This page collects song performances from regular Dylan albums on VHS video and DVD included in films in the 1980s (I'm ignoring any editing or talking over them). I would be grateful for any additional information on these items and other material to place here. Films are listed by date of original appearance (in theatres or on TV), not when the VHS video or DVD came out, often some years later. For the audio soundtrack albums on which these songs often also appear, see International Album Releases (Various Artists Compilations).
For a full Dylan filmography, see "Expecting Rain" or "TV Talkin'" . For informed discussion of all Bob's screen appearances, see C.P. Lee's well-received book "Like A Bullet Of Light".
All scans that aren't credited are from my own collection or www.amazon.com.
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

"Where The Buffalo Roam" - feature film released 1980, VHS and
Betamax: MCA Home Video (catalogue numbers?) (USA), 1980:
For the 1980 audio soundtrack album, see
International Album Releases (Various Artists
Compilations).
According to Jack from Canada all of the songs on the original soundtrack but two have now been removed for copyright reasons, so Highway 61 Revisited (and All Along The Watchtower) appear only in the original 1980 VHS and Betamax releases of the film and not in any DVD version of the film. The pictures of DVD releases that used to appear in this entry have therefore been removed as they have no Dylan content. To purchase these film posters, visit the Nostalgia Factory (this is not a paid link).
Bob has quite an association with Hunter S. Thompson!
For the 1998 film Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas (also based on a Hunter S. Thompson book and which also has a Dylan track), see VHS & DVD: Films with Dylan Album Tracks 1990s.
For Hunter S. Thompson - Where Were You When The Fun Stopped?, an EMI UK compilation CD also with Mr Tambourine Man from Bringing It All Back Home, see the 1999 page of International Compilations: Various Artists Albums with Dylan Songs.
For Breakfast With Hunter, a 2003 documentary by Wayne Ewing about Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, see VHS & DVD: Films with Dylan Album Tracks - 2000s Part 1.
For Gonzo: The Life And Work Of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, a 2008 documentary by Alex Gibney, see VHS & DVD (Films with Dylan Album Tracks) 2000s Part 2 and the 2008 page of International Compilations: Various Artists Albums with Dylan Songs.

"Underground U.S.A." - New Line Cinema feature film released 1980, no VHS or DVD release (USA), 1980:
UK film poster from www.amazon.co.uk |
This film about the US underground film
scene directed by Eric Mitchell stars Patti Astor as Vickie, and includes
Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat from Blonde On Blonde. "Bomb" magazine (www.bombsite.com)
says
"As
played by Patti Astor, Vickie is clearly meant to represent Edie Sedgwick,
the superstar of Warhol’s legendary cinematic psychodramas".
Indeed, some believe that Edie Sedgwick was Bob's inspiration for this song,
see The Blonde On Blonde

This film has been released on DVD a number of times,
again each time with very different artwork. There are probably a lot more
worldwide releases than shown. The 1997 US DVD release was Region 0, and could be played in the UK where it was released by Stimulus. Five Corners also appears in US DVD double packs with Shocked (1985, also known as Mesmerized), also starring Jodie Foster, and Who Shot Pat? (1989), starring Sandra Bullock. |
