"The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall" - 2CD promo set, Columbia AC2K 86882 (USA), Jan 2004:

Columbia AC2K 86882 (USA) - booklet front scan by Jens Winter
R-0694 The Times They Are A-Changin' - recorded live, Philharmonic Hall, New York City, 31 Oct 1964, version preceded by stage announcement on early US Columbia promo copies of The Bootleg Series Vol. 6, Jan 2004

These early copies (which may have no artwork and be on CD-Rs) are rarities - scans required! Later promo copies of the set and the commercial release omit the stage announcement.

Thanks to Harold Lepidus for the information and Jens Winter for the scan of a later version with artwork but without the stage announcement.

"The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall" - 2 SA-CD set, Audio Fidelity AFZ5 230 (USA), Mar 2016:

Audio Fidelity AFZ5 230 (USA) - picture from Steve Hoffman forum
Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin and Gerd Rundel for information that The Bootleg Series Vol. 6 - Bob Dylan Live 1964: Concert At Philharmonic Hall from 2004 was released on SA-CD in stereo and 5.0 surround sound remastered by Steve Hoffman in Mar 2016. As this is a numbered limited edition, the 5.0 surround sound tracks are rarities.

R-2230 The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall - enhanced stereo version of 2004 live album on Audio Fidelity/Columbia SA-CD release, 2016

R-2231 The Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Bob Dylan Live 1964 - Concert At Philharmonic Hall - 5.0 surround sound version of 2004 live album on Audio Fidelity/Columbia SA-CD release, 2016

Thanks to Keith Venturoni for information that this release also includes the stage announcement preceding The Times They Are A-Changin' which was previously found only on early promo copies of this set in 2004. Because this is a rarity, this release is also listed here. However, Bowie Hurde informs me that some banter from Bob Dylan included on the original Columbia/Legacy release has been deleted. Dylan's introduction to Gates Of Eden “This is called a sacrilegious lullaby in D minor. That is the D minor. No in all seriousness….” has been completely removed. This is apparently missing from the regular stereo and the stereo SA-CD layers, but it is included on the 5.0 surround sound mix. This appears to have been an error on behalf of the Sony Music team that supplied Audio Fidelity with the original tapes, but it is unlikely to be corrected.

Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin, Gerd Rundel and André Wilbers for information and scans.

"Victoria's Secret Exclusive: Lovesick" - 9 track promo CD for Victoria's Secret, Sony A72812 (USA), Mar 2004:

Sony A72812 (USA) - CD

This album was produced exclusively by the Sony Music Custom Marketing Group for the lingerie manufacturer Victoria's Secret. Not was Bob's song Love Sick used in their US TV ads, but also Bob himself appeared in the Apr 2004 ad with Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima in scenes shot in Venice, Italy! The three pictures used in the artwork are previously unpublished - the one on the inside of the front insert shows Bob playing piano on stage in 2003. The Limited Edition CD could be purchased for $10 with a Victoria's Secret purchase, in any store, by phone or on their web-site, up to 11 Apr 2004. Note that "Lovesick" in the album title is one word.

R-0658 Love Sick (5:24) - exclusive remix, slightly longer than Time Out Of Mind version
This track was one of the 42 rarities included for download with the Aug 2006 Apple iTunes Bob Dylan Collection, see Online Performances (Other).

R-0299 Things Have Changed from the Wonder Boys soundtrack album as well as Columbia compilations and singles, lyrics on bobdylan.com here
Now no longer a rarity since it is included in The Essential Bob Dylan (2000) on the bobdylan.com albums page.

Tracklisting:

  1. She Belongs To Me

  2. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right

  3. To Ramona

  4. Boots Of Spanish Leather

  5. It's All Over Now, Baby Blue

  6. Love Sick (remix) (R-0658)

  7. Make You Feel My Love

  8. Things Have Changed (R-0299)

  9. Sugar Baby

Columbia/Legacy 88985450607 (Europe) - 2017 7" single front (my copy)

The remix of Love Sick has a much cleaner sound than on the original Time Out Of Mind album, and it was thought it may have come from the as yet unreleased remixed/remastered album that was scheduled to be included as one of the 15 Dylan albums released on hybrid SA-CD in Sep 2003, see International Albums (Regular). I'm told by Sonny Boy McFitzson that Make You Feel My Love is also possibly a remix, with the vocals and piano stronger than on the original on Time Out Of Mind, so may be from the same source.

This version of Love Sick was released in 2017 as a bonus 7" stereo single with the "20th Anniversary Edition" 2LP stereo vinyl release of Time Out Of Mind, see 2017.

There is a folded front insert, inside which is a folded leaflet advertising the latest Bootleg Series Vol. 6: Live 1964 release and other Dylan albums.

Various Artists - "The Very Best Of New Woman" - 2CD compilation, Virgin TV VTVCD 599 (UK), 8 Mar 2004:

Virgin TV VTVCD 599 (UK) - picture from www.amazon.co.uk
R-0359-18 Rise (Bob Dylan/Gabrielle/F. Unger-Hamilton/Ollie Dagois) - a looped sample from the start of the version of Knockin' On Heaven's Door from the Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid soundtrack is used throughout this song performed by UK soul singer Gabrielle

This is a "Best Of" compilation from a series of "New Woman" compilations of songs by (mostly) female artists that started in 1999. This implies that R-0359 appeared previously on a "New Woman" CD, but I can't find it (several of the albums have other songs by Gabrielle).

For the original single and album by Gabrielle, see 2000.

The main title Nür Das Beste [Only The Best] is missing from the front design but is on the rear insert and the CD.

This album of Dylan covers contains three tracks with Bob participating! There is an 8-page booklet. Bob's presence is only credited on Nashville Skyline Rag. The only song writing credit is "all songs written by Bob Dylan", there is no credit to Willie Nelson for co-writing Heartland. The US release comes in a digipak but the Canadian release is in a jewel case.

R-0074-5 Nashville Skyline Rag - version with Earl Scruggs on banjo and Bob on guitar, recorded at Tom Allen's home, Carmel, NY, Dec 1970
For the original 1971 Columbia release of Earl Scruggs Performing With His Family and Friends, see 1971.

R-0216-6 Heartland (Bob Dylan/Willie Nelson) - Bob duets with Willie on this co-written song from his 1993 album Across The Borderline, lyrics on bobdylan.com here

Heartland also appeared on the Norwegian Polydor compilation CD The Country Collection (see 1993), on the US Columbia Legacy 1995 Willie Nelson boxed set Revolutions Of Time: The Journey 1975-1993 (see 1995), on the 2CD Universal Holland compilation That's Country (see 1998) and on the Sony Music/Reclam Music Edition Germany compilation CD All About Americana (see 2015). There is also an edit of the song on the VHS promo video of this album featuring Bob, see VHS & DVD 1990s Part 1.

R-0215-4 Boots Of Spanish Leather - Bob plays harmonica on Nanci Griffith's cover version, from her 1993 Elektra album Other Voices, Other Rooms, see 1993

This track also appears on the Columbia Australia compilation Doin' Dylan (see 1995) and the US Putumayo compilation American Folk (see 2005).

Other artists featured are Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, The Byrds and Emmylou Harris.

Thanks to Tim Dunn for this information about a promo copy of this album: "If there are other promos, I don’t know, but this one merely had the UPC (Universal Price Code) on the rear sleeve blacked out by a marker. The catalog number is Shout! Factory DK 37487. The disc reads ‘Distributed by Sony Music Entertainment Inc.” It is a gatefold package, with a sticker on the shrink-wrap listing five artists, with a six-page booklet tucked in a sleeve on the left inside. The notes are by Eddie Gorodetsky, he of "Christmas with Eddie G." and “Dharma & Greg.” Oddly, only “Nashville Skyline Rag” mentions Dylan as a guest although “Heartland’ is from Willie Nelson’s Across The Borderline and “Boots of Spanish Leather” is from Nanci Griffith’s Other Voices, Other Rooms. There is even an ISBN (something I’ve never understood for music recordings): 0-7389-2812-7."

The Essential Earl Scruggs - this 2004 release has a version of Nashville Skyline Rag, but it's a version by Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt, not R-0074

Thanks to Freddy Ordoñez Araque for information about the Columbia 2CD set The Essential Earl Scruggs, released 2 Mar 2004. This compilation has a version of Nashville Skyline Rag on CD2, but it's a version by Earl Scruggs, Lester Flatt, and the Foggy Mountain Boys, not R-0074. The original release of this version was on a 1970 Flatt & Scruggs album called Final Fling.

Thanks to David Plentus, Jean-Pol Hiernaux and Peter Oudejans for information and scans.

Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs - "Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs" - 4CD boxed set, Collectables Records COL 0236, 8 Jun 2004:

Collectables Records COL 0236 - front of box

R-0074-5 Nashville Skyline Rag - version with Earl Scruggs on banjo and Bob on guitar, recorded at Tom Allen's home, Carmel, NY, Dec 1970
For the original 1971 Columbia release of Earl Scruggs Performing With His Family and Friends, see 1971.

This track is on CD1, which also contains Love Is Just A Four Letter Word with Joan Baez and You Ain't Goin' Nowhere with The Byrds, both also from the 1971 album.

Thanks to Harold Lepidus for information about this set.

"Bob Dylan In Concert" - stereo acetate LP, Fantasy 77182 (USA), tracks recorded 1963-64, acetate mastered 1972-80, surfaced Jul 2004:

This is now revealed to be the second version of the cancelled 1964 Columbia US Bob Dylan In Concert album!

To present the material more effectively it's been moved to 1964.

Thanks to Keith Venturoni and Jeff Gold for information and scans.

RAS/Sanctuary RZDDD008 (UK) - CD2 with R-0665

These 2CD sets have R-0664 and R-0665. The front insert is a 16 page booklet and both CDs mimic Columbia vinyl releases with "365° SOUND"/"STEREO" logos. The US CDs are of slightly different design from the UK CDs, with CD1 being white/black on red instead of black on red, and CD2 being green/red on black instead of black on green.

The other songs on the set are The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll (Michael Rose); Maggie's Farm (Toots Hibbert); Blowin' In The Wind (Don Carlos); Mr Tambourine Man (Gregory Isaacs); One Too Many Mornings (Abijah); The Times They Are A-Changin' (Apple Gabriel); Gotta Serve Somebody (Nazio with Drummie Zeb & the Razor Posse featuring Incline); A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (Billy Mystic/Mystic Revealers); Don't Think Twice, It's All Right (J C Lodge); Lay, Lady, Lay (The Mighty Diamonds); Knockin' On Heaven's Door (Luciano); Subterranean Homesick Blues (Sizzla) and Just Like A Woman (Beres Hammond). The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest (Yellowman) was originally included in the tracklist but has not made it on to the final album.

For more information about the album, here is the link to its web-site .

RAS/Sanctuary Records/Silverline 284603-2 (USA) - front with sticker in clear plastic slipcase, scan by Jack from Canada

This set was released by Silverline in the USA on 25 Jan 2005 in a "DualDisc" format - this is a double-sided disc with a CD layer on one side and a DVD layer on the other. The DVD layer includes the album in 5.1 surround sound plus videos for Subterranean Homesick Blues, "making the album", seven dub remixes and additional content. However, this "DualDisc" release omits both versions of I And I and therefore does not contain the Dylan rarities. The jewel case comes in a clear plastic "DualDisc" slipcase. For full details, see Honourable Mentions - Covers (Various Artists).

There is also a limited edition vinyl 2LP set released both in the USA and in the UK for Europe. David Plentus tells me it contains only five of the eight tracks on the bonus "dub" CD, but it does include R-0665 as well as R-0664. Sides 1 and 2 (not shown) have no Dylan participation.

This promo CD has been released by Columbia Records to promote the publication of the first part of Bob's autobiography "Chronicles Volume One" by Simon & Schuster in the USA. It has two previously unreleased tracks, plus a previously released rarity:

R-0679 The Cuckoo Is A Pretty Bird (Traditional) - recorded live at the Gaslight Café, New York, Oct 1962
This performance has since been released on Bob Dylan Live At The Gaslight 1962, Starbucks/Hear Music/Sony Music Custom Marketing Group (USA), see 2005. For other 1962 Gaslight Café performances see Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000: Thirty-Nine Years Of Great Concert Performances (Sony Music Japan, 2001) and The 50th Anniversary Collection (Sony Music Europe, Dec 2012).

R-0680 Dignity - original 1989 piano demo (piano and vocal only)
This version has significantly different lyrics from the released track. This demo version of Dignity was released in Oct 2008 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs: Rare And Unreleased 1989-2006, see here. However, Peter Coulthard points out that the Tell Tale Signs version has approximately five seconds of piano intro that is missing from R-0680, so it remains a rarity.

The original Oh Mercy out-take of Dignity produced by Daniel Lanois (R-0273) first appeared on Touched By An Angel: The Album - see 1998 and Released Rarities. Also on The Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2, see 2000 and the UK/French release of The Essential Bob Dylan, see 2001, and now on the 2007 3CD compilation Dylan. The 1994 Brendan O'Brien remixed version for Greatest Hits Vol. 3 retained only Bob's vocal and piano and added new backing. R-0680 is now also on the 2005 Sony France tie-in compilation Chroniques: Volume 1, see 2005.
For Greatest Hits Vol. 3 and Dylan, see International Albums (Regular).

R-0071-2 New Morning - early copies of the album have Bob saying "OK, here we go" at start of title track

The other tracks on this CD are New Morning (album version); Father of Night (from New Morning); Political World (from Oh Mercy); Man In The Long Black Coat (from Oh Mercy). New Morning and Father Of Night appear to be remastered, and may be from a forthcoming remastered release of New Morning. New Morning includes the tuning/intro that was present on the original US and UK vinyl releases but has been absent from all CD releases of the album (R-0071, see 1970). This is a rarity at the moment, but if a new release of the New Morning album includes it, the track without the intro will become the rarity!

The CD is in a jewel case with a clear tray and a red sticker on the front describing the disc. The front insert is a single card. The disc itself is plain red with a spoof white "361° SOUND STEREO" logo as on 1960s stereo LPs, which had "360° SOUND STEREO". The reverse of the rear insert (under the CD tray) has an excerpt of typescript from the book. This six track CD is available at branches of outlets such as Tower Records, Borders, Newbury Comics and Bestbuy with purchase of the book plus a Dylan CD. Reports of a second CD single with only five tracks omitting R-0679 as listed on the Newbury Comics web-site are incorrect - Newbury Comics are supplying the same 6-track CD as everyone else, and their web-page originally gave information that had been wrongly supplied to them by Columbia Records!

Thanks to Peter Gilmer, Harold Lepidus, Kurt Schroeder and Tim Dunn for information. Thanks to David Plentus for scans. Thanks to Tim Dunn for the copy of "Newsweek" with Bob on the cover, and inside talking about his book. Thanks to John Lettiere for the book and disc.

Columbia SAMPCM 14513 2 (Europe) - front insert scan by Jean-Pierre Mercier

Thanks to Jean-Pierre Mercier and Ian Woodward for the information that this CD was available from French booksellers in May 2005 with a new European catalogue number SAMPCM 14513 2 tied in with the publication of the French translation of Bob's book. These promo CDs are scheduled to be offered as prizes in various contests organised by various French music magazines ("Libération" "Les Inrockuptibles"). Gerd Rundel points out the CD and rear insert are dated 2004, but that is because of the original release in the USA in Oct 2004.

Bob Dylan and his Band - "Tryin' To Get To Heaven" - promo single-track CD promoting Bob Dylan's autobiography "Chronicles Volume One", Columbia/Legacy CSK 54808 (USA), Oct 2004:

Columbia/Legacy CSK 54808 (USA) (my copy)
R-0681 Tryin' To Get To Heaven - live audience recording from the UK in 2000 (now identified as Wembley Arena, London, England, 5 Oct 2000) (A)
Thanks to Les Kokay for identifying this track. It was previously identified wrongly as from the Guildhall, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, 25 Sep 2000. It's noteworthy because of an appreciative comment from a member of the audience - "F**king lovely!".

This CD single credited to "Bob Dylan and his Band" is in a plain black card sleeve with a cut-out to show the CD label. The performance is described as "Bob Dylan field recording, UK, 2000". The CD is being given away in independent record stores in the USA to promote the release of "Chronicles Volume One" as is the CD above.

Thanks to Hervé from France for information and to Éamonn Ó Catháin for the disc.

This performance is now included on the third CD of the 3CD set of The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs: Rare And Unreleased 1989-2006 (see 2008). As this set is a Limited Edition of 5000 copies, R-0681 remains a rarity. Thanks to Evan Marshall for confirming that this performances are in fact the same and to Les Kokay for listening to a variety of circulating recordings for Portsmouth and Wembley and confirming the released performance is Wembley!

On the insert for this album this performance is identified as "live in Australia", which is incorrect as Bob has never performed this song in Australia! There was speculation it was the live performance of Mutineer from the University of California, Berkeley, CA, 11 Oct 2002, that was up on bobdylan.com that month, see Online Performances (bobdylan.com), but it's now confirmed it comes from Red Bluff, CA, 7 Oct 2002.

"Gaumont Theatre Sheffield/Free Trade Hall Manchester" - two single-sided acetates, Columbia Recording Studios, Nashville, TN (USA), 1966, surfaced in Ireland, Oct 2004:

Acetate 3 - Sheffield, 16 May 1966, scan by Annie West (R-0685, R-0686)

R-0685 It's All Over Now, Baby Blue - live from Gaumont Theatre, Sheffield, England, 16 May 1966, from acetates made by Columbia Recording Studios, Nashville TN

R-0686 Desolation Row - live as R-0685

R-0685 and R-0686 are now officially released on the Columbia/Legacy USA/Europe 36CD set The 1966 Live Recordings, Nov 2016.

These two single-sided acetates were found by Annie West in Oct 2004. One is from Sheffield, 16 May 1966, and contains It's All Over Now, Baby Blue and Desolation Row, otherwise officially unreleased. The second is from Manchester, 17 May 1966. She says: "I'm in Sligo Ireland by the way, and the story of the acetates is that they came from Bob Johnson when he was here producing an album for the Waterboys. he gave them away (after trying to sell them) and they ended up in my house where I found them at the very bottom of a box full of albums for throwing out!"

Thanks to Arie de Reus for the information that Acetate 4 has One Too Many Mornings (final part), Ballad Of A Thin Man; Like A Rolling Stone.

For the long-awaited release of the Manchester 1966 concert in 1998 as The Bootleg Series Vol. 4: Bob Dylan Live 1966 - The "Royal Albert Hall" Concert, see  International Albums (Regular).

For the first two acetates of the 1966 live performance with The Hawks, see International Album Releases (Dylan-Only Compilations 1965-69. For performances included in 1991 on a CD with Il Dizionario del Rock, an Italian part-work magazine, which are probably from the Manchester Free Trade Hall concert, see Questionable Releases.

Thanks to Annie West, C P Lee and Arie de Reus for information and scans. Annie is a renowned artist and illustrator, to find her, see here .

"MPH Acetates" - two sets of five 10" acetates made by Music Publishers Holding Corporation for Warner Bros (USA), 1967 (?), surfaced in Nov 2004/Apr 2024:
R-0031, R-0035, R-0539, R-0691 and R-0692 are no longer rarities because they were released officially in 2010 on the Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music set
The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964. R-0693 remains unreleased (but see comments re complete takes below).

Warner Bros. XTV 221567 (USA, 1967) - acetate label scan by Hans Seegers

These acetates on stock labels with handwritten or typed text contain seven then unreleased Bob Dylan songs. All but one are all single-sided. The publisher is identified as "W-7 Music", which is Warner Bros/7 Arts, also publisher of a 12" acetate LP that surfaced in 1967 (illustrated here and in 1967). My tentative identification of the performances is as follows:

R-0031-3 Ain't Gonna Grieve (No More) - Witmark demo, recorded Aug 1963, also surfaced in 1967 on a 12" Warner Bros/7 Arts acetate LP, see 1967, released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964, 2010

The version of this song released on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 in 1991 is a live performance from Carnegie Hall, New York, 26 Oct 1963. For the studio version from the Columbia test pressing and promotional copies of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, see 1963.

R-0035-2 The Death Of Emmett Till - lyrics on bobdylan.com here, Witmark demo, recorded Dec 1962, surfaced in 1967 on a 12" Warner Bros/7 Arts acetate LP, see 1967, released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964, 2010
For the May 1962 Broadside recording R-0082, not released until 1972, see 1972.

R-0036-2 (I'd Hate To Be You On That) Dreadful Day - Witmark demo, recorded Mar 1963, surfaced in 1967 on a 12" Warner Bros/7 Arts acetate LP, see 1967, released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 9 - The Witmark Demos 1962-1964, 2010
For the Nov 1962 Broadside recording R-0081, not released until 1972, see 1972.

R-0693    Bob Dylan's New Orleans Rag - out-take from The Times They Are A-Changin', Aug or Oct 1963, previously unreleased (this is the only song here where a Witmark version is not known). Lyrics on bobdylan.com here
Complete takes of this song were recorded at Columbia Studios, New York, on 6 Aug 1963 (CO78976, take 1), 7 Aug 1963 (CO78976, take 3) and 24 Oct 1963 (CO79693, takes 1 and 2). Take 2 from 24 Oct 1963 has now been released on the Columbia/Legacy Europe 6LP limited edition 50th Anniversary Collection 1963, Dec 2013, and is in fact this version.

For a live version recorded 12 Apr 1963, Town Hall, New York, from the unreleased 1964 Columbia album Bob Dylan In Concert, see 1964. This has also now been released on the Columbia/Legacy Europe 6LP limited edition 50th Anniversary Collection 1963, Dec 2013.

I have also added five MPHC acetates discovered on eBay by François Guillez in Apr 2024 that date from the same time period. One is double-sided and contains both The Death of Emmett Till (R-0031) and Ain't Gonna Grieve (R-0035).

Acetate photo by Damien Napoli (R-0539)

Also shown are photos of a strange acetate of one of these Witmark demos, Walkin' Down The Line (R-0539, see 1963), with the same label and typewritten text as the others. However, it has Bob's name as "BOB ZIMMERMAN" (the copy shown above has "Bob Dylan"). This is strange because as far as I know Bob never used his real name after he came to New York in 1961, even before he changed it legally to "Dylan" in Aug 1962. Jeff Gold of Record Mecca was commissioned by Bob's business manager Jeff Rosen to appraise over 10,000 Dylan items at the Bob Dylan Archive at the University of Tulsa, OK, and did not find one with Bob's real name on! Tim Dunn says that not one of Bob's copyrights mentions the name "Zimmerman", not even the earliest Leeds/Duchess Music contracts, and Bob's contract with Witmark was only in the name of "Bob Dylan".
