Because of the length of the 1978 page, this sub-page contains details of all the stereo vinyl releases and CD releases of this 1978 album in its original form, which is now unavailable. Information here is confined to listing all the releases only. Full details of each release are to be found on the "Street-Legal" page of International Album Releases (Regular Albums).

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Original US stereo LP, Columbia JC 35453 (USA), 15 Jun 1978

The front photograph by Howard Alk shows Bob in a doorway in Santa Monica, CA. "Street-legal" is an American term for a hot rod car that has been modified to allow it to be driven on public roads. It has been suggested that the term refers to Bob's newly-divorced single status, but he's clearly wearing a wedding ring in the picture! The rear photo is also by Howard Alk, taken live on stage during the Far East tour in early 1978. The two photographs on the inner sleeve were taken by Joel Bernstein in a night club in Melbourne, Australia, on the same tour - the man with Bob on the inner sleeve back is singer and guitarist George Benson.

Vinyl and Tape Releases

"Street-Legal" - original vinyl album releases, Columbia/CBS (various catalogue numbers) (Worldwide), 1978:
Since this album was re-released on CD in 1999 in a remastered and remixed form, the differences on the original album from the 1999 release have become rarities! For more vinyl and tape releases of the original album, see the Street-Legal page of International Album Releases (Regular). For the remastered CD also see International Album Releases (Regular).

Specific differences from the current remastered CD are:

R-0284 Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power) - this track fades into True Love Tends To Forget, on the 1999 version they're separated. Also, Keith Venturoni points out that the mandolin is much more prominent on this original mix.

R-0594 True Love Tends To Forget - this track fades in from Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power)

Les Kokay points out that this fade-out/fade-in is reinstated on the 2013 Steve Berkowitz remix of the original album in The Complete Album Collection Vol. 1, see below.

Changing Of The Guards at 6:36 is 30 seconds shorter than the 1999 7:06 version, but this original version can still be found on CD on 1994's Greatest Hits Vol. 3, so it's not a rarity. In a bizarre twist, the version of Street-Legal in the 2012 47CD boxed set The Complete Album Collection Vol. One is a remastered version of this original 1978 album, so Changing Of The Guards reverts to a shorter length of 6:41, instead of the extended version at 7:06 from the 1999 remixed release. It does however, have a final drum beat that was missing from the 6:36 1978 version! Although the version of Changing Of The Guards on the 2007 Dylan compilation is 6:34 in length it is not the original 6:36 version from this 1978 release of Street-Legal, but an edited version of the extended 7:06 version from the 1999 remixed album unique to the 2007 compilation. Thanks to Larry Crum for information!

"Street-Legal" - 8-track cartridge releases, Columbia JCA 35453 (USA/Canada); CBS 42-86067 (UK/Spain), 1978:

Street-LegalUS8TrkFront.jpg (11797 bytes)
Columbia TC8 35453 (USA) - front of slipcase, scan by Stuart Moore
8-track was a continuous tape cartridge format, with four stereo "programs" per tape. The track order was rearranged to make all four programs of roughly equivalent length. New Pony is split between programs 3 and 4 - as this is a rarity, these releases are listed here. More details are in International Album Releases (Regular).

R-1237A New Pony (Part I) - first part of song split over two programs
R-1237B New Pony (Part II) - second part of song split over two programs

A remastered version of Street-Legal is included on the 47CD Sony Music/Columbia/Legacy boxed set The Complete Album Collection Vol. One, Nov 2013, see International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s. Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for pointing out this is a remastered version of the original 1978 album, so for example Changing Of The Guards reverts to a shorter length of 6:41, instead of the extended version at 7:06 from the 1999 remixed release. It does however, have a final drum beat that is missing from the 1978 version, which was timed at 6:36. Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power) again fades into True Love Tends To Forget, on the 1999 version they're separated, and the prominent mandolin from the original mix has been restored. This means there are now two significantly different versions of the album on sale! If this 2013 release becomes the standard CD version on sale, then the original vinyl, tape and CD releases will cease to be rarities!

Thanks to Hans Seegers, Franck Faugere, Keith Schweiger and Manuel García Jara for the scans.
