Special Club" 12" single of Gotta Serve Somebody, see below.

Animals7NLFront.jpg (24972 bytes)
CBS 7970 (NL) - front scan by Hans Seegers (promo and commercial releases)

Both tracks are the regular album versions. Promo copies of the Dutch single came in the commercial sleeve with a promo stamp on the back and with the commercial record. The sleeve opens at the top, not the right side. The Spanish single was released three times - once in 1979 with the full title of the A-side and twice in 1979 and 1980 with just "ANIMALS". The record itself in the second and third Spanish "ANIMALS" releases was identical (the only difference is the date on the rear sleeve.

For a UK promo of this single, see above. For an Italian jukebox release of the A-side with a song by Ellen Foley on the B-side, also see above.

CBS/Sony 06SP 433 (Japan)- front scan by Hans Seegers (promo and commercial releases)

This single from Japan has a unique coloured version of the album cover picture on the front and the same two tracks as above. It was released in promo and commercial versions. The rear sleeve of Wil Gielen's promo copy has a red date stamp "54.11.21". This is the date 21 Nov 1979, because "54" was for the 54th year of the reign of the Emperor Showa in the Japanese calendar, which corresponded to 1979 in the Western calendar. The promo record has white CBS/Sony labels and the commercial record has orange labels.

"El Hombre Le Dio Nombre A Todo Los Animales [Man Gave Names To All The Animals]"/"Cuando El Regrese [When He Returns]" - 7" test pressing, promo and commercial singles, Columbia 23.119 (Argentina), 1979:

Columbia 23.119 (Argentina) - test pressing A-side scan by Hans Seegers (promo single)
These singles had no picture sleeve. The test pressing has a Discos CBS red/orange label with rubber-stamped text in Spanish. The B-side is blank with a plain white label. The promo and commercial records have red Columbia labels with the yellow Columbia logo in a ring. The promo single has the extra text "DISCO PROMOCIONAL PROHIBIDA LE VENTA [PROMOTIONAL DISC SALE PROHIBITED]" on two lines above "BOB DYLAN".

For the test pressing and the promo single the standard CBS Argentina sleeves are stamped with "DISCO PARA DEMOSTRACION VENTA PROHIBIDA [DEMONSTRATION DISC SALE PROHIBITED]" on two lines on the promo single. For pictures of the sleeves used for these releases, together with the regular sleeve used for commercial singles, see 7" Single Sleeves. Jim Siddy has a commercial copy which has the text "A020553" very faintly imprinted on both record labels (almost impossible to see on a photo).
