This is a separate multi-year list by release date of commercially-released Various Artist stereo compilation albums released in 2002 that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only Bob Dylan performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo-only Various Artist compilation albums with Dylan tracks are now included in this list. Other International Albums and Compilations are now here:
If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!
Revised 16 September, 2024.

Various Artists - "The Folk Years: A Singer And Songwriter Collection" - compilation 8CD set, Time-Life 18857-P (USA), Jan 2002; "The Folk Years: Simple Song Of Freedom" - extracted compilation 2CD set, Time-Life/Sony Music R812-22/A2 59738 (USA), 2003; "The Folk Years" - extracted compilation 3CD set, Time-Life M18942G (USA), 2005:
Time-Life 18857-P (USA) - front of box, scan by Hans Seegers (2002 8CD set) |
This set comprises four 2CD sets - CDs 7 and 8 are called Simple Song Of Freedom (Time-Life 70221), and Bob's contribution is on CD7 which has Boots Of Spanish Leather from The Times They Are A-Changin', along with Harry Belafonte's Midnight Special where Bob plays harmonica. As this is a rarity, full details are in 2002. CD8 contains Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds. CDs 7 and 8 were also released separately in 2003 as a 2CD set called Simple Song Of Freedom (Time-Life/Sony Music R812-22/A2 59738). Thanks to Fred Muller for finding a 2005 3CD set online where CDs 1 and 2 are the same as CDs 7 & 8 of this set and to Jack from Canada for scans. Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans. |

Various Artists - "Singers And Songwriters: 1964-1969" - compilation 2CD set, Time-Life TL SSW/13 (NL for Europe), 2002:
For other albums in this Time-Life Singers And Songwriters series containing Dylan songs, see the 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2010 pages of this Various Artist Compilations list. Bizarrely, there was a 2001 Time-Life compilation called Singers And Songwriters: 1965-1969 with a different Dylan track.
Thanks to Peter Oudejans and Hans Seegers for information and scans.

Bob's contribution is Honest With Me from "Love And Theft". This is just the regular album track - not an exclusive Grammy rehearsal performance as wrongly reported in the Dylan fanzine "Series Of Dreams", issue 90. Not only was the album released before the Grammy rehearsals took place, but also Bob rehearsed only Cry A While, the song he performed live on the show. For a US Columbia promo CD single with a radio edit of Honest With Me, released to coincide with the Grammy Awards, see 2002. |

Warner/DRO 5046622192 (Spain)
- detail of rear of slipcase, scan by Manuel García Jara
This compilation double CD set has exactly the same tracks as the German and Australians release above and again includes Mr. Tambourine Man from Bringing It All Back Home (again track 1 on CD2). It even has the same rear notes in English. It comes in a 2CD slimline jewel case inside a slipcase and has a multiple folded front insert. It was made in Spain by Warner and DRO (Discos Radioactivos Organizados) and sponsored by Antena 3, a Spanish TV channel. It has the bizarre title "100% Classic Pop", but from the artists list (Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Paul Simon, Tracey Chapman...) the subtitle "Simply The Best Songwriters" (same as the Australian release), printed on the reverse of the rear insert and visible through the transparent jewel case, is more appropriate.
Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

Some sources say this set was released after the famous issue of Rolling Stone with the "500 Best Songs Of All Time" (Dec 2005, USA; Jan 2006, Spain, see front above) because both items, the magazine and this set, have a similar cover. However, this set was actually released some years before.
