New Morning
(1970)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

For releases of this album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

For albums with the title Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 2 with different tracklists, see International Albums (Dylan-only Compilations). For the UK release More Bob Dylan Greatest Hits, which has a slightly different tracklist, see here.

Ian Woodward has a copy of a contemporary Columbia US LP with an insert headed "SQ - The Quadraphonic Record" promoting the Columbia SQ Quadraphonic System which includes a list of available Columbia Quadraphonic LPs and 8-track Quadraphonic tape cartridges. This includes Nashville Skyline, where a Quadraphonic release is known to exist, but also Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 2, which to the best of my knowledge has never been available in Quadraphonic.

Vinyl and Tape Releases

"Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II" - stereo vinyl 2LP set, Columbia KG 31120 (USA), 17 Nov 1971; Columbia PG 31120 (USA), mid-1970s, re-released late 1970s and mid/late 1980s:

Columbia KG 31120 (USA), acetate, 5 Nov 1971:

Columbia KG 31120 (USA) - acetate Side 1, picture from eBay
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding a double-sided acetate of Record 1 on eBay. This comes in a buff Transco Product generic sleeve and has white Columbia Recording Studios, New York, labels with handwritten text. The text includes the matrix numbers (Side 1 - AL 31123 (a mistake?), Side 2 - BL 31121), date "11-5-71" (5 Nov 1971), overall timings, and the name "J. Brown". "J. Brown" is Jim Brown, who was the National Album Promotion Manager for Columbia Records at the time, based in New York. Thanks to Peter Coulthard for information and Bruce Mulle for photos.

Columbia KG 31120 (USA), 17 Nov 1971:

Columbia KG 31120 (USA) - front with stickers, scan by Steven Fant (1971 release)

Gerd Rundel has a promo copy with two timing strips on the inside of the gatefold sleeve. The records have commercial Columbia labels, although the Side 1 label differs from that of Steven Fant's commercial Side 1 label below in that the listing for track 4 is much more indented and the line spacing is different (see detailed scans below). The Sides 2-4 labels are identical. The records of this copy have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 31121-1F, Side 2 - P BL 31121-1E, Side 3 - P AL 31122-1G, Side 4 - P BL 31122-1D.

Renaud Depierreux also has a promo copy with two timing strips on the front of the gatefold sleeve. The record labels have the new 1970s style with "Columbia" in a ring round the circumference/ They are completely different from the other two copies shown, with the album title on two lines instead of three, and the text in a different type face (variant 1). The records of this copy have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 31121-1C, Side 2 - P BL 31121-1C, Side 3 - P AL 31122-1C, Side 4 - P BL 31122-1C. There is also a handwritten "P" on each side.

Steven Fant's US copy has two stickers on the front of the shrink-wrap and the record. The record matrix numbers of his copy are: Side 1 - AL-31121-1B, Side 2 - BL-31121-1AE, Side 3 - AL-31122-1AA, Side 4 - BL-31122-1J. These labels have the album title on three lines but have differences in the position of the text compared to Gerd Rundel's promo release (variant 2).

Manuel García Jara has a copy with a gold embossed stamp on the rear sleeve "For Governmental Sale Only". The purpose of this is unclear, but this copy was probably for sale on US military bases in the USA and abroad. I have details of a copy of Blood On the Tracks with the same stamp. Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for finding a copy on eBay with a rear sticker from the US Navy, saying that the album is only for sale on Navy ships afloat - this was because the price did not include sales tax. I also have a picture of a 1971-72 release of Bringing It All Back Home with the same sticker.

Columbia KG 31120 (USA) - front with blue sticker and export sticker, photo from eBay
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding an export copy on eBay with the blue and white front sticker as above, but also a white "CBS" sticker with black text over the Columbia logo.

Columbia PG 31120 (USA), mid-1970s, re-released late 1970s and mid/late 1980s:

Columbia PG 31120 (USA) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (mid-1970s/late 1970s releases)

Gerd Rundel has a mid-1970s copy with "PG 31120" on the sleeve and record labels. The Sides 1 and 2 record labels have “PC 31121” to the left of the centre hole above “STEREO”, and the Sides 3 and 4 record labels have “PC 31122”.

Columbia PG 31120 (USA) - Side 1 scan by Gerd Rundel (mid-1970s release - album title again on three lines)

Columbia PG 31120 (USA) - detail of Side 1, scan by Gerd Rundel (mid-1970s release - "PC 31121" on second line)

Columbia PG 31120 (USA) - Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (mid-1970s release)

Columbia PG 31120 (USA) - Side 3 scan by Gerd Rundel (late 1970s release)

Columbia PG 31120 (USA) - detail of rear, scan by Gerd Rundel (mid-1970s/late 1970s releases)

The sleeve has no barcode on the rear, otherwise it looks the same as that of Jeremy Mayle's copy. The records of Gerd's mid-1970s copy have matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 31121-1AD ( all stamped), Side 2 - P BL-31121-1C (“P” handwritten, rest of matrix number is stamped), Side 3 - P AL-31122-1J (“P” handwritten, rest of matrix number is stamped), Side 4 - P BL-31122-1G (“P” handwritten, rest of matrix number is stamped).

Jeremy Mayle's late 1970s US copy also has "PG 31120" on the sleeve and labels. The rear sleeve now has a barcode. missing from Gerd Rundel's mid-1970s copy. The Sides 1 and 2 record labels of Jeremy Mayle's late 1970s copy have “C 31121” instead of “PC 31121”. This difference also exists on record 2 with “C 31122” instead of “PC 31122”. Gerd has now supplied scans of an identical late 1970s copy.

Columbia PG 31120 (USA) - Side 4 scan by Gerd Rundel (mid/late 1980s release)

The record labels of this mid/late 1980s release have the inverted triangle on Sides 1 and 3 to the left of the centre hole introduced with Biograph in 1985. The gatefold sleeve is the same as already listed for the mid 1970s/late 1970s releases. The records of the copy shown have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 31121 G1A, Side 2 - <B-X> BL 31121 G1C, Side 3 - (F-MP) AL-31122-G1A, Side 4 - (T-D) BL-31122 G1B.

These releases of the 2LP set come on a single tape cartridge. The first copy of this 8-track stereo release has a dark grey tape cartridge with two paper labels. The second copy has the same dark grey cartridge, but this time with a single wrap-around label. The Columbia House record club release is still sealed, but the tape inside looks to be the same as the regular 8-track release. The slipcase has cut-outs front and back to show the artwork and tracklist.

The track running order has been rearranged to make the four programmes of approximately equal length:

Program 1: Watching the River Flow; Lay, Lady, Lay; Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again; Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues

Program 2: All I Really Want To Do; My Back Pages; Maggie's Farm; She Belongs To Me; It's All Over Now, Baby Blue

Program 3: Don't Think Twice, It's All Right; Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You; Tomorrow Is A Long Time (live); When I Paint My Masterpiece; I Shall Be Released; Down In The Flood

Program 4: I'll Be Your Baby Tonight; All Along The Watchtower; Quinn The Eskimo (live); A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall; If Not For You; You Ain't Goin' Nowhere

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

"Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II" - single stereo cassette releases, Columbia GT 31120 (USA), early 1970s (two variants); Columbia PGT 31120 (USA), mid-1970s (three variants); Columbia CGT 31120 (USA), 1980s:

Columbia GT 31120 (USA), early 1970s (two variants):

Columbia GT 31120 (USA) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Gerd Rundel (early 1970s release variant 1)

The early 1970s single cassette release GT 31120 has a folded card insert with details of other contemporary Columbia cassette releases on the front and reverse including 1970's Self Portrait. The cassette has Dolby noise reduction and is light grey with black text, there are no paper labels. The cassette case has a "Columbia" sticker on the end. The catalogue number is also stamped on the top of the cassette. On Side 1 of the cassette Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again is abbreviated to just "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The".

Columbia GT 31120 (USA) - cassette Side 1 photocopy by Paul Shenton (early 1970s release variant 2 - Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again)

Columbia GT 31120 (USA) - cassette Side 1 photocopy by Paul Shenton (early 1970s release variant 2 - same as variant 1

Columbia GT 31120 (USA) - end of cassette case with sticker, scan by Gerd Rundel (early 1970s release variant 1)

Columbia GT 31120 (USA) - end of cassette case with same sticker, photocopy by Paul Shenton (early 1970s release variant 2)

Columbia GT 31120 (USA) - top of cassette, scan by Gerd Rundel (early 1970s release variant 1 - "GT 31120" stamped)

Columbia GT 31120 (USA) - top of cassette, photocopy by Paul Shenton (early 1970s release variant 2 - just "31120" stamped)

For some reason Paul Shenton's copy has a sticker with "CBS STEREO CASSETTE" covering the red/black text "DOUBLE TAPE VALUE SPECIALLY PRICED COLUMBIA STEREO CASSETTE" seen below on the insert for the 1975 release PGT 31120. The contemporary Columbia cassette releases on the front and reverse are the same as on the insert of Gerd Rundel's copy. On Side 1 of the cassette Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again is now listed in full, again as for the 1975 release PGT 31120.

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA), mid-1970s (variants 1 & 2):

These mid-1970s PGT 31120 releases again have a folded card insert with updated details of other contemporary Columbia cassette releases on the inside. These cassettes all have Dolby noise reduction and on Side 1 of the cassettes Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again is again listed in full.

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA) - detail of front of cassette insert, scan by Gerd Rundel (mid-1970s release variants 1-4 - 1980s release has same text)

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA) - inside of cassette insert, scan by Steven Fant (mid-1970s release variants 1 & 2 - included is Hard Rain, 1976, Dolby information at bottom right)

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA) - detail of cassette Side 1, scan by Steven Fant (mid-1970s release variant 2 - "MADE IN USA" at top right)

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA) - cassette Side 1 scan by Steven Fant (mid-1970s release variant 1 - off white paper labels)

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA) - cassette Side 2 scan by Steven Fant (mid-1970s release variant 1 - off white paper labels)

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA) - cassette Side 1 scan by Steven Fant (mid-1970s release variant 2 - textured cassette, no paper labels)

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA) - cassette Side 2 scan by Steven Fant (mid-1970s release variant 2 - textured cassette, no paper labels)

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA) - end of cassette insert, scan by Steven Fant (mid-1970s release variant 1)

Variants 1 and 2 come with identical inserts, the cassettes listed on the inside of each insert include Hard Rain from 1976. The inside of the insert has Dolby information at bottom right, not "Printed in U.S.A.". The variant 1 cassette is light grey with off-white paper labels. This copy has a sticker on the end of the cassette case. The variant 2 cassette is blue with black text, there are no paper labels. "MADE IN USA" is embossed on Side 1 at top right. This copy does not have a sticker on the end of the cassette case.

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA), mid-1970s (variants 3 & 4):

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Gerd Rundel (mid-1970s release variants 3 & 4)

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA) - inside of cassette insert, scan by Gerd Rundel (mid-1970s release variants 3 & 4 - included is The Basement Tapes by Bob Dylan and The Band, 1975, "Printed in U.S.A." at bottom right as GT 31120 insert above)

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA) - detail of cassette Side 2, scan by Gerd Rundel (mid-1970s release variant 3 - "MADE IN USA" at top right)

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA) - detail of cassette Side 1, scan by Gerd Rundel (mid-1970s release variant 4 - "MADE IN USA" vertically at centre right)

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA) - cassette Side 1 scan by Gerd Rundel (mid-1970s release variant 3 - textured cassette, no paper labels)

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA) - cassette Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (mid-1970s release variant 3 - textured cassette, no paper labels)

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA) - cassette Side 1 scan by Gerd Rundel (mid-1970s release variant 4 - smooth cassette, no paper labels)

Columbia PGT 31120 (USA) - cassette Side 2 scan by Gerd Rundel (mid-1970s release variant 4 - smooth cassette, no paper labels)

The variant 3 cassette has an insert which is the same as variants 1 and 2 on the outside. The inside of the insert includes The Basement Tapes by Bob Dylan and The Band from 1975, so it may actually be earlier than the variants 1 and 2 inserts. It also has "Printed in U.S.A." at bottom right like the GT 31120 inserts above. The cassette this time is light grey with black text, there are again no paper labels, so it is definitely later than variant 1."MADE IN USA" is embossed on Side 2 at top right. The variant 4 cassette comes with the same insert as variant 3 but this time has a smooth case, unlike variants 2 and 3. "MADE IN USA" is embossed vertically on Side 1 at centre right.

Columbia CGT 31120 (USA), 1980s:

Columbia CGT 31120 (USA) - outside of cassette insert, scan by Gerd Rundel (1980s release, inside is blank)

The 1980s release CGT 31120 has a smaller card insert with a barcode, blank on the inside.

There were two cassette variants with the same insert, both with Dolby noise reduction, there were again no paper labels. Both have the inverted triangle on Side 1 introduced for LPs and cassettes with Biograph in 1985.

The first cassette is light grey with black text, "MADE IN USA" is embossed at top right on Side 1. The second cassette is transparent smoked grey with white text, "MADE IN USA" is embossed at top right on Side 2.

"Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II" - stereo vinyl 2LP sets, Columbia KG 31120 (Canada), 17 Nov 1971, re-released ca. 1972; Columbia PG 31120 (Canada), ca. 1974, re-released mid-1970s:

Columbia KG 31120 (Canada), 17 Nov 1971:

Columbia KG 31120 (Canada) - front of gatefold sleeve, scan by Gerd Rundel (1971 and 1972 releases)
This original Canadian relerase comes what looks like an American KG 31120 gatefold sleeve with the US information obscured at the bottom of the rear in two places. It does however have "LITHO IN CANADA" and "KG 31120" printed on the spine.

The original 1971 Canadian labels use the 1960s style with the "360° SOUND" - "STEREO" logo in white. The record labels have "MANUFACTURED BY COLUMBIA RECORDS OF CANADA LTD." at the bottom.

Columbia KG 31120 (Canada) - Side 4 scan by Gerd Rundel (ca. 1972 release)

This second release has the same catalogue number and dates from around 1972, because it has the new style record labels with a ring of Columbia logos. The record labels again have “COLUMBIA RECORDS OF CANADA LTD”. The records of this copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-31121-1A, Side 2 - BL-31121-1B, Side 3 - AL-31122-1A, Side 4 - BL-31122-2A.

Columbia PG 31120 (Canada), ca. 1974:

Columbia PG 31120 (Canada) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (ca. 1974 release)

This third release has a new catalogue number and dates from around 1974, again with the new style record labels with a ring of Columbia logos. The front of the gatefold sleeve is the same as that of the mid 1970s copy but the printed text “CONTAINS 2 RECORDS / CONTIENT 2 DISQUES / SPECIAL LOW PRICE” is missing at top right. The rear has different copyright text at the bottom and this looks like a US sleeve. The US copyright text at the bottom of the rear sleeve has been obscured and overprinted with the Canadian copyright text. The spine has “LITHO IN CANADA” and “0998”, again presumably overprinted. The rear sleeve and record labels again have “COLUMBIA RECORDS OF CANADA LTD”. The records of this copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-31121-1A, Side 2 - BL-31121-1B, Side 3 - AL-31122-1A, Side 4 - BL-31122-2A.

Gord Pugh has a Canadian copy of the 2LP release where the catalogue number on the cover is PG 31120 but the discs are still KG 31120 as the ca. 1972 release above. It has a printed panel on the top right with the words "CONTAINS 2 RECORDS/ CONTIENT 2 DISQUES/ SPECIAL LOW PRICE" as shown for the mid-1970s copy below. This is a Canadian re-release that used the records from the earlier release in a reprinted sleeve. Derek Linfield has a copy of the same release where the catalogue number on the records is also KG 31120, again as the ca. 1972 release above.

Columbia PG 31120 (Canada), mid-1970s:

Columbia PG 31120 (Canada) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (mid-1970s release)

Manuel García Jara has a mid-1970s copy of Columbia PG 31120 with printed text “CONTAINS 2 RECORDS / CONTIENT 2 DISQUES / SPECIAL LOW PRICE” at top right. This promo copy has a gold embossed promo stamp on the rear of the gatefold sleeve. The text is in French and English: "PRETE propriete exclusive de / COPY ON LOAN ONLY remains property of / CBS". Both the rear sleeve and the record labels now have "CBS RECORDS CANADA LTD." instead of the earlier "COLUMBIA RECORDS OF CANADA LTD.". Columbia Records of Canada Ltd. was renamed CBS Records Canada Ltd. in late 1976, so this release is after then.

"Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II" - stereo vinyl 2LP sets, Columbia PG 31120 (Canada for export), mid-1970s:

Columbia PG 31120 (Canada for export) - front with sticker, scan by Lars M. Banke (mid-1970s release - first copy)

Lars M. Banke has two mid-1970s copies of Columbia PG 31120 bought in Sweden where the Columbia logos on the front sleeves have been covered by a black circular sticker. Unlike other copies of Canadian and US Columbia albums bought in Denmark around the same time, other Columbia logos on the sleeve have not been hidden - the rear sleeves are those shown above. On the first copy the record labels have no stickers and are as shown above.

Columbia PG 31120 (Canada for export) - Side 4 with black ring-shaped sticker, scan by Lars M. Banke (mid-1970s release - second copy)

On the second copy the records have black ring-shaped stickers on all labels as shown. The records of this copy have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 31121-1A, Side 2 - BL 31121-1B, Side 3 - AL 31122-1B, Side 4 - BL 31122-1A.

Columbia PG 31120 (Canada for export) - front scan by Lars M. Banke (mid-1970s release - third copy)
Lars has a third export copy where the sleeve has no stickers. Instead the instances of "Columbia" on the front and rear sleeve have been obscured with black marker pen. The records now have white ring-shaped stickers on the labels. The records have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 31121 1A, Side 2 - BL 31121 1B, Side 3 - AL 31122 1A, Side 4 - BL 31122 1B.

Columbia PG 31120 (Canada for export) - front scan by Lars M. Banke (mid-1970s release - fourth copy)
Lars' fourth export copy was bought in Sweden and has "Columbia" obscured in the upper left corner of the front sleeve and at the bottom of the rear sleeve with black marker pen. On the labels "Columbia" is also obscured with black marker pen (not stickers), but very sloppily executed. The handwritten matrix numbers are: Side 1 - AL-31121-1A, Side 2 - AL-31121-1B, Side 3 - AL 31122-1B 2 H D Z K, Side 4 - BL 31122 1A 2 H D K.

"More Bob Dylan Greatest Hits" - stereo vinyl 2LP sets and 8-track tape/cassette releases, CBS S 67239 (UK/Ireland), Dec 1971, re-released mid-1970s, early 1980s, mid/late 1980s:

Columbia 467851 2 (Europe) - front with sticker (1997 release, UK design, my UK-bought copy, but US tracklist)

This double album which is now listed here has a slightly different tracklist on Side 2 of Record 2 from the US release of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 2. Positively 4th Street and New Morning are included instead of She Belongs To Me and It's All Over Now, Baby Blue, both of which had already appeared on the first UK Greatest Hits album, from which Positively 4th Street had been inexplicably omitted.

The album with the UK title and tracklist was also released in Ireland, Holland, Italy, Portugal and Yugoslavia (the Greek release had the UK catalogue number but the US tracklist). Although the UK 2LP set was also released on 8-track tape cartridge and compact cassette, no CD reissues with the UK tracklist have ever been released. The 1997 UK CD release had the UK title but the US tracklist (see below for full listing).

Thanks to Manuel García Jara and Stuart Moore for information and scans.

CBS S 67239 (Portugal) - front scan by Manuel García Jara
These Portuguese albums are more releases of the 1971 UK More Bob Dylan Greatest Hits album with the same title and catalogue number (see above - strictly speaking they're versions of the Dutch mid-1970s release with the same front design with the title in a blue circle). For full details, see here. The mid-1970s and early 1980s releases have orange/yellow CBS labels and the set was re-released in the late 1980s with red CBS labels.

This compilation with the US tracklist was released only in two European countries: Spain and Greece, while in the rest of Europe it was released with the UK tracklist: UK, Ireland, Holland, Italy and Portugal. However, this Greek release surprisingly has the UK catalogue number, CBS S 62739! The Spanish release is CBS S 66287 (like in Israel). This 2LP set was made for Diski CBS Greece by "Music-box" of Athens and the gatefold sleeve was printed in Greece by Fotiadis & Ioannidis. In 1969 "Music-box" was described as "Exclusive Representative of CBS Records in Greece" (as here), by 1973 this had changed to "General Representative of CBS Records in Greece". This release has the usual gatefold sleeve, but it has no spine! Note the wrinkles caused when the gatefold was opened to be scanned. The outer sleeve has the front laminated but not the rear. The records have dark orange CBS labels and the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL 31121, Side 2 - BL 31121, Side 3 - AL 31122, Side 4 - BL 31122. The record labels have the logo of the Dutch copyright organisation B.I.E.M.

This set has the standard US tracklist. The gatefold sleeve is unusual because the inside photo is monochrome. Both the sleeve and the records were made in Israel. The catalogue number on the sleeve and spine is "S 66287", the same as the Spanish release below (the "S" is very hard to read on the front), but on the record labels it's just "66287". The records have orange CBS labels and stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - P AL 31121-1AA, Side 2 - P BL 31121-1AA, Side 3 - P AL 31122-1L, Side 4 - P BL 31122-1B.

These Japanese releases have the same track list and artwork as the US release.

The first release, CBS/Sony SONP 50450-51, has a card orange and white side obi with black and white text, showing price ¥3,600. This price is also printed on the rear and inside left of the gatefold sleeve. This release had an four-page double-sided insert with lyrics in English and Japanese. When I Paint My Masterpiece on Side 4 is wrongly listed as "When I Paint My Masterpice" on the rear of the gatefold sleeve, but is correct on the inside of the sleeve, the insert and the Side 4 record label. The records have orange/cream CBS/Sony labels.

This copy has the same sleeve as the 1976 Japanese release above with the same catalogue number, but with Hong Kong information on the left side of the inner sleeve instead of Japanese (see the detailed scans). There is a double-sided lyrics sheet in English, but no booklet as with the Japanese release. The records were made in Hong Kong and have red CBS/Sony labels, completely different from the Japanese labels. The records of the copy shown have stamped matrix numbers: Record 1 ~ Side 1 - 40 AP-282A2, Side 2 - 40 AP-282B2; Record 2 ~ Side 1 - 40 AP-283A2, Side 2 - 40 AP-283B3 (same as the Japanese copy above).

Early Australian release labels had the text "MADE IN AUSTRALIA BY A REGISTERED USER OF THE TRADE MARKS" without a CBS copyright. This is because up to 1977 all Australian records were manufactured by the Australian Record Company (Pty) Ltd. (A.R.C.) on behalf of CBS. A.R.C. changed its name to CBS Records Australia Limited on 17 Oct 1977, and after that date the longer bottom edge text includes the CBS copyright information. The longer copyright text round the bottom edge was used from 17 Oct 1977 onwards. (Stuart Moore says that the label change may not have occurred till late 1978 or early 1979, Bob Dylan At Budokan from 1978 still does not have a CBS copyright nor does Masterpieces, Slow Train Coming from 1979 does have the CBS copyright.)

The records of the mid-1970s release have orange/yellow new style CBS labels with the shorter copyright text. The mistakes from the first release are reinstated! On Side 1 Track 4 reverts to being listed as "Stuck Inside Of Memphis With Thee"! On Side 2 Tracks 2 and 3 again have no credits, and on Side 3 Track 2 again has no credits.

The records of the late 1970s release again have orange/yellow CBS labels, this time with the longer copyright text. The mistakes from the first release are repeated. On Side 1 Track 4 is yet again listed as "Stuck Inside Of Memphis With Thee". On Side 2 Tracks 2 and 3 still have no credits, and on Side 3 Track 2 still has no credits.

CBS 2PC 085 (Australia) - cassette Side 2 scan by Stuart Moore (alternate second release)

All releases shown have the same insert, blank on the reverse. The cassettes have white paper labels with black text. The text layout of the second cassette is different in several respects: the album title is now listed at the top, "STEREO" is on the left above the CBS logo instead of the right below the side number, and the album title below the sprocket holes is in a much smaller type face with "VOLUME II" in upper case instead of "Volume 2" in lower case. This is now the same format as the labels of the first CBS Australia cassette release of Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid in 1973. The third cassette shown has the same insert and labels as the second cassette, but the cassette itself is white, not grey.

The records of the first releases of this set have red CBS labels with three CBS logos, and have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - AL-31121  F 613, Side 2 - BL-31121  F 685 (should be 614?), Side 3 - AL-31122  F 615, Side 4 - BL-31122  F 616. There is no country of origin on the record labels or the sleeve. There are significant two differences between the two variants of labels with three CBS logos shown - the first variant has the album title on two lines and a catalogue number of  "KG 31120" with "C 31121/2" underneath, the second variant has the album title on one line and a catalogue number of "C 31121/2" with "KG 31120" underneath.

The second release has CBS/Sony labels on the records that were printed in Malaysia and are dated 1972. The eBay copy shown found by Gerd Rundel is a mixture of both releases, having record 1 with CBS/Sony labels printed in Malaysia, and record 2 with the CBS labels variant 2 and no country of origin. Scans of the missing record labels required!

This is a fourth release, released in the second half of the 1970s: it now has the CBS/Sony design of labels used for the first time in 1975 with Blood On The Tracks and The Basement Tapes. This 2LP set with gatefold sleeve now has the same catalogue number as in the USA and India, KCS 31120. The gatefold sleeve has the CBS/Sony logo on the front and the usual text in Malaysian/Singaporean records of this period: "Manufactured and distributed in Singapore by EMI (Singapore) PTE. "Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II" - stereo vinyl 2LP set, CBS KG 31120 (India), 1971 (two releases):

CBS KG 31120 (India) - front scan by Arie de Reus (first variant)
These rare releases were made in India by the Gramophone Company of India Limited, Dum Dum, India, a subsidiary of EMI (bought by Universal in 2012), for CBS Records. The inside of the gatefold sleeve is monochrome. The records have black/silver CBS labels. Manuel García Jara's copy has several differences from Arie de Reus' copy. The outside of the gatefold sleeve has the graphics printed higher as in the details shown. On the spine the "K" of "KG 31120" is missing and on the rear sleeve the first song title, Watching The River Flow, is actually printed on the top edge of the sleeve! The record labels are also significantly different - on the first set of labels the song publisher credits are listed next to each song title, on the second set of labels the song publisher credits are listed to the right of the centre hole. Also on Side 3 of the first record labels there is one song listed above the centre hole and two songs on Side 4, on the second set of labels there are no songs listed above the centre hole on Sides 3 and 4.

The "Vol. II" is omitted from the album title on the record labels of every release, and also on those of the Rhodesian release below!

The records of the 1971 copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - ASF 1644- AL-31121, Side 2 - ASF 1644- BL-31121, Side 3 - ASF 1645- AL-31122, Side 4 - ASF 1645- BL-31122. These numbers start with "ASF" whereas the Rhodesian matrix numbers below start with "ASFT" as the catalogue number.

The mid-1970s release again has the same sleeve as the 1971 release. This is a second edition of this album and the records again have plain orange CBS labels. The gatefold sleeve is identical to that of the first and third editions. The record labels have noticeable differences: see the album title is "BOB DYLAN'S GREATEST HITS" instead of "BOB DYLAN'S Greatest Hits". The tracklist text on the Side 1 record label has a different distribution over the lines of the title Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again from that of the first release. On the Side 2 record label the tracklist has five lines instead of four, but the text on the Sides 3 and 4 record labels are identical. The playing speed information ("33") is different on the Side 3 record label than it is on the Sides 1, 2 and 4 record labels. The records of the first mid-1970s copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - ASFT 1644-AL 31121-A, Side 2 - ASFT 1644-BL 31121-B, Side 3 - ASFT 1645-AL 31122-A, Side 4 - ASFT 1645-BL 31122.

CBS ASFT.1644/5 (South Africa) - front scan by Lars M. Banke (second mid-1970s release)

Lars M. Banke has a second mid-1970s release in the same sleeve printed by Interpak where the records have a third style of plain orange labels, the same as those of the Rhodesian release below. The playing speed is shown as "33 1/3", different from both earlier variants. This time the last line of the song titles on Side 1 is "WITH THE MEMPHIS BLUES AGAIN". The title distribution on the other record sides is also different.

The records have orange/yellow CBS labels (not introduced into South Africa until Street-Legal in 1978) similar in design to the mid-1970s record labels, although the playing speed is now missing. The records of the copy shown has matrix numbers: Side 1 - ASF 1644-AL 31121, Side 2 - ASFT 1644-5-BL 31121, Side 3 - ASFT 1644-5-AL 31122, Side 4 - ASFT 1644/5-BL 31122-1 (starting with "ASFT" this time).

CBS ASFT.1644/5 (Rhodesia), 1972:

CBS ASFT.1644/5 (Rhodesia) - front scan by Manuel García Jara
This album has the same gatefold sleeve as the South African release above, but with the printer name "Interpak" obscured on the rear. The plain orange CBS record labels are of noticeably poorer paper quality than the South African record labels. Like the South African releases above, the "Vol. II" is omitted from the album title on the record labels of this release. They have the third South African design (second mid-1970s release), with the album title all in capitals. The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - ASFT 1644- AL-31121-A, Side 2 - ASFT 1644- BL-31121, Side 3 - ASFT 1645- AL-31122, Side 4 - ASFT 1645- BL-31122.

CBS ASFT.1644/5 (Rhodesia) - front with sticker and sample stamp, scan by Gerd Rundel (late 1970s release, first Zimbabwe release is the same without the sticker)
The late 1970s Rhodesian release shown is a sample copy that comes in a regular flimsy cardboard sleeve that holds both records (not a gatefold sleeve). It has a “SAMPLE RECORD NOT FOR SALE” stamp plus a “SPECIAL PRICE SERIES 2LP SET” sticker on the front.

The "4-C2" on the rear sleeve means it was printed by Belmont Printers of Bulawayo. Belmont Printers used codes starting with "4" for sleeves they printed for CBS Records, they used other codes for other record companies.

The records have white CBS labels with blue text and the CBS logo in a box. The copy shown has handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - ASF 1644-AL 31121, Side 2 - ASF 1644-BL 31121, Side 3 - ASF 1645-AL 31122, Side 4 - ASFT 1644-5-BL 31122. It appears the matrix numbers on the first three sides are wrongly written “ASF” instead of ”ASFT”.

CBS ASFT.1644/5 (Zimbabwe), late 1980s (two releases):

CBS ASFT.1644/5 (Zimbabwe) - front scan by Gerd Rundel (second release)

The first later 1980s release from Zimbabwe has different style labels with the new CBS logo in red or green text (Down In The Groove from 1988 has this style of label). This came in the same flimsy sleeve as the late 1970s Rhodesian release, but without the sticker and sample stamp.

The copy of the second Zimbabwe release shown has a music shop sticker from "MUSIC", Old Mutual Arcade, Abercorn Street, at top right of the rear sleeve - there were Abercorn Streets in Salisbury (now Harare) and Bulawayo, but Old Mutual Arcade was in Harare. The rear sleeve has a different printer's name “4A TYPOCRAFTERS” at bottom right (as it has the "4A" code this may still be from Belmont Printers). The record labels have a completely different layout and red text (Oh Mercy from 1989 and Under The Red Sky from 1990 have this style of label, although in blue). The Side 2 label has “Night I'll Be Staying Here With You” instead of correctly “Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You”. The records of this copy again have handwritten matrix numbers: Side 1 - ASF 1644-AL 31121, Side 2 - ASF 1644-BL 31121, Side 3 - ASF 1645-AL 31122, Side 4 - ASFT 1644-5-BL 31122.

CBS S 66287 (Spain), 1972 release (COFASA):

CBS S 66287 (Spain) - front scan by Manuel García Jara (COFASA and CBS releases)
Even though the 1970 Spanish release of Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits had the 1967 UK tracklist (see here), this 2LP release had the US tracklist, so Positively 4th Street was missing from both albums. It has the US title on the front of the gatefold sleeve, but the Spanish title Grandes Exitos Vol. II on the spine. The gatefold sleeve was printed by Offset ALG of Madrid. The Discos CBS address is Calle Princesa 1, Madrid-13. The records were made in Spain by COFASA of Madrid for Discos CBS S.A. The inside of the gatefold sleeve has song titles in English and credits in Spanish. The records have orange CBS labels with song titles in English. The records of the copy shown have matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-31121-1H (stamped), Side 2 - PBL-31121-1F (stamped), Side 3 - P (handwritten) AL-31122-1J (stamped), Side 4 - PBL-31122-1AE (stamped).

The 1975 release had the same gatefold sleeve as the 1972 releases, this time with a pink sticker with black text "ALBUM 2 DISCOS PRECIO ESPECIAL [2 DISC ALBUM SPECIAL PRICE]". The 1975 records had orange/yellow CBS labels and were made by Discos CBS S.A. themselves. The 1975 records of the copy shown have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-31121-1H, Side 2 - PBL-31121-1F, Side 3 - PAL-31122-1L, Side 4 - PBL-31122-1AE.

CBS S 66287 (Spain), 1978 release:

CBS S 66287 (Spain) - Side 1 scan by Manuel García Jara (1978 release)
This 1978 release has the same sleeve as the 1972 to 1975 releases without a front sticker. This means the address of Discos CBS S.A. is still Calle Princesa 1, Madrid-13, when it should by now be Avenida del Generalísimo 25, Madrid-16.  However, Manuel García Jara says that it was normal for Discos CBS to reuse sleeves for double albums; for some reason, Blonde On Blonde never had a CBS address, and other double albums (Self Portrait and The Basement Tapes) always had the first CBS address (Calle Princesa 1, Madrid-1) even on the reissues of the 1980s and 1990s.

Side 4 scan by Manuel García Jara (1978 release)

The records again have orange/yellow CBS labels, but the labels of this copy are different - Sides 1 and 2 have the same labels as the 1975 release, while Sides 3 and 4 have a different text layout. The Sides 1 and 2 labels have text on three lines to the left of the centre hole, while the Sides 3 and 4 labels have text on four lines. Manuel thinks, as for the 1978 Spanish release of Self Portrait, CBS used sleeves and record 1s from stock and just ordered new copies of record 2! The 1978 records of the copy shown have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - PAL-31121-1H, Side 2 - PBL-31121-1F, Side 3 - PAL-31122-1L, Side 4 - 65287-10.

CBS S 66287 (Spain) - detail of fronts, scan by Manuel García Jara (1972, 1975 and 1978 releases on left, 1980 and 1986 releases on right)

The 1980 release has a new gatefold sleeve with a smaller CBS logo at front top left and a much thinner spine with smaller, hardly visible, text. Even though the sleeve has been redesigned, it still has the old Discos CBS S.A. address of Calle Princesa 1, Madrid-13, when it should by now be Paseo de la Castellana 93, Madrid-16!

The 1980 labels have reverted to the 1975 orange/yellow design! (The same situation occurs with the 1980 Spanish release of Self Portrait.) The records of the copy shown have stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 66287-1-A0, Side 2 - 66287-1-B0, Side 3 - 66287-C0, Side 4 - 65287-D.

CBS S 66287 (Spain) - front with sticker, scan by Lars M. Banke (early 1980s release)
This release with records with orange/yellow CBS labels must be later than the 1980 release shown because the STEREO arrows on the labels to the left of the centre hole are now absent. The front sleeve has a red circular sticker with "ALBUM 2 DISCOS/PRECIO ESPECIAL [2 RECORD SET/SPECIAL PRICE]".

CBS S 66287 (Spain) - front scan by Lars M. Banke (1986/late 1980s releases)

These releases have the same sleeve as the 1980 release, again with the old Discos CBS S.A. address of Calle Princesa 1, Madrid-13. The records have red CBS labels and the 1986 copy shown has stamped matrix numbers which are still: Side 1 - 66287-1-A0, Side 2 - 66287-1-B0, Side 3 - 66287-C0, Side 4 - 65287-D. These records were made by Discos CBS S.A. The late 1980s records come in the same sleeve and with red CBS labels, but the records were now made by Tecnodisco S.A. The late 1980s records have identical stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 66287-1-A0 Side 2 - 66287-1-B0, Side 3 -66287-C0, Side 4 - 65287-D.

"Grandes Exitos Vol. II [Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II]" - stereo cassette releases, CBS 40-66287 (Spain), 1976 (twice):

CBS 40-66287 (Spain) - outside of cassette 1 insert, scan by Manuel García Jara (first release)

These cassette releases came as two separate cassettes, although they were not sold separately. On the outside of the cassette side 1 insert the album title is given incorrectly as Grandes Exitos Vol. 1 - this was not subsequently corrected. The song titles are listed in English. The first release cassette inserts were printed by an unusual printer, Gráficas Dauco, and have the Discos CBS S.A. address of Calle Princesa 1, Madrid-13. The insides of the cassette inserts are the same for each cassette and list contemporary CBS Spain cassette releases.

The second release cassette inserts were printed by Indugraf of Madrid and have the new Discos CBS address of Avenida del Generalísimo 25, Madrid-16. The inside inserts of the second 1976 release are different from the first in that "OTROS CASSETTES CBS" has changed to "OTRAS CASSETTES CBS" and Desire is listed in the second column (it's missing from the list on the first release inserts).

The cassettes were identical for both releases and have white cases with orange CBS paper labels with titles in English.

"Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II" - stereo vinyl 2LP set, CBS/Sony LP-1565-66/40AP 282~3 (Philippines), 1980s:

CBS/Sony LP-1565-66 (Philippines) - front scan by Hans Seegers
This rare release is a variant of the 1976 CBS/Sony Japanese release CBS/Sony 40AP 282~3 (see above), manufactured in the Philippines under licence by Blackgold Records Corporation.

The records have red CBS/Sony labels with a yellow logo in a ring. This label design was not introduced until after 1981, before that Blackgold labels were blue/white. Gerd Rundel has spotted there is a spelling error for song title 4 on Side 1: “STUCK INSIDE OF MOBILE WITH THE MEMTHIS BLUES AGAIN”.

Lars M. Banke has two versions of this album (CBS/Sony LP-1565-66/40AP 282~3): one has a gatefold sleeve and the other does not. The front and rear sleeves are for both versions identical to the scans already shown. Also the record labels for both versions are identical to the scans already shown, including the spelling error.

Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits and Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits 2, the 1966 and 1967 Dutch compilations, were the only Dylan compilations released as vinyl LPs in the former Yugoslavia (both in 1982, see International Mono Releases - Dylan-Only Compilations 1960s). However, the worldwide compilations Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits and Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II/More Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, although never released there in vinyl, were released in Yugoslavia in tape format only. Manuel García Jara believes that these two compilations were the last Dylan albums ever released in the former Yugoslavia, in the early 1990s, only some months before the war. Both compilations were manufactured in what is now Slovenia by Radio TeleVisje Ljubljana (same as Under The Red Sky, RTVL-CBS KL 1958) and both have the European front but the US tracklist. Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits was RTVL-CBS KL-1936. This second volume (RTVL-CBS KL-1936) has the Dutch front with the title inside a blue circle. it comes on two cassettes, not one as many other worldwide releases, in a larger black plastic case that holds both cassettes.

Thanks to Manuel García Jara for information and scans.

CBS CDCBS 67239 (Europe) - front of booklet, scan by Peter Coulthard (1980s release)
These sets, which were manufactured in Austria for European distribution, have the US tracklist on CD2, even though they retain the UK front and title. For the original 1971 UK 2LP vinyl release with a different tracklisting (Positively 4th Street and New Morning instead of She Belongs To Me and It's All Over Now, Baby Blue, which had already appeared on the first UK Greatest Hits album), see here. As explained there, this means that She Belongs To Me and It's All Over Now, Baby Blue appear on each of the current CD versions of the first two UK Greatest Hits albums, while Positively 4th Street and New Morning are missing! Positively 4th Street is on Biograph, but New Morning appears now only on its own album for UK CD buyers.

The 1997 Columbia release is in a slimline 2CD jewel case.  It has a "Nice Price" front sticker with text "24-bit Digitally Remastered! Restored to original packaging!" It has a folded front insert as shown. Despite being described as being digitally remastered my CDs look exactly the same as Gerd Rundel's above.

with song title error - reverse is plain white)

Columbia 467851 2 (Europe) - CD1 (1997 release - same as 1990s release)

Columbia 467851 2 (Europe) - CD2 (1997 release - same as 1990s release)

Columbia 467851 2 (Europe) - rear scan by Jim Siddy (2000s release
with corrected song title)

Columbia 467851 2 (Europe) - centre of front insert booklet (1997 release)

Columbia 467851 2 (Europe) - detail of rear, scan by Jim Siddy (2000s release)

The 2000s copy from Jim Siddy has a completely different rear insert without the song title error and a stapled eight-page front insert including details of other Columbia albums. The CDs are the same as mine.

Thanks to Peter Coulthard and Jim Siddy for information and scans.
