7" Singles

Various Artists (Artists United Against Apartheid) - "(Ain't Gonna Play) Sun City"/"Not So Far Away (Dub Version)" - 7" singles: Manhattan (various catalogue numbers) (Worldwide), Dec 1985:
Bob contributes vocals to this charity song. For the Dec 1985 VHS video The Making Of Sun City, see VHS & DVD 1980s. Thanks to Bill Hester for clarifying that there are in fact four versions of this song with different times (which explains the gap in the R-numbers as two were added later), also for information about Australia and New Zealand releases.

Manhattan B50017 (USA/Canada):

Manhattan B50017 (USA) - 7" single front, scan by Manuel García Jara

R-0170 (Ain't Gonna Play) Sun City ("Little Steven" Miami Steve Van Zandt) - 7" single version (4:58)
The US promo 7" single and most worldwide 7" singles time the A-side at 4:58, but the US commercial, West German, Italian, South African and Zimbabwean 7" singles below time it at 5:09. Is this really a slightly extended mix or just an error?

The B-side of the 7" single is Not So Far Away (Dub Version) by the Artists United Against Apartheid ensemble from the album below, but not including Bob.

Manhattan MT 7 (UK), Manhattan/Capitol MT 7 (Ireland):

Manhattan MT 7 (UK) - 7" single front scan by Manuel García Jara
These two releases share the same catalogue number and a similar sleeve, but the Irish record is unique in having Capitol labels instead of the Manhattan labels that all other worldwide single releases except Zimbabwe have. Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for confirming that this single is indeed from Ireland, although there is no country of origin on the sleeve or the record labels.

Manhattan 2009277 (France/Spain/Portugal) - 7" single front scan by Hans Seegers

The French single has injection labels (see here for the French We Are The World single with the same labels). For more details of injection labels, which were used mostly in France but also in the UK, see Mono Singles 1970-76 (Wigwam/Copper Kettle, 1970).

The Spanish and Portuguese singles have regular paper labels. The Portuguese single was made in Portugal by EMI-Valentim de Cavalho Musica Lda for Manhattan Records.

Manhattan MH-1634 (Australia) - 7" commercial single B-side scan by Hans Seegers (no Dylan)

Manhattan F-50017 (New Zealand) - 7" commercial single A-side scan by Bill Hester (R-0170)

The Australian 7" single had catalogue number Manhattan MH 1634 and a picture sleeve which states "MANUFACTURED AND DISTRIBUTED BY EMI MUSIC GROUP OF COMPANIES, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, AND LOWER HUTT, NEW ZEALAND". The New Zealand single Manhattan F-50017 was apparently sold without a picture sleeve, and has no country of manufacture on the labels. Both singles were on sale in New Zealand.

Manhattan JCL 2009277 (South Africa), Capitol JCL 2009277 (Zimbabwe):

Manhattan JCL 2009277 (South Africa) - 7" single front scan by Manuel García Jara
Surprisingly for a single protesting against apartheid, this single was released in apartheid South Africa, even though it was soon banned! The "EMISA" code on the rear sleeve means "EMI South Africa". The Zimbabwean single did not have a picture sleeve, and is on the Capitol label like the Irish single above, not Manhattan. Both singles have the same catalogue number, JCL 2009277.

The A-side on both these singles is timed at 5:09, not 4:58 as for most worldwide singles.

Various Artists (Artists United Against Apartheid) - "Sun City"/Emilio José - "Victoria" - stereo promo 7" single: EMI DIF 371 (Argentina), Dec 1985:

EMI DIF 371 (Argentina) - 7" promo single A-side scan by Hans Seegers (R-0518)

R-0518 (Ain't Gonna Play) Sun City (Version II) (Miami Steve Van Zandt) - second album version (5:42), see below

This Argentinean promo single is unique in that it has the album version from Side 2 (5:42) as the A-side, not the single version (4:58). The B-side is an unrelated track by an Argentinean artist. It has dark-yellow promo stamps on both labels with text "VENTA PROHIBIDA PROMOCIONAL" (sale forbidden promotional).

Thanks to Hans Seegers for information and scans.

/West Germany) - LP front scan by Olav Langum (both releases)

The last song on Side 2, Silver And Gold performed by Bono, Ron Wood and Keith Richards, is listed on the rear of the LP sleeve but not on the rear of the first release inner sleeve (not shown). On the Australian LP below there's a front sticker listing it as a "bonus song". However, all these LPs have it! Even so, Keith Richards and Ron Wood are not listed on the rear sleeve of most LPs. The top artist listing on this rear sleeve ends with Nona Hendrix and the bottom artist listing ends with Bobby Womack.

Paul Shenton's second release copy has a printed yellow oval with red text on the rear sleeve listing Silver And Gold as a bonus song. This copy also comes with the double-sided insert in English with information about apartheid in South Africa and the Artists United campaign as with the Italian release below.

The record labels of this second release are slightly different - on the second release labels the black blocks in the design are now blue.

The front of the UK LP is the same as that of the Dutch LP. Keith Richards and Ron Wood are also missing from the artist listing on the rear sleeve of the first two releases. The record of Kenneth Robson's copy comes in a picture inner sleeve that doesn't list Silver And Gold for Side 2 on the rear. The front of the inner sleeve has a collage of photos of the participating artists - except Bob!

Paul Shenton has two different copies. The second release copy has the same front sleeve, inner sleeve front and record labels as Kenneth Robson's copy, but the rear sleeve and inner sleeve rear are different. The artist listing is the same omitting Keith Richards and Ron Wood, but Silver And Gold is printed higher up, now part of the track list instead of being separate. Silver And Gold is now listed for Side 2 on the rear of the inner sleeve. Paul's third release copy again has the same front sleeve and record labels, but with a third design rear sleeve, the same as that of the Italian release below. Silver And Gold is now printed on the second line of song titles, not on a separate third line as on the first two rear sleeves, while Keith Richards and Ron Wood are listed alphabetically amongst the artists. Surprisingly, the inner sleeve of this copy is the same as that of the first release, omitting Silver And Gold on the rear - this must be an error!

Manhattan 64 2404671 (Italy):

Manhattan 64 2404671 (Italy) - front photocopy by Paul Shenton
The Italian release comes with the same inner sleeve as other releases, but there is an extra double-sided insert in English with information about apartheid in South Africa and the Artists United campaign. The artists listing on the rear sleeve is different from all others except the third UK release and the Japanese release, because it adds Keith Richards and Ron Wood in alphabetical order.
