The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Live 1975 (2002)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

For releases of this album in Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

Revised 11 February, 2017.

Final front design, 2004
US release (2CD set), Columbia/Legacy C2K 86882, 30 Mar 2004.

Although initial information was that it would be released as a two disc hybrid SA-CD set in CD stereo, SA-CD stereo and SA-CD 5.1 surround sound, this much postponed set was finally been released in stereo only, although an SA-CD version must have been created by Columbia but not released after all.

All I Really Want To Do from this album was included on a 6-track SA-CD sampler handed out at the Home Entertainment Show in San Francisco, CA, in Jun 2003 - see 2003. As this is in both SA-CD stereo and SA-CD 5.1 surround sound as well as stereo it is now a rarity. The full SA-CD version of the album in both stereo and 5.0 surround sound will be released by Audio Fidelity as a numbered limited edition in 2016.

Spanish Harlem Incident from this album was made available for download from the Apple iTunes Online Music Store in May 2003, see Online Performances.

This much-bootlegged concert was recorded live at New York Philharmonic Hall, 31 Oct 1964. It's known to collectors as the "Halloween Mask" concert, because Bob says at one point "It's Halloween, and I'm wearing my Bob Dylan mask!" The source of this Columbia album is not the same as the various bootlegs that circulate, and in far better quality. Joan Baez guested at the concert and appears on four tracks on the album. Her performance of Silver Dagger, on which Bob played guitar and harmonica, is incomplete on all circulating tapes, so is included here in full for Dylan fans for the first time.

Front design used in early promotional material, 2003 - what a shame this picture wasn't used for the final release!

Poster for the concert given free with first US purchases

"Large Selection of Masks" - the picture used in early promo material for the front design of this album, taken at 7th Avenue/49th Street, New York City, by Columbia staff photographer Sandy Speiser, who also took the photograph used for 1964's Another Side Of Bob Dylan

Tracks previously released officially:

Five live tracks from the "Goldmine Acetates", Columbia acetates which surfaced in 1980:

R-0389 You Gotta Go [If You Gotta Go, Go Now]

R-0397 Never Have Met [I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)]

R-0398 Mr. Tambourine Man

R-0399 A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall

R-0400 Gates of Eden

These acetates also included:

R-0220 Mama, You've Been On My Mind - live with Joan Baez, Philharmonic Hall, New York City, 31 Oct 1964, from her Vanguard boxed set Rare, Live & Classic, 1993

Classic Records/Columbia Legacy C2K-86882-140/200 (USA) - picture from Classic Records web-site
This 3LP set is sold in normal vinyl (140gm) and heavyweight vinyl (200gm) versions. The only difference apart from the records is the sticker on the box front. The records are all picture discs.

Thanks to Richard Batey for pointing out that this release has a misprint on the spine of the box, where it says "The Bootleg Series Vol. 5"! The title on the front of the box is correct. The box was subsequently released with a sticker over the spine with the correct text.

The postcard shown reproduces the original New York poster advertising the concert.

Thanks to Patrick Helfrich, Keith Venturoni and Stuart Moore for information and scans.

CD Releases

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall" - 2CD-R promo set, Columbia (catalogue number?) (USA), Jan 2004:

Photograph found on eBay by Jean-Pol Hiernaux
This promo set is housed in two clear single CD jewel cases. The front inserts look as if they're from a PC printer.

Harold Lepidus informs me that early promo copies start with a stage announcement but lter promo copies as below and the commercial release do not. Because this is a rarity, these early copies, which have no artwork and are on CD-Rs, are also listed in 2004. Various song introductions which occur throughout the performance and Bob's introduction of Joan Baez are separate CD tracks here but they're merged with the songs on the later promos and the commercial release.

The stage announcement (followed by applause and a short silence) is: "Before we begin, I have one announcement to make. (Applause.) It’s two fold. There’s no smoking in the house, and absolutely no pictures, please!"

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for finding these on eBay.

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall" - 2CD promo set, Columbia AC2K 86882 (USA), Jan 2004:

Columbia AC2K 86882 (USA) - booklet front, scan by Jens Winter
This promo set is housed in a clear slimline 2CD jewel case. The front insert is black with the words "The Bootleg Series Vol. 6 Bob Dylan Live 1964" written across the top all in white, with the word "Live" in orange. Across the bottom it says "Concert at Philharmonic Hall, October 31, 1964." The date is in orange.

On the reverse side is the track list and catalogue number AC2K 86882 at top left. Inside the folded card there is a short narrative about the concert with the photo first shown as the probable cover (Dylan in front of the masks) faded as a backdrop with the text over the top (see left)

The discs are white with red lettering, in the old Columbia album style and numbered "ACK 86913" and "ACK 86914". They have "Columbia" across the top, with "Bob Dylan The Bootleg Series Vol. 6" underneath. The text "Concert at Philharmonic Hall, October 31, 1964" is below the centre hole. Included with the promo set is the text of the liner notes that will be in the commercial release booklet.

The discs from Jens Winter have "DJ COPY" on them, next to the left-hand Columbia logo. Jack Guerreiro has a promo set with the same front insert, but the discs do not have the "DJ COPY" text.

Thanks to Hervé from France for initial information plus Jens Winter and Jack Guerreiro for scans.

Columbia SAMPCD 13806 2 (UK) - front of outer sleeve, scan by Gerd Rundel
This promo set comes in a card sleeve with the tracklisting on the reverse. The CDs are white with black text and are in individual card sleeves inside the larger one. These have monochrome pictures in contrast to the colour photo on the outer sleeve.

Paul Shenton points out that the set was supposed to have a 52-page booklet (the commercial booklet is 56 pages), but did not have one (it could not have fit inside the card sleeve). The title on the outer and inner sleeves is "Volume 6" rather than "Vol. 6" on the commercial release. The song titles on the sleeves and discs of CDs 1 and 2 are the same as those of the commercial releases except that I Don't Believe You (song 9 on CD1) has lost "(She Acts Like We Never Have Met)".

Thanks to Hervé from France and Paul Shenton for information and to Gerd Rundel for scans.

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall" - 2CD set, Columbia/Legacy C2K 86882 (USA), 30 Mar 2004; Columbia/Legacy COL 512358 2 (Austria for Europe), 29 Mar 2004; Columbia/Legacy 5123582000 (Australia/New Zealand), 26 Apr 2004:

Columbia/Legacy C2K 86882 (USA):

Columbia/Legacy C2K 86882 (USA) - front scan by Gil Lamont

This release is in a slipcase with a 56-page booklet including an essay by Sean Wilentz, who attended the 1964 show, and many previously unpublished photographs. The booklet front uses the "Large Selection of Masks" picture by Sandy Speiser.

The CDs are in a single-width jewel case which has a folded front insert. The colour tints of the photographs are as shown - only the ones on the inside of the front insert and the reverse of the rear insert are in true black and white.

Thanks to Gil Lamont for scans of the US release, which has a yellow sticker with completely different text from the UK orange sticker below. This release also has an insert advertising the MTV Unplugged DVD (see VHS & DVD 1990s Part 1) and earlier releases in The Bootleg Series. Gil's sharp eyes have noticed a typo on the reverse of this insert - Vol. 4 of The Bootleg Series is listed as "Live 1964" instead of "Live 1966"! Thanks also to Jack Guerreiro for the scan of the sticker adverting MTV Unplugged from his copy.

Columbia/Legacy COL 512358 2 (Europe):

Columbia/Legacy COL 512358 2 (Europe) - slipcase front with UK sticker (my copy)
Apart from the different front sticker, the European release is virtually the same as the US release.

Columbia/Legacy 5123582000 (Australia/New Zealand) - slipcase front with Australian sticker, scan by Stuart Moore

Thanks to Bill Hester for this information about the Australia/New Zealand release: "The Aussie version has the 56 page booklet and all the slip case, inserts, booklet pictures look exactly the same as the US and UK releases. The release date was about 26 April 2004 in Australia, and about the same in New Zealand.

The catalogue number is Columbia/Legacy  5123582000, manufactured in Australia by Sony Music (Australia). The inserts, slipcase and the booklet have "www.sonymusic.co.au" as well as "www.sonymusic.co.nz". The actual CDs do not say where manufactured but have the Columbia/Legacy 5123582000 catalogue number on them. The only minor difference between the Australian and New Zealand releases is that the sticker on the New Zealand slip case is transparent, stuck directly to the slipcase with the text below."

Wil Gielen's promo copy has a numbered promo sticker on the bottom of the slipcase and text "SAMPLE LOANED" in the clear centre of each CD.

The second booklet contains:

  1. The lyrics to all of the songs (incl. "Silver Dagger") in Japanese and English, and even including all of Dylan's spoken introductions to the songs. For example the entry for I Don't Believe You starts with "Oh, God. Here's the second verse of it. Hey, does anybody know the first verse of this song ? (I can't understand) Oh, I can't understand....".

  2. A two-page advert for the 15 SA-CD releases

  3. Text in Japanese, presumably a commentary about the album.

Thanks to Jens Winter, Hans Seegers and Wil Gielen for further information and scans.

Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88697732912 (Europe) - CD2 scan by Arie de Reus

This "budget" release made in Austria has only the two audio CDs in a slimline 2CD jewel case. There is no slipcase. It is dated 2010 and the CDs and inserts have the "Sony Music" logo.

Thanks to Arie de Reus for information and scans.

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall" - 2 SA-CD set, Audio Fidelity AFZ 230 (USA), Mar 2016:

Audio Fidelity AFZ 230 (USA) - picture from Steve Hoffman forum
Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin and Gerd Rundel for news that The Bootleg Series Vol. 6 - Bob Dylan Live 1964: Concert At Philharmonic Hall from 2004 will be released on SA-CD in stereo and 5.0 surround sound remastered by Steve Hoffman in Mar 2016. As this is a numbered limited edition, the 5.0 surround sound tracks will be rarities.
Audio Fidelity AFZ 230 (USA) - front scan by Gerd Rundel

Audio Fidelity AFZ 230 (USA) - rear scan by Gerd Rundel

Thanks to Keith Venturoni for information that this release also includes the stage announcement preceding The Times They Are A-Changin' which was previously found only on early promo copies of this set in 2004. Because this is a rarity, this release is also listed in 2004. However, Bowie Hurde informs me that some banter from Bob Dylan included on the original Columbia/Legacy release has been deleted. Dylan's introduction to Gates Of Eden “This is called a sacrilegious lullaby in D minor. That is the D minor. No in all seriousness….” has been completely removed. This is apparently missing from the regular stereo and the stereo SA-CD layers, but it is included on the surround sound mix. This appears to have been an error on behalf of the Sony Music team that supplied Audio Fidelity with the original tapes, but it is unlikely to be corrected.
