This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

CD Releases

"Self Portrait" - CD releases, Columbia CGK 30050 (USA/Canada), 1990s:

Columbia CGK 30050 (USA) - front of "long box", scan by Hans Seegers

These releases have both LPs on a single CD. The front insert is a single folded card reproducing the artwork of the double LP gatefold sleeve, but with the inner pictures in black and white. The US/Canadian releases have no text on the front of the front insert, whereas the first European release (see below) covers the original front artwork with text. The first CD release of the album in the USA came in the "long box" shown.

The early 1990s Canadian copy shown from Jack from Canada has been signed by Bob on the front of the front insert. Jack obtained the autograph personally, so knows it is genuine!

Thanks to Jack from Canada and Hans Seegers for information and scans.

"Self Portrait" - CD releases, Columbia 460112 2 (Europe), 1990s (two releases); Columbia 471621 2 (Europe), 1990s:

Columbia 460112 2 (Europe) - front of jewel case with UK "Nice Price" sticker, scan by Kenneth Robson (first and third variants)
The US release above has no text on the front of the front insert, whereas the first European release bought by Kenneth Robson in the UK covers the original front artwork with text. The second European release bought by Harald Schuster in Austria uses the US design for the outside and inside of the front insert. The third European release owned by Jim Siddy has the same front insert as Kenneth's first release copy. All three European CD releases have exactly the same rear insert. The title on all three European CDs is misspelled as "SELFPORTRAIT" (one word).

As can be seen, the first two European CDs themselves are identical apart from the centre markings. The first European CD has "CDCBS 467077" in the centre plus "MASTERED BY DADC AUSTRIA", the second European CD has a completely different centre. The third European CD again has "CDCBS 467077" in the centre but it does not have "MASTERED BY DADC AUSTRIA". This CD is unusual in that it has a new later catalogue number "471621 2" although the inserts still have "460112 2". It also has extra text to the right of the CD centre below the red panel and the song titles are listed differently, with extra text below them.

"Self Portrait" - CD release, Sony Records SRCS 6160 (Japan), 1 Dec 1991:

Sony Records SRCS 6160 (Japan) - front with obi, scan by Wil Gielen

This later mid-priced CD is as far as I know the only CD release of this album in Japan. It has a black, red, white, blue and yellow obi in the "NICE PRICE LINE 15" series with price ¥1,800 (¥1,748 plus sales tax) and date "91-12-1". There is a folded front insert and a second insert which opens out (not shown). The CD is green with silver text.

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and Wil Gielen for scans.

Columbia 190759045527 (Australia), 18 Oct 2018:

Columbia 190759045527 (Australia) - front with sticker, scan by Stuart Moore (2018 release)
This "Gold Series" single CD was released on 19 Oct 2018. The bar code is now different. The new bar code number "190759045527" is on the spine in place of "4601122". The CD itself looks similar to the second release above, with "Columbia" and still with catalogue number ""460112 2". The colour is a slightly darker red than that of the previous release, and the disc is now gold instead of silver. It is one of 12 Dylan releases in the "Gold Series".

"Self Portrait" - single CD release, Columbia 460112 2/471621 2 (Europe), 1992:

Columbia 471621 2 (Europe) - front of box scan by Stuart Moore
This 1992 European CD release came in a 3CD boxed set with John Wesley Harding and Self Portrait. The CDs were all made in Austria. This release has the same catalogue number of 460112 2 as the Australian release above on the inserts, but the CD itself has the boxed set number of 471621 2.

Details are also in International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 1990s.

"The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971)" - limited deluxe edition 4CD release, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883 73488 2 (USA/Europe), 27 Aug 2013:

Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883 73488 2 (USA/Europe) - front of slipcase with sticker (my copy)
The 4CD limited deluxe edition of this 2013 set includes a remastered copy of the original Self Portrait. It was originally reported that the remastered Self Portrait would be resequenced with the originally proposed running order, so that it wouldn't start with All The Tired Horses, for example, but this has not happened.

Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883 73488 2-4 (Europe) - CD4 scan by Gerd Rundel

The album was remastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound, Edgewater, NJ. Both Peter Coulthard and Éamonn Ó Catháin have found that on the remastered release there is a very annoying glitch which occurs between 47 and 48 seconds into Copper Kettle. The error on their copies seems to be a "skip" of maybe half a second at the point where Bob sings "...jugs a-filling...". From Peter's correspondence with Sterling Sound it appears the glitch is present on all copies of the remastered album. All copies of the deluxe limited edition with Self Portrait had completely sold out before mid Sep 2013. In mid Oct 2013 Sony Music announced they were sending new copies of Another Self Portrait (1969-1971): The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 [Box set, Deluxe Edition] with a replacement CD 4 that doesn't contain the defect on Copper Kettle, and these have now arrived.

Thanks to Peter Coulthard and Éamonn Ó Catháin for information and to Gerd Rundel for scans.

"The Complete Album Collection Vol. One" - 47CD boxed set, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88691-92431-2 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe), 4 Nov 2013; USB stick, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883-77314-5 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe), 4 Nov 2013; Sony Music SICP 30471-30520 (Japan), 26 Mar 2014 onwards:

Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88691-92431-2 (USA/Europe) - front of CD box (my copy)

This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set of previously released non-album tracks entitled Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album, see 1973, and the extra 2CD set Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George Jackson (Acoustic version), R-0085, see 1971. The set is therefore listed in 2013. The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and previously unseen photos.

Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88691924312JK10 (USA)/Europe) - detail of outside of unfolded card sleeve

All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown. The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK10" plus "DISC 11". Self Portrait comes as a single CD, in a folded card sleeve reproducing the original gatefold sleeve, with the disc pocket on the inside right with the opening in the centre. The content is the remastered version as on CD4 of the Deluxe Edition of Another Self Portrait (1969-1971): The Bootleg Series Vol. 10, see above, reportedly without the glitch on Copper Kettle, so this can be counted as the first remastered album of this set. The CDs are different in detail, the US Self Portrait CD has catalogue number "88691924312D11", whereas the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-11". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria). The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs, and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I haven't shown them for the later CDs.

For more details of the set, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.

Sony Music SICP 30482/30483 (Japan) - picture from www.cdjapan.co.jp
Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson and Éamonn Ó Catháin for news that The Complete Album Collection will be released in Japan in four decade-related parts, with the intention to release them all in 2014. The Blu-Spec CD2 specification CDs come in card sleeves with printed inner sleeves and "SONY MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA" on the discs. Bob's 1970s albums from Self Portrait to Slow Train Coming will be released in Japan on 23 Apr 2014 in card sleeves as Blu-Spec CD2 discs numbered Sony Music SICP 30482 to SICP 30500. The 2013 remastered Self Portrait will be SICP 30482/30483, more details will be added when available.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.
