Audio: "The Dark Side of the Road" - Questionable Releases Of Official Dylan Albums
(title suggested by Sergio Mariano Romay)

Home ] Up ] [ Questionable Releases Of Official Dylan Albums ] Questionable Video Releases ]

This is a page of albums that look like official Dylan albums but are actually from sources other than Columbia or other record companies. For other Questionable releases, see here. For Questionable video releases, see here. Some of these entries are of items listed on eBay. Because of the very large number of Dylan fakes on eBay, I have now discontinued using eBay as a source.  For the official releases of these albums, see International Album Releases, except where noted.

These records were legal in Taiwan at the time of release, but were produced without authorisation from Columbia. They had very flimsy covers open on three sides, which had to be protected inside plastic to survive. This album is a copy of the 1966 Japanese CBS YS-611-C release, which is actually Bob's first album from 1962 with a new title (the first two volumes released by CBS in Japan had been compilations), and the tracks re-ordered. The record exists in several sleeve and label variants, and was originally released on red vinyl.

Taiwan, formerly Formosa, calls itself the "Republic of China", mainland China is the "People's Republic of China".

Thanks to Ulf Gyllenspetz for information and to Hans Seegers for further information and scans.

"Bob Dylan" - stereo vinyl LP, Tai Shen Records KT-3046 (Taiwan), 1970s:

Tai Shen Records KT-3046 (Taiwan) - Side 1 scan by Simon Blokker
This release of Bob's first album comes in a plain black sleeve with centre cut-outs to show the labels. Like the albums above, it was legal in Taiwan at the time of release, but was produced without authorisation from Columbia.

Thanks to Simon Blokker for information and scans.

"Bob Dylan" - CD release, Landy Star Music LS-3367 (Russia), 1990s:

Landy Star Music LS-3367 (Russia) - front scan by Keith Schweiger
This release, on the amusingly named Landy Star Music label, is almost certainly unauthorised, even though it does say "© 1961 by Bob Dylan" on the rear insert. The inside and reverse of the front insert have the original liner notes in English.

Thanks to Keith Schweiger for information and scans.

Picture from iTunes Germany showing a pirated version of Bob Dylan with extra tracks including R-0002, R-0003 and R-0004, screenshot by Dag Braathen

Thanks to Dag Braathen for the screenshot from iTunes Germany in Dec 2012 showing a unauthorised version of Bob Dylan with four extra tracks from Carolyn Hester's 1962 self-titled Columbia album, three of which have Bob on harmonica (Los Bibilicos is included but does not include Bob). See 1962 for the official Carolyn Hester album. See Online Recordings (Other) for releases of this album under different names on iTunes UK, Jan 2013.

"Bob Dylan Debut Album" - unauthorised CD releases, Various Record Labels (catalogue numbers?) (UK), 14 Jan 2013:

Hallmark 050457 126025 (UK) - picture from amazon.co.uk
Thanks to Bill Hester and Paul S. Levine for information about these EU releases of Bob's first album, presumably "legal" because of copyright expiry in the EU after fifty years. See Online Recordings (Other) for releases of this album under different names on iTunes UK, Jan 2013.

The Hoodoo Records release has twelve bonus tracks from other unreleased 1961-62 recordings. The CGH Ventures release is also available as an iTunes download, see below.

"Bob Dylan" - unauthorised downloads, iTunes (UK), Jan 2013:

Picture from iTunes UK
Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for information about these three releases, presumably "legal" because of copyright expiry in the EU after fifty years. The Debut Album (CGH Ventures Inc.) is Bob's album plus six live tracks, Seeds Of Greatness (Top Town Records) is just Bob's first album, House Of The Risin' Sun (White Station) consists of alternate tracks from Bob's first album and Joan Baez's first album, starting and finishing with the title track.

"Bob Dylan" - unauthorised 2CD stereo and mono release, Not Now Music NOT2CD480 (NL for Europe), Jan 2013:

Not Now Music NOT2CD480 (NL for Europe) - front of slipcase, picture from www.ginza.se
Thanks to Anders Lindh for information about this 2CD release, presumably "legal" because of copyright expiry in the EU after fifty years. As well as stereo and mono versions of the album, it includes two bonus tracks. According to Derek Barker of "Isis" magazine, Not Now Music informed him they were both sides of the original Mixed Up Confusion/Corrina, Corrina mono 7" single (R-0007 and R-0008, see 1962). However, this is completely wrong - Mixed Up Confusion is the alternate take from the original release of Biograph (R-0748, see 1985) and Corrina, Corrina is an unfaded version (2:53 instead of 2:44) of the version from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan with a final drum roll from drummer Herb Lovelle! This is a completely new rarity. There is also a 2LP vinyl release, but it does not include the two bonus tracks.

Not Now Music NOT2CD480 (NL for Europe) - rear insert (rear of slipcase is the same)

Not Now Music NOT2CD480 (NL for Europe) - reverse of rear insert

Not Now Music NOT2CD480 (NL for Europe) - CD1 (mono)

Not Now Music NOT2CD480 (NL for Europe) - CD2 (stereo) plus R-0748 and R-0937

Not Now Music NOT2CD480 (NL for Europe) - inside of unfolded front insert

R-0748-2 Mixed Up Confusion - stereo mix of the overdubbed alternate take of 1962 single A-side (2:22), from original release of Biograph, see 1985, recorded Columbia Recording Studios, New York, 1 Nov 1962 (take 10) and overdubbed with different backing, probably on 8 Dec 1964

R-0955    Corrina, Corrina (traditional) - extended version of mono track with band from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan with final drum roll (2:53 instead of 2:44), recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, 26 Oct 1962 (take 6)
Thanks to Anders Lindh, Peter Coulthard and Keith Venturoni for pointing out that R-0955 is exactly the same as the track from The Original Mono Recordings including fade out, then there are about eight second of silence followed by the final drum roll.
As this counts as a rarity, full details are in 2013.

Not Now Music
NOT2CD501 (NL for Europe) - front scan from Les Kokay
These two bonus tracks are also on the Not Now Music release Voices Of A Generation, another 2CD set which includes Bob's first album and Joan Baez's first album. Thanks to Chevy West for pointing out that the drum roll mentioned above also occurs at the end of the last track on the Baez CD so may be just something that Now Not Music add to the end of all their CDs.

Thanks to Anders Lindh, Roger Ford and Derek Barker for information and to Les Kokay for the scan. Special thanks to Anders for the album!

"House Of The Risin' Sun" - 2CD set, Movieplay Gold (catalogue number?) (UK), 11 Feb 2013; LP release: Vinyl Passion Direct Metal Master (catalogue number?) (UK), 11 Feb 2013:

Picture from amazon.co.uk (2CD release)
Thanks to Paul S. Levine for information about this 39 track 2CD release of Bob's first album plus other tracks from 1961-62, again presumably allowed because of copyright expiry in the EU after fifty years.

Thanks to James Hannigan for finding a 14 track LP from this set that has just Bob's first album plus his first single, Mixed Up Confusion (see 1962).

This unauthorised release on transparent red vinyl for Record Store Day 2014 included a "promo 7" stereo single" with Mixed Up Confusion/Corrina, Corrina. The single has catalogue number NOT7001 and comes in a plain white sleeve. For comments on these extra tracks see the Jan 2013 entry above.

"Bob Dylan And The New Folk Movement" - unauthorised CD release: Delta Music 26694 (UK), 7 Jan 2013; unauthorised 2LP stereo vinyl release: Delta Music N 79 001 (UK), 7 Jan 2013:

Delta Music 26694 (UK) - front picture from www.amazon.co.uk
This unofficial 25-track CD is being sold by www.amazon.co.uk at a budget price of £4.15 (€4.90). It is again legal because of copyright expiry in the EU after fifty years, and has Bob's first album as the first thirteen tracks plus a compilation of twelve tracks by Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Bob Gibson and Dave van Ronk. There is also a 2LP stereo vinyl version (not shown) with Bob's first album on the first disc and the bonus tracks on the second disc.

Thanks to John Willy Bakke, Bill Hester, Hans Seegers and Paul Shenton for information.

BDUSmonoFront.jpg (26594 bytes)
Columbia CL 1779 (USA), the very first Dylan mono album released - front with sticker, scan by Hans Seegers

Thanks to John Willy Bakke for information about this 2CD set from Jasmine Records in the UK, presumably legal because all the albums included are now out of copyright. CD1 contains Carolyn's first album, Scarlet Ribbons from 1957 on the Coral label, produced in her home state of Texas by Norman Petty, producer of Buddy Holly and the Crickets, together with Carolyn's 1961 self-titled album on Tradition Records, both in mono. CD2 contains Carolyn's second self-titled album on Columbia in 1962 with Bob on harmonica (see 1962) plus Bob's first album and what really is his first single, in mono, not as the entries immediately above. As the album is described as stereo/mono, I assume the albums on CD2 are in stereo. The main photo on the front of this 2CD set is from the UK CBS release of Carolyn's 1962 album, but I've also shown the US front for completeness.

Thanks to Thomas Fattoruso for information.

"Constructing The Legend" - unauthorised CD release, BDA Records BDACD 106 (UK), 5 Aug 2013:

BDA Records BDACD 106 (UK) - picture from amazon.co.uk
This public domain album is of interest because it has 26 tracks, pairing each of the 13 songs from Bob's first album, now out of copyright, with the original performance or, for the two Dylan originals, a song that inspired it. For example, You're No Good is paired with Jesse Fuller's version and See That My Grave Is Kept Clean is paired with Blind Lemon Jefferson's version. Talkin' New York is paired with John Greenway's Talking Subway and Song To Woody is paired with Woody Guthrie's 1913 Massacre (which uses the same tune).

Thanks to Paul S. Levine for information.

"Through It All Came... Dylan" - unauthorised download release with extra track, iTunes (UK), Nov 2013:

Picture from iTunes UK
This unauthorised release of Bob's first album includes Midnight Special by Harry Belafonte with Bob on harmonica as a bonus track (for releases of the original Belafonte RCA Victor album see 1962).

Thanks to Ian Woodward for information.

"Fire Within" - unauthorised MP3 album, Don't U Records (no catalogue number) (USA), 2 May 2014:

Various Artists - "I Was Young When I Left Home" - 2CD set, Influence Records (catalogue number?) (Europe), 3 Jun 2013:

Picture from amazon.fr
Thanks to John Willy Bakke for information about this 2CD set is Vol. 2 in the "Influence Collection".  Vol. 1 was Elvis Presley and Vol. 3 is Johnny Cash. It contains 24 tracks by Bob on CD1 with his first album and tracks from the Minnesota Tapes, plus 26 tracks by other artists on CD2 of songs which influenced Bob, either original versions of songs he's covered or songs that inspired Dylan compositions.

Thanks to John Willy Bakke for information about this 2CD set in a book-style folder. Pablo is an artist, a painter and cartoonist who publishes comic books on composers/artists accompanied by CDs.  He has previously published similar editions on Serge Gainsbourg and Mozart. This book includes two CDs with Bob's first and second albums plus bonus tracks.

CD1: Bob Dylan plus: Mixed Up Confusion; Introduction; Poor Lazarus; Mean Old Southern Railroad (last three tracks recorded at the Riverside Church, New York, 29 Jul 1961, for the WRVR radio programme "Saturday Of Folk Music").

CD2: The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan plus bonus tracks (see below)

The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963)

"The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" - stereo vinyl picture disc, Columbia KCS 8786 (Canada), 1980s?:

Columbia KCS 8786 (Canada) - front scan from an Internet record dealer
This interesting item is said to be a picture disc edition of the Columbia Canada release. However, as far as I know, no Dylan picture discs have ever been released by Columbia worldwide. These albums were made in Germany or Italy.

Thanks to Ed Ricardo for finding this item.

"The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" - CD release, Grammy (no catalogue number) (Russia), 1990s:

This release is probably pirated, since it has no record company name or catalogue number. There is a number "JPCD 2000532" in the centre of the CD itself. The front insert is a single card. The rear insert has a gramophone logo and an email address: "grammy@ranet.ru".

Thanks to Keith Schweiger for information and scans.

"The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" - fake test pressing, Columbia CL 1986 (mono) (USA), Dec 2011:

Record and sleeve photo from eBay
This at first convincing "test pressing" with the withdrawn tracks for auction on eBay from an Italian seller is actually a fake. The information sheet glued to the white card sleeve is nothing like a Columbia US information sheet of the time, and labels like these were not used for test pressings.

Thanks to Renaud Depierreux for information about this item, and to Jeff Gold of Record Mecca, Arie de Reus and Hans Seegers for confirming it's a fake.

CD2: The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan plus: Fixin' To Die (R-0901); Smokestack Lightning (R-0902); Hard Travellin' (R-0903); The Death Of Emmett Till (R-0904); Standing On The Highway (R-0905); Baby Please Don't Go (R-0908) (bonus tracks from the "Folksinger's Choice" radio programme hosted by Cynthia Gooding, WBAI-FM, New York, Jan or Mar 1962, released on the Pacifica Archives CD-R Bob Dylan And Cynthia Gooding, Mar 2011.

DDRClubFront.jpg (23190 bytes)
Amiga Phonoclub 8 40 040 (East Germany) - front scan by Hans Seegers

This mono album is claimed to be the rarest Bob Dylan album in the world, rarer even than the withdrawn first pressing of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (see 1963 and above)!

Amiga Phonoclub 8 40 040 (East Germany) - Side 1 scan by Hans Seegers

Amiga Phonoclub 8 40 040 (East Germany) - Side 2 scan by Hans Seegers

Its contents are actually the regular commercial release of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, with German "socialist" sleeve notes, released as a very limited edition by an East German record club, and printed at the Amiga pressing plant in East Berlin, under licence from CBS Records. The record has orange "Phonoclub" labels. The front photo is a 1965 shot by Jerry Schatzberg.

Thanks to Michel Pomarede for news that copies of this album in both red and black vinyl are being sold on eBay and other outlets. My information is that these are unofficial reproductions, so are not recommended unless you are keen to own such a copy for its novelty value.

Thanks to Hans Seegers and Michel Pomarede for information and scans.

The Times They Are A-Changin' (1964)

"The Times They Are A-Changin'" - stereo vinyl LP, CSJ Records CSJ-101 (Taiwan), Sep 1965 onwards:

CSJ Records CSJ-101 (Taiwan) - front scan by Hans Seegers (second release - for detail of first, see below)
These records were legal in Taiwan at the time of release, but were produced without authorisation from Columbia. They had very flimsy covers, which had to be protected inside plastic to survive. There are several front sleeve variations. The first has the Columbia STEREO "360° SOUND" logo in a box with arrows in the top left corner, subsequent releases have "STEREO" and arrows only. There can also be a single arrow on the right edge above Bob's shoulder, which can be clear or shaded yellow (not shown). For front sleeve details see below.

The first release of this album had the record on green vinyl, others were on black vinyl. There are at least four label variants with differing type faces and text sizes. Only on the first variant is the album title in English. On the third variant Bob's name is given as "BOD DYIAH"!

Matrix numbers for all releases are "XSM-75528/29-1E" (stamped), "J-101-A/B SM 111/1111" (written).

Jules Normington gives the release dates as: first variant - Sep 1965, second variant - Mar 1968, third variant - Nov 1969, fourth variant - Jul 1970. CSJ was a label based in Taichung, central Taiwan.

Thanks to Hans Seegers, Ulf Gyllenspetz and Jules Normington for information, scans and photos.

CBS YS-641-C (Japan) - front with obi, scan by Hans Seegers (official release)

This unauthorised release, with the exclusive anachronistic sleeve of the Jul 1966 CBS Japan release Bob Dylan!/Vol. 4, is the regular 1964 The Times They Are A-Changin' album! These albums have flimsy paper sleeves inside a clear plastic wallet. There are two sleeve and record label variants. "Bob Dylan" is mis-spelled as "Bob Oylan" on the first front sleeve with a yellow border, although not on the red record labels. The second copy has a corrected front sleeve with a green border and a record pressed in clear orange vinyl with yellow labels, again correct.

Columbia KCS 9128 (Canada)
- front scan from an Internet record dealer
This again is said to be a picture disc edition of the Columbia Canada release, shown here in a clear plastic sleeve. The second example is said to be Brazilian. However, as far as I know, no Dylan picture discs have ever been released by Columbia or CBS worldwide. These albums were made in Germany or Italy.

Thanks to Ed Ricardo for finding this item.

"Bringing It All Back Home" - mono CD release, Sony CD-116 (Hong Kong), 2001(?):

bringing_itchina2.jpg (44904 bytes)
Sony CD-116 (Hong Kong) - front of unfolded insert, scan by Anthony Perry

This Hong Kong edition, which claims to be digitally mastered, is in a CD single jewel case, with a folded insert. The insert says confusingly "Produced by John Hammond" and also "Produced by Tom Wilon" (Tom Wilson was the actual producer.) It's unlikely it's a genuine Sony release.

Thanks to Anthony Perry for information and scans. Also thanks to Roger Ford for the information that the mono mix on this CD is not true mono, but a mono reduction from a stereo source, and to Hans Seegers for the information that it is from Hong Kong, not mainland China as first listed. Also see CD-183 below.

Thanks to Sergio Mariano Romay for information about this release of Columbia CL 2389 with a red vinyl disc. Sadly, it is not a genuine Columbia US release. Augie Krater thinks these eBay albums are bootlegs from the 2010 mono remasters.

Thanks to Jacques Colinet for information about this release of Highway 61 Revisited (Deluxe Version) on iTunes France with the released album and seven alternate takes (see screenshot). Thanks to Bob Meyer for noticing that all the alternate tracks are in fact officially released on albums of The Bootleg Series, but as Bob does not want his classic albums to be released with bonus tracks, I think this iTunes compilation is unofficial.

This is the first record of Blonde On Blonde and these are pirate copies of the 1966 Japanese CBS album Rainy Day Women 12 & 35: Bob Dylan/Vol. 5 (see International Album Releases). The sleeves are made of very flimsy paper. "Bob Dylan" is mis-spelled as "Bob Oylan" on the first front sleeve, although not on the red record labels. Jeff Hunt's copy has a pink front sleeve without the spelling mistake. The second record is made of orange vinyl with blue labels. There was no Columbia pressing plant in Taiwan at that time.

For Bob Dylan!/Vol. 1, First Records FL 1328, actually The Times They Are A-Changin', see above.

Thanks to Raoul Verolleman and Jeff Hunt for information and scans.

"Blonde On Blonde" - mono CD release, Columbia C2L 41/LP 5110 (USA), 2005:

Millennium Masters Collection - front insert of pirate release, scan by Joe Boden

Thanks to Joe Boden for pictures of a 2005 CD release which purports to be one of a series called "The Millennium Masters Collection". This looks official, but actually isn't. It has the Columbia mono catalogue number "C2L 41" on the CD itself, and also the catalogue number "LP 5110" on the front insert - my guess therefore is that it is a very convincing pirate CD copy of the official 2002 Sundazed mono 2LP release.

Several people have also emailed me and provided pictures of what purports to be a CD promo in a digipak of the mono version of Blonde On Blonde released in Germany, being sold on a Japanese online auction site. The digipak uses the artwork of the Dutch Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits and Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits 2 releases, see International Albums (Dylan-Only Compilations) 1960s. Roger Ford tells me it's also been described on eBay as being from Sweden. This item has the CBS logo on the digipak and the CD itself, with a catalogue number of M 66012 (the same number as the UK mono release). However, it's not a genuine CBS release, but a pirate copy of what sounds like "a very worn copy of the US mono mix" according to Roger. It's shown here for information purposes only.

Thanks to Senne Willems for photos.

"Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits 2" - stereo compilation cassette, IMD-7470 (Saudi Arabia), late 1970s:

IMD-7470 (Saudi Arabia) - outside of cassette insert (my copy - reverse is blank)
This Saudi Arabian cassette release of the 1966 Dutch compilation is probably unauthorised. Absolutely Sweet Marie is misspelled as "Mary" on both the cassette insert (twice) and the Side 2 label, as on the official release.

For the official release, see International Album Releases (Dylan-Only Compilations) 1960s.

For an IMD release of Bob Dylan At Budokan Vol. 2, see below. As that is IMD-6395, and this is IMD-7470, this must be from 1978 or later.

Takt Music 1636 (Poland) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Janusz Weselski
This unofficial Polish cassette uses the UK front image but has the ten-song US track list, albeit reordered. It comes from a label which used to release pirated tapes in Poland, starting from 1990 as "Tact". In 1991 they changed their name to "Takt Music". The money earned from those releases helped to open a major pressing plant (CDs, DVDs & tapes), also named "Takt", but with a slightly different logo.

This set also appears as World Record SLW-1778/79 with the false claim that Jimi Hendrix plays guitar on the album! It has a completely different sleeve design, not actually a sleeve but two sheets of flimsy paper inside a plastic sleeve. Sprint Records 67239 (Turkey) - front scan by Michel Pomarede
From the late 1980s to the mid-1990s a lot of Dylan records were officially released in Turkey in tape format. But only three Dylan vinyl LP records were genuine: Planet Waves, Before The Flood (both made by Melodi Plak for Warner Bros under licence from Warner Bros Germany) and Desire, made by Plaksan for CBS. Some other records were released in Turkey in the late 1970s but they are not official releases: Slow Train Coming made by Max, and More Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits as a single album, made by Sprint (an Italian company with branches in Turkey and Spain, specialising in Italian artists, and in legal but not official records of international artists).

"Bob Dylan en España" by Francisco García which mentions this release

"Historia iconográfica" by Fernando Montañés and Mikel Barsa which omits this release

Lars M. Banke has a copy of CBS S 69042 in an unauthorised sleeve that was given away to promote the Spanish Caroche brand of denim jeans. Because it was not official, full details are given here. Manuel García Jara has a copy in the same sleeve but where the record labels have the new catalogue number of CBS S 32098. The album is mentioned in Francisco García's "Bob Dylan en España: Mapas de carretera para el alma [Bob Dylan in Spain: Road Maps for the Soul]" book (Editorial Milenio, Lleida 2000) p. 197. “This is a very rare disc, since this is a disc used to promote the brand of denim CAROCHE. The front sleeve is maroon in colour, similar to the inner sleeve of Blood On The Tracks, and with the CAROCHE logo in the centre. The rear sleeve is white and has on the left side the credits that appeared in the original edition, but incomplete. The block of artistic credits with the dedication to Sam Peckinpah has disappeared, as well as the two blocks belonging to the credits of the film. In the centre of the rear sleeve there is a advertising text that relates the authenticity of the folk music and country of the disc with the pure essence of the Far West of the CAROCHE cowboy pants. In no place on the sleeve is it mentioned that this is a disc of Bob Dylan. The disc has no details different from the usual release.

However, Manuel García Jara is sceptical about its status. He divides advertising-related releases into two categories:

"Official records. Authorised, made and printed directly by their respective record companies. The sleeves and/or labels were modified to show logos and slogans of the commercial companies. Those records are very collectable and some of them are very expensive. All those records, without exceptions, can be found in the excellent book "Historia iconográfica de la música en la publicidad" ("Iconographic History of Music in Publicity") by Fernando Montañés and Mikel Barsa (published by Fundación Autor, part of SGAE, 2006). Mikel Barsa is the biggest record dealer in Spain and the organizer of most important International Record Fairs here and in South America.

Unofficial records. Most of the time, owners of commercial companies bought genuine vinyl records from a record dealer and they designed and printed their own sleeves. Those "editions" were not authorised by record companies. The "Caroche Edition" of Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid is well-known to Spanish Dylan collectors and even by collectors from other countries. It is an expensive album, too much expensive for an unofficial record! Caroche, based in Valencia, was a company  that specialised in jeans clothes. In 1984 this company thought to give a record to their young customers and Pat Garrett was the best option, for the following reasons:

They bought a few hundred copies of the vinyl (both CBS S 69042 and CBS S 32098, with orange/yellow labels) and they designed a sleeve (the front has the Caroche logo over a dark background, similar to jeans clothes; the rear is white with the panel of tracklist and musician credits, but the credits of the movie are missing; there is also a text advertising the link between "good country music-good western movie-better blue jeans"). This unofficial release was not authorised by CBS and doesn't appear in the book of Fernando Montañés/Mikel Barsa. If this book had been published by a different company, the "Caroche Edtion" would have been included as in the book "Bob Dylan en España: Mapas de carreteras para el alma", because it is well known in Spain (if not infamous) and very collectable. However, "Historia iconográfica de la música en la publicidad" was published by Fundación Autor, part of SGAE, the Spanish copyright organisation and obviously an unofficial record, not authorised by the record company, couldn't be included in a book published by the SGAE.

1965-LikeARollingStone.jpg (26248 bytes)
CBS EP 6107 (Spain) - front scan by Hans Seegers
In 1967, a company of Barcelona, Camisas Dalí (Dalí Shirts) bought EPs in stock from Discophon and they were given away to their customers: one of those records was the Spanish EP Like A Rolling Stone with a sleeve printed by Camisas Dalí, not the official sleeve. In 2004, when CBS/Sony no longer released vinyl records in Spain, a friend of mine, owner of a record shop in Salamanca, bought some hundred records without sleeves of different titles from a dealer: he received 200 copies of Desire with the CBS/Sony logo and he designed and printed its own sleeve: it was black; the front has the record-shop logo (Caronte Records) and the rear has artist, album title and the tracklist. All those copies were given away to customers and friends. Like the "Dalí Edition" of Like A Rolling Stone or the "Caronte Edition" of Desire, this "Caroche Edition" of Pat Garrett has no value to those who only collect official records."

"Blood On The Tracks" - cassette release, IBM Records 8579 (Egypt), 1980s:

IBM Records 8579 (Egypt) - cassette insert scan by Jason Draper
This cassette release was legal in Egypt, but not in the West. It contains Maggie's Farm and One Too Many Mornings, the first two tracks from Hard Rain, at the end of Side 1 and Side 2 respectively. Jason Draper's contact in Egypt says:

"None of Dylan's records were pressed on vinyl here because CBS/Columbia were blacklisted in all of the Middle East! This tape would be considered as an illegal or pirate release in the West, but here it's a normal thing, because there was NO control on copyrights. When cassettes surfaced a lot in the early 1970s, 100s of unknown local labels stormed the market with cheap prices and medium quality tapes. This Bob Dylan tape is an early 1980s release is a medium quality Asian product on the "IBM" label. The Hard Rain tracks were added on at the end of the sides to make up the space."

CBS 86003 (Israel) - fake promo sleeve front, scan by Patrick Helfrich
This apparent promo album with the UK catalogue number has a unique monochrome sleeve with text in Hebrew on the front promoting the track Hurricane. On the rear sleeve are illustrated four earlier Dylan albums, with more text in Hebrew. The record has orange 1960s-style CBS labels. In fact the record is genuine but the sleeve is a fake, produced in Germany in the 1990s. Promo copies issued by CBS in Israel were just the regular albums with promo stickers. See International Album Releases for examples of promo copies with stickers of Bob Dylan and Another Side Of Bob Dylan. This sleeve has been confirmed as a fake to Israeli collectors by CBS in Tel Aviv.

Street-Legal (1978)

"Street-Legal" - stereo compact cassette release, Sonny's Tape Gallery (no catalogue number) (Iran), 1978:

Front of cassette insert, photo by William Henry Prince
This unofficial tape copy from Sonny's Tape Gallery, Tehran, Iran, also contains Romance In Durango and Mozambique from Desire on Side 2. It almost certainly dates from before the Iranian Revolution in 1979. The front picture reproduces the original Dutch album cover complete with blue and white sticker!

Thanks to William Henry Prince for information and photos.

Footprint S 472-A (Saudi Arabia) - front photo from Michael Bällstav
This cassette release is almost certainly unauthorised. The country of origin is not identified, although it actually comes from Saudi Arabia. The record company is Footprint although the name is also not identified, with just a logo of two bare feet!

Thanks to Michael Bällstav for information.

Bob Dylan At Budokan (1978)

GMI 2790 (Singapore) - front of cassette insert, scan by Manuel García Jara
These unauthorised cassette releases contain the second part (Record 2) of the 1978 live album. Vol. 1 cassettes must also exist. Both cassettes use essentially the same front design. The poorly made IMD tape has no leader at either end, so the beginnings and endings of both sides are clipped.

For an IMD release of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits 2, see above.

SlowTrainRussFront.jpg (28456 bytes)
Anfon C90 31847/П91 0007 (Russia) - front scan by Hans Seegers (1991 release)
АнТроп (Anfon or Antrop) was a record company run by Andrei Tropillo. This album is the only Dylan vinyl LP release in Russia, and the front sleeve was redrawn for some reason - perhaps to make the pickaxe look less like a cross.

Man Gave Names To All The Animals is omitted, so the album has four tracks per side. Thanks to Ronald Born for pointing out that Precious Angel and Do Right To Me Baby are also reversed.

The 1991 album was released with three different labels, all shown above. The third one has the flags of the new Russian republic, which came into existence in 1991. Herman Lubenski of Belarus tells me these labels actually denoted vinyl quality, the red was best, white/brown was worst, and the white/blue was medium quality, but see the comments from Manuel García Jara below. The 1993 album belonging to Lars M. Banke has a fourth label variant in white, and the Side 1 label has the text "Riga, 1993" showing it was made in Latvia.

Thanks to Hans Seegers and Lars M. Banke for information and scans.

This unofficial cassette release contains the eight tracks from Knocked Out Loaded plus four tracks from Empire Burlesque and Band Of The Hand from the 1986 MCA film soundtrack album (R-0182, see 1986). It comes in a plastic wallet of the kind used then for cassette computer games and the cassette is actually a blank from Maxell.

Band Of The Hand: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [Various Artists] (1986)

Various Artists - "Band Of The Hand: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" - Regular and Special Edition CDs, no label or catalogue number (Sweden), 2004:

"Regular Edition" - front scan by Jean-Pol Hiernaux
Band Of The Hand -  with The Heartbreakers, produced by Tom Petty, lyrics on bobdylan.com here
For the original MCA release of the soundtrack album and singles, R-0182, see 1986.

This CD edition was produced by a "Soundtrack Fanclub" in Scandinavia. There are two versions - one is a 10-track "professional" CD-R and was sold in the USA and Canada as an "import from Europe". It has no date, label or catalogue number. It has a black CD tray and the front insert is a single card. The second is a "Special Edition" with what looks like a black CD-R and is released by "Torn Within Soundtracks Inc.". This release has seven bonus tracks, it comes in a clear CD tray, and the front insert is a folded card. Jean-Pol Hiernaux says the quality of the Dylan track on both of these is much better than on vinyl releases and does not appear to be pirated from an LP.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for initial information and to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for further information and scans.

Traveling Wilburys Volume One [Traveling Wilburys](1989)

Traveling Wilburys -  "Traveling Wilburys Volume One" - vinyl LP releases, АнТроп П91 00223/Anfon P91 00223 (Russia), 1991:

Anfon P91 00223 (Russia) - front scan by Alex Ivanov (variant 1)
These very collectable records with a unique sleeve are unofficial, so are listed here. АнТроп (Anfon or Antrop) was a record company run by Andrei Tropillo. The first two record labels have the flags of the new Russian republic, which came into existence in 1991.

The sleeve and the record labels are dated 1991, but Alex Ivanov says it was not in fact released until 1993. As can be seen there are several rear sleeve variations, brown, grey and dark grey. Manuel García Jara has a copy with alternate record labels, bought in Lithuania. These labels do not have the Russian flag. Manuel says the records with the labels without the Russian flag were sold in former republics of the Soviet Union such as the Baltic States, and the Russian flag was removed for political reasons. This copy has a dark grey rear sleeve.

MTV Unplugged (1995)

"MTV Unplugged" - faked promo 2LP set, Columbia C2 67000 (USA), 1995:

Columbia C2 67000 (USA) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (faked "promo" release)

Gerd Rundel has a "promo" 2LP set from eBay which is definitely faked. The front sticker is actually printed on, the small text on the rear sleeve is blurred, the labels look hand printed and are badly glued on. The matrix number on all four record labels to the left of the centre hole is "BL 67099" - it should be "AL 67099", "BL ...", "CL ...", etc. Arie de Reus bought one at a record fair and also says it is definitely a fake.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel and Arie de Reus for information and scans.

Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for finding this copy on eBay with the records in transparent blue vinyl. It is almost certainly unauthorised by Columbia. Thanks to Wiebke for finding copies on eBay with "old gold" mottled vinyl and green vinyl. Again these are fakes.

The Bootleg Series Vol. 4 - Live 1966: The "Royal Albert Hall Concert" (1998)

"Guitars Kissing & The Contemporary Fix" - 2CD set, Scorpio 51766A/E (Europe), 1996:

Scorpio 51766A/E (Europe) - front (my copy)
17 May 2016 is the 50th anniversary of the infamous "Judas!" concert by Bob Dylan and The Hawks at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester, for many years available on bootleg albums as "The Royal Albert Hall" concert, apparently because the master tapes were mistakenly labelled. In the mid-1990s this concert appeared as a bootleg 2CD set called Guitars Kissing & The Contemporary Fix (a chapter heading from "Tarantula"), supposedly copied from a DAT master tape smuggled out by a Columbia employee enraged because Bob rejected the album for release on the grounds it was "too clean". Some still prefer this version to the official The Bootleg Series Vol. 4 - Live 1966: The "Royal Albert Hall" Concert release on right, belatedly released on 12 Oct 1998.

One track from this abandoned master, I Don't Believe You, was released in error on the recalled release of Biograph, see 1997. It's All Over Now, Baby Blue from this show was released on Biograph in 1985, so appears here and on The Bootleg Series Vol. 4 - Bob Dylan Live 1966: The "Royal Albert Hall" Concert in remastered form.

Columbia SONYTV28CD (UK) - rear insert (my copy - shown for comparison)

CD scan by Jean-Pol Hiernaux

This release was found by Jean-Pol Hiernaux in Belgium, but was actually manufactured in Russia. The front insert is only a single folded card, not a booklet, with plain white on the reverse. The CD tray is black, not clear - the reverse of the rear insert is also blank. There is no catalogue number, no record company name on the inserts, and no barcode. The CD itself looks more official, although "Entertainment" is spelled "Entertaiment". On the rear insert Blowin' In The Wind is given as "Blowin' The Wind" while Jokerman is spelled "Jockerman" - Bob's photo is also much darker. As can also be seen, the text on the inserts is slightly compressed.

For the official releases of this album, see 1997.

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for information and scans and to Hans Seegers for further information.

CD-R found by Gerd Rundel
This "mega rare" promo CD-R purporting to be from Colombia is almost certainly a fake, so is listed here.

Modern Times is from 2006, yet this is dated 2002! Sony & BMG did not merge until 2004, two years after this date. ABKCO records are distributed by Universal, and Bob has never had links to that company.

This "mega rare" promo CD-R purporting to be from Argentina is almost certainly a fake, so is listed here.

This is dated 2005 and the album is from 2010, by which time Sony BMG had become Sony Music with a new logo.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding this on eBay.

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for scans of a 4CD set, purporting to be from Sony Music Poland, I have now determined this is not an official release. It comes in a double-width jewel case with clear CD trays plus an eight page booklet. The 4 CDs aren't CD-Rs and have matrix numbers 99701-1, 99701-2, 99701-3 and 99701-4. Jean-Pol says the sound is very good - the CDs don't sound as if they are copies from the 6LP vinyl boxed set, there isn't vinyl noise. The official 6LP set is listed in 2013.

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for information and scans.

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for information and scans.

Shadows In The Night (2015)

"Shadows In The Night" - promo CD-R release, "Columbia" (no catalogue number) (Country?), Feb 2015:

Picture from eBay
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding this promo CD-R on eBay. I have confirmation from a Sony Music source that this CD-R has not been produced by any European Sony Music subsidiary, and is almost certainly "home made"!

Fallen Angels (2016)

"Fallen Angels" - unofficial CD release, (no record company/no catalogue number) (Nepal), 2016:

Front scan by Ronald Born
This copy was bought in Kathmandu, Nepal, in Dec 2016 and looks "home-made"! It was however sealed when bought.
