Empire Burlesque (1985)
|
This page is part of a list of original releases by release
date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums.
They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the
Searching For A Gem
list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing
here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo
releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former
yearly Promo sections.
This page is still incomplete - more international releases of this set
required.

Original US stereo 5LP boxed set, Columbia C5X 38830, 7 Nov 1985 (also available
as 3 cassettes, CXT 38830). The CD edition, Columbia C3K 38830, was released in
Jan 1986.
The
front centre picture is a 1965 photograph by Daniel Kramer. The liner notes and
rare photographs come from film director Cameron Crowe, who interviews Bob about
each of the tracks.
Thanks to "Betsy" for the poster scan - it has the text "C38830
(C) 1985 CBS Inc." and was given away with promotional copies of the US boxed
set. Thanks also to Hans Seegers for information.

Mixed Up Confusion over "Mixed Up Confusion": This original boxed set
contains an
overdubbed alternate take of Mixed Up Confusion that was replaced on the
1997 CD release by R-0888, a stereo mix of the original single,
R-0007 (see 1962).
The alternate take was given a
rarity number
R-0748. The 1985 releases are therefore also listed in 1985.
A remastered CD release was released with mistakes in Aug 1997 and corrected in
Oct 1997. The Aug 1997 recalled edition is therefore also listed in 1997.
Because the latest releases of Biograph now contain the
alternate take of Mixed Up Confusion from 1985, R-0888, the stereo mix of the
original single is now a rarity, also see 1997!
This means that R-0748 is no longer a rarity, but I am leaving it with this
number in case the situation changes again.
Thanks to
Éamonn Ó Catháin for pointing
out that the tracks from Bob's first album have the exaggerated stereo mix used
on the first
Mixed Up Confusion over "The Groom's Still Waiting At The Altar": The Biograph
liner notes say that this song had up till then only been released as a single,
although I now have evidence that it had already been added to revised vinyl and
cassette versions of Shot of Love in the USA only. This means that
several online and book references sources say that this song was not added to
Shot of Love until after Biograph was released in Nov 1985, but I
believe this to be wrong. See the Shot of Love album page for the
detailed argument. All CD versions of Shot Of Love were released after
Biograph, and contain the song.
Mixed Up Confusion over "Heart Of Mine": The Biograph
liner notes say that this is a live performance from "8/81". In fact Bob did not
perform anywhere in Aug 1981.
It was actually recorded during the show at
the Saenger Performing Arts Center, New Orleans, LA, 10 Nov 1981. Also recorded
at this show were:
R-0205 Dead Man, Dead Man - recorded live from Saenger
Performing Arts Center, New
Orleans, LA, 10 Nov 1981, B-side of Everything Is Broken Columbia single (see
1989). Later
released on the 1993 Japanese promo CD Mr.
D's Collection # 3 (see 1993),
and now also available on the 2001 Japanese live compilation Bob
Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances
(see 2001)
Thief On The Cross
- recorded live from Saenger
Performing Arts Center,
New Orleans, LA, 10 Nov 1981, from CD3 of the 8CD+DVD set
The Bootleg Series Vol. 13 - Trouble No More 1979-1981 (Deluxe
Edition), Nov 2017
Positively 4th Street: The stereo version of Positively 4th Street included here is the one from the
original stereo Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits 1967 compilation and is timed
at 3:52. The version on the latest remastered releases of Bob Dylan's
Greatest Hits, including the 2012 Steve Hoffman release from Audio Fidelity,
is timed at 4:12, and is a former rarity (R-0049, see
Released Rarities).
Percy's Song: An alternate take of Percy's Song, take 1
(7:11), recorded Columbia Studios, New York, 23 Oct 1963, has been released in
Dec 2013 on 50th Anniversary
Collection 1963, a very limited edition 6LP boxed set,
see 2013. The Biograph notes,
Michael Krogsgaard and Glen Dundas list this take as the version on Biograph, 1985, but
if the 2013 release is right, it cannot be! The only other complete take was recorded at Columbia Studios,
New York, 24 Oct 1963 (take 3, 7:43), so that must be the Biograph
version. Thanks to Bob Stacy for reminding me that this was the conclusion of
Clinton Heylin, who thought that the Biograph version is much more
polished than the alternate take, and must date from the second day.
Isis: The live version of Isis with the Rolling
Thunder Revue (5:19) on Side 7 (CD2 of the 3CD set) comes The Forum, Montreal,
Canada, 4 Dec 1975, and was originally released on the 12" promo EP 4
Songs From "Renaldo And Clara" (see
1978) and as the B-side of
the Jokerman singles (see
1984). This release means it ceased to
become a rarity. Romance In Durango on Side 9 (CD3 of the 3CD set) is also from
Montreal.

Vinyl and Tape Releases
"Biograph" - 12" boxed set edition, 5LP set -
Columbia C5X 38830 (USA), Nov 1985:
This release now contains a rarity, so is also included in 1985.
Columbia C5X 38830 (USA) - LP box front with sticker, scan by Gerd Rundel
(variant 1) |
This set was first released in a 12" box on 5 LPs or 3 cassettes - each LP was in a
picture sleeve with song notes for each side. As well as a full colour 12"
36-page booklet, in the cassette edition and in the slightly later CD
edition the picture LP sleeves were included as a second 12" booklet (see
below).
The colour tints of the two boxes shown are
different - on the first box (variant 1) Bob's face has an orange tint, but
on the second box (variant 2), Bob's face has a more reddish tint.

three copies with
two different rear designs of the bottom credits. The
first copy (variant 1) is still sealed - the records of the second copy
(variant 2) have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL
38831-1C, Side 2 - BL 38831-1C, Side 3 - AL 38832-1C, Side 4 - BL 38832-1C,

38834-1A, Side 9 - AL 38835-1C, Side 10 - BL 38835-1B. Each side has
“STERLING” also stamped in the vinyl showing the set was mastered at Sterling Sound,
Edgewater, NJ. The third copy shown, a sealed copy of variant 2, has two front
stickers.
Thanks to Hans Seegers, Gerd Rundel, Patrick Helfrich and Jeremy Mayle for information and
scans.

Thanks to Magnus Peterson Olson for the scan of the sticker from the US
cassette box, which is noticeably different from the US LP box sticker above.
The three cassettes are in a black plastic tray. There are two booklets,
same as the European release below - the second stapled 12" booklet has
images of the record inner sleeves. The cassettes are light grey with
black text, there are no paper labels, unlike the European cassettes.
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for information and scans.

"Biograph" - 12" boxed set edition, 5LP set - CBS 66509 (Europe), Nov 1985,
re-released late 1980s:
This release now contains a rarity, so is also included in 1985.

The LP sleeves are all shown below for the Australian 5LP release along with
all ten record labels. The 5LP and 3 cassette releases sold in the UK were
sourced from Holland. The records in the Dutch 5LP set are in plain sleeves and
the box includes the second 12" booklet instead. The records now have red
CBS labels, the first Dylan European release to have these from new.
Thanks to David Burgess for the scan of the original sticker advertising 53
songs on 5 albums - mine is long gone! Thanks also to Renaud
Depierreux for finding the promo LP boxed set from the UK on eBay.

The
records of Gerd Rundel's copy have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 -
01-66509-2A-1, Side 2 - 01-66509-1B-1, Side 3 - 01-66509-1C-1, Side 4 - 01-66509-2D-1, Side 5 - 01-66509-1E-1, Side 6 - 01-66509-2F-1, Side 7 -
01-66509-2G-1, Side 8 - 01-66509-2H-1, Side 9 - 01-66509-2I-1, Side 10 -
01-66509-2J-1.
Hilda Fernhout has a
copy where the records have both European stamped matrix numbers and US
handwritten matrix numbers. My guess is that the discs in this European copy of
Biograph were imported from the USA, which is why they have the
handwritten US "38831" to "38835" matrix numbers. The European stamped matrix
numbers are the same as Gerd's, but the US handwritten matrix numbers are:
Side 1 : AL-38831-2AA, Side 2 : BL-38831-2AB,
Side 3 : AL-38832-1AB, Side 4 : BL-38832-1AB, Side 5 : AL-38833-1AA,
Side 6 : BL-38833-1AB, Side 7 : AL-38834-1AA, Side 8 : BL-38834-1AA,
Side 9 : AL-38835-1AB, Side 10
- BL-38835-1AB. These records must be from a later pressing than the US
copy listed.
David Burgess' copy also has both stamped and
handwritten matrix numbers as follows: Side 1 - 01-65509-2A-1 (stamped) AL38831-2AB
(handwritten), Side 2 - 01-66509-1B-1 (stamped) AL38831-2AA
(handwritten), Side 3 - 01-66509-2C-1 (stamped) AL38832-1AA
(handwritten), Side 4 - 01-66509 -2D-1 (stamped) BL-38852-1AA
(handwritten), Side 5 - 01-66509-1E-1 (stamped) AL-38833-1AA
(handwritten), Side 6 - 01-66509-2F-1 (stamped) BL-38833-1AA
(handwritten), Side 7 - 01-66509-2G-1 (stamped) AL-38834 -1AA
(handwritten), Side 8 - 01-66509-2I-1 (stamped) BL-38834-1AA
(handwritten), Side 9 - 01-66509-2I-1 (stamped) AL-38835-1AA
(handwritten), Side 10 - 01-66509-1J-1 (stamped) BL-38835-1AA
(handwritten).

"Biograph" - 12" boxed set edition, 3 cassette set - CBS 40-66509 (Europe), Nov 1985:

The box of the cassette release has a sticker which includes "53 SONGS ON 3
CASSETTES". The box also has "CHROME TAPE" on the spine and "3 CASSETTE
DELUXE EDITION" on the top and at front top right.
The first cassette booklet is the same as the 5LP set
booklet. The second cassette booklet is plain yellow on the outside front and back,
and the ten inside pages are the inner sleeves of the 5LP set.
The first printed page is Page 2, the front of the sleeve for record
1 on the 5LP set. I mistakenly said that the three cassette inserts were
blank inside, in fact they contain the tracklists and copyright details as
shown.
The three cassettes are again in a black plastic tray
as for the US cassette release. The cassettes of my copy are black with red CBS paper labels (similar to the record
labels). They are in clear plastic cases. The cassettes of Paul Shenton's
copy have the same red CBS paper labels, but the cassettes are now white.
The interior of the box of my copy is white, but
Paul Shenton says the interior of his cassette box is black.

This Spanish boxed set is again very rare! The box and the
cassettes were made in Spain. The address of Discos CBS S.A. on the rear of
the box is Paseo de la Castellana 93, 28046 Madrid. There were two booklets
as for the Spanish vinyl set. The cassette inserts are quite different from
those for the Dutch-made cassettes above, they have smaller, but have the
tracklisting on the inside. The cassettes are also completely different from
the Dutch-made cassettes, they are light grey instead of black, and have no
paper labels, the black text is printed directly on to each cassette. They
are also in black CBS plastic cases (the Dutch cassettes were in clear
cases). Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and

This 3 cassette release comes in a "book-style" case, so
probably dates from the late 1980s, before the CBS logo was replaced by
Columbia in Australia. The cassettes are light grey with light blue text,
there are no paper labels.
Thanks to Stuart Moore for information and scans.
CD Releases (1985 Edition)
"Biograph" - 12" boxed set edition, 3CD set - Columbia C3K 38830 (USA),
Jan 1986 onwards:
The CD edition was released in 1986 in a 12" square box and later in a 12" x
6" "long box" in the USA, Columbia C3K 86568 (scans of the latter required).
Like the cassette release, the inside sleeves of the LP release are included
here as a booklet. This release now contains a rarity, so is also included in 1985.
The track order is slightly different from the 5LP set.
Columbia C3K 38830 (USA), Jan 1986 (first
release):
Columbia C3K 38830 (USA) - front of CD box, scan by Gerd Rundel
(first release) |
The copies owned by Gerd Rundel and Jeff Schuldt must be
the first release. The box of these copies is different from that of
Jack from Canada below on front and rear as shown in the detail scans. CD1 has a mistake, track 18 is listed as "I DON'T
BELIEVE IN YOU". |

CD1 of Jack from Canada's copy below has track 18 listed
correctly and different copyright text at the bottom of the CD, as well as a
different song layout and differences left and right of the centre hole. The CD
inserts of both releases are the same.
Columbia C3K 38830 (USA), 1986 (second release - variant 1):
Columbia C3K 38830 (USA) - front of CD box, scan by Gerd Rundel
(second release variant 1) |
This copy is a second release variant. It seems to be a hybrid variant because of an
overlapping with subsequent releases. The front of the box looks the same as the first release but
the rear is
that of the second release. The inserts look the same as for the other listed
releases. The CDs have the same layout as those of the first release, but the "I DON'T
BELIEVE IN YOU" mistake on CD1 has now been corrected.

Terry Harvey has a promo copy of the second release with the barcode on the
back of the box obscured by a promo sticker. There are several differences from
Jack from Canada's copy: the box lifts completely off, there is no “hinge”; the
CDs are all housed upright in the box (unlike those of Jeff Schuldt's first
release copy);
there is no 12-page yellow booklet (with two blank pages). Instead the ten
printed sides from the 5LP inner sleeves are provided as five separate yellow
double-sided sheets. Any reference to sides (Side One, Side Two etc) have been
deleted.

There are a couple more differences with Terry's promo copy. He says:
1. The track timings list on the back of the CD cases (on white on the back
and on black inside - photos attached) differ (usually in seconds only) from
other versions I have. All but 11 give a different timing to the ones on my 12”
CD box. I doubt whether the actual tracks as played are different lengths but
some are stated as having up to a 7 second difference. On the promo, Percy’s
Song
-5 seconds, I Don’t Believe You -4, Visions Of
Johanna -7, Up To Me -5, I Believe In You - 7. There do seem to be variations on all the CD versions however. For instance,
Jet Pilot is: 12” promo 0.51, 12” UK 0.50, Fat box (Austria) 0.49. Also tracks 10 to 15 on CD2
all have marginally different timings from the
above three formats.
2. The insert in the 3CD cases is a four-page booklet (with pages 2 and 3 blank
white) rather than the single sheet insert in the standard 12” box.
The CDs have a different layout from those of the
previous releases.

This Club Edition release was
manufactured by Columbia for BMG Direct (see the barcode on the rear of the
box). It comes in a 12" square box like Jack's second US release
variant 2 and with the related booklet. The CDs and inserts look the same as
those of Jack's second US
variant 2 release with small differences: the reverses of the front inserts and
the rear inserts have
extra text "D207417-1/-2/-3" and "Printed in U.S.A."; the CDs have
extra "DIDP" numbers to the
right of the centre hole. |

CD Release (Aug 1997 Recalled Edition)
This edition, which had to be recalled because of the mistakes listed
in
1997, was
released in Aug 1997 in the USA only, reportedly in a run of 5,000 copies. The first run of
the Oct 1997 corrected edition has the same catalogue number, C3K 65298. It was
originally thought that the recalled
Biograph could be identified from the corrected reissue without breaking the
seal, because the grey on the slipcase is a true grey, whereas the corrected
release has a reddish tinge to the grey. This is not true of the UK release,
Columbia 488099 2 (see below), which was the corrected version from the outset,
and where the grey on the slipcase is definitely a true grey, so I can't
personally confirm this. Derek Barker of "Isis" informs me that he has a copy of
the corrected edition in a box which is true grey. Stocks of the original
slipcase were probably also used in Oct 1997 for corrected copies, as I've now
had several reports of corrected copies in a sliocase which is true grey. The
only reliable way of identifying a recalled copy without a dated receipt is to
open the packaging and play it!

CD Releases (Oct 1997 Corrected Edition)
This set corrects the three errors of the recalled edition
but leaves in one
change - the version of Mixed Up Confusion is now a previously unreleased stereo
version of the original single, not the alternate take from the original
Biograph (see above).
Thanks to Tom Willems for news that the 2011 European 3CD
"ecolbook" release of Biograph (see below) contains the alternate take of Mixed Up Confusion
from the 1985 release of the set (R-0145 see 1962
and 1985).
If this is a deliberate change, and not just a "Columbia Cock-up" that will be
corrected as in 1997,
then the 1997 stereo version of the original single (see 1962)
will become a rarity! It has been provisionally allocated the R-number of
R-0888.
Thanks to Blake Eikenberry for information that 2013's Side Tracks,
released as a 2CD set as part of The Complete Album Collection Vol. One
and also as a limited numbered edition 3LP set, also contains the alternate take
of Mixed Up Confusion from the 1985 release of Biograph (R-0748). This
means a "Columbia Cock-up" has been set in stone! See

and

This release comes in a double-width jewel case, with the original
12" booklets and record sleeves consolidated into a small booklet.
Note the lighter grey on the front of the slipcase compared to the US release.
The CDs are the same as the 2002 "book" edition, see below. Thanks
to Bill Hester for scans of the CDs from his copy bought in New Zealand. They
were made in Austria and the packaging looks identical to that of my copy bought
in the UK. |

"Biograph" - 3CD "book-style" edition, Sony MHCP
1151-3 (Japan), 18 Oct 2006:
This book-style release comes without an obi. The copy shown
is a promo and had a promo sheet covering the back of the pack inside the
shrink-wrap. The CDs have "SAMPLE LOANED" in the clear centres. There are
two stapled booklets, both of 44 pages in Japanese and English.

"Biograph" - 3CD "ecolbook" edition, Columbia/Legacy/Sony
Music 88697 85648 2 (Europe), 28 Mar 2011:
Thanks to Tom Willems for news that this 2011 European 3CD
"ecolbook" release of Biograph contains the alternate take of Mixed Up Confusion
from the 1985 release of the set (R-0748 - an edited version of R-0145, see 1962
and 1985).
I have bought this edition, and it is indeed the alternate take. If this is a deliberate change, and not just a "Columbia Cock-up" that will be
corrected as in 1997,
then the stereo version of the original single (see 1962) will
become a rarity again! The "ecolbook" is the size of a DVD case and contains
spindles for the three CDs plus a bound-in booklet. The tray artwork is new
for Biograph.
