Dylan & The Dead (1989)
|
This page is part of a list of original releases by release
date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums.
They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the
Searching For A Gem
list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing
here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo
releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former
yearly Promo sections.
For releases of this
album in CBS/Columbia multi-packs, see International
Album Releases (Regular) - Multi-Packs.

existing entries, please let me know!
Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities -
see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the

Revised
16 September, 2024.
The front sleeve design is a photograph of a graffiti wall by "Trotsky" found on a
New York street. Thanks to Steve Perrin for information that the mural had
previously been used by Tom Kimmel for the front of his 1987 Mercury single
Tryin' to Dance. The rear photo of Bob in the panama hat is credited to "Suzie
Q", presumably his dresser/wardrobe mistress Suzie Pullen. This album was remastered by Columbia in 1997 but that remastered edition
was
never released. Remastered versions of Shooting Star and Most Of The
Time from it appeared in 2000 on the Wonder
Boys and High Fidelity soundtrack albums respectively (for both see
Released Rarities).
However, this title is now one of the fifteen Dylan albums released in Sep
2003 as a hybrid CD/SA-CD. This is playable both in stereo on an ordinary CD
player and in enhanced stereo on an SA-CD player or a DVD player that also plays
SA-CDs (Sony's higher range models all do this). Some titles are available in
5.1 surround sound, but not this one. Thanks to Howard Tom for the information
that Most Of The Time has a fade-in start on the CD layer but a full-volume
start on the SA-CD layer.
Tracklist:
Side 1 - Political World; Where Teardrops Fall;
Everything Is Broken; Ring Them Bells; Man In The Long Black Coat
Side 2 - Most Of The Time; What Good Am I?; Disease Of
Conceit; What Was It You Wanted?; Shooting Star.
Out-takes from this album have been officially released as
follows:
Under The Red Sky (1990): Born In Time and God Knows were out-takes from Oh Mercy re-recorded
for the 1990 album
The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 (1991): Series Of Dreams.
For alternate and edited versions of this song, see 1991.
Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 3 (1994): Dignity -
remixed by Brendan O'Brien
Touched By An Angel: The Album (1998): Dignity
- original Oh Mercy out-take
produced by Daniel Lanois (R-0273, see 1998).
R-0273 was included on the 2000 European/Japanese Columbia compilations The
Best Of Bob Dylan Vol. 2, see 2000 and in
2007 on the 3CD compilation Dylan, so is no longer a rarity.
Apple iTunes Online Music Store (2003): Everything Is Broken
(alternate take with different lyrics R-0613, see
Online Performances
(Other))
R-0613 was released in Oct 2008 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs: Rare And Unreleased
1989-2006, see here. This
means it is no longer a rarity.
Chronicles Volume One 6 Song Sampler (2004): Dignity (previously
unreleased piano demo, R-0680, see 2004)
R-0680 was released in Oct 2008 on The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs: Rare And Unreleased
1989-2006, see here. This
means it is no longer a rarity.
The Bootleg Series Vol. 8 - Tell Tale Signs:
Rare And Unreleased 1989-2006 (2008): Dignity (previously unreleased
piano demo R-0679 as above); Most Of The Time (two alternate takes);
Born In Time (original version - two alternate takes); God Knows (original
version); Everything Is Broken (alternate take); Series Of Dreams (new alternate
take);
Dignity (alternate take to version released on Touched By An Angel: The Album, R-0273, see 1998);
Ring Them Bells (alternate take)
A live version of What Was It You Wanted? was included
in the July 2021 online video Shadow Kingdom, see
VHS & DVD 2020s.
These three discs belonged to a departed US collector who had
in the past contributed to my web-site. Before his death he sold off most of his
collection through Heritage Auctions, Dallas, TX, but there were some that
Heritage wouldn't sell because they didn't think they were authentic. His son is now
selling these on eBay and these are three of them. I have no doubt that the
original owner bought them in good faith and believed them to be genuine. The
seller claims they come from aborted first recording sessions for Oh Mercy
in the UK with Ronnie Wood, but I haven't found any evidence such sessions ever took
place.

"Oh Mercy"
- stereo vinyl LP, CBS 465800 1 (NL), Sep 1989:
CBS 465800 1 (NL) - front scan by Gerd Rundel |
The
Dutch record comes in a picture inner sleeve with the song titles and
musician credits on the front and a pattern on the reverse. There's a small
cut-out at the top of the rear of the Dutch inner sleeve which doesn't
appear to be present on the US and Australian inner sleeves. The record has
red CBS labels and stamped matrix numbers: Side 1 - 465800 20 1A1, Side 2 -
465800 20 1B1. Gerd Rundel's copy has "CB 291" in a lozenge below the bar
code at top right of the rear sleeve - on Tom Willems's copy this has been
covered with a sticker with "CB 321". Gerd Rundel has found a
misprint copy on eBay where the black text is missing from the Side 2 record
label - the sleeve and Side 1 label are normal.
Manuel
García Jara also has a Dutch copy
exported to West Germany with an accompanying black "Plattenpass [Record
Passport]" booklet describing the release.

The front sleeve is as shown, with no promo indication. The rear sleeve has two
gold promo stamps: a circular stamp
at top left with “PROMOCION – CBS – VENTA PROHIBIDA [PROMOTION – CBS – SALE
FORBIDDEN]”. At bottom left, is stamped in gold: “LOS SERVICIOS DE RADIODIFUSION

AFTER ANY BROADCAST (Art. 1º/Resolution 063/COMFER 83)]". "COMFER" means “Comité
Federal de Radiodifusión [Federal Broadcasting Committee]”. "83" refers to 1983,
the year that Resolution 063 was enacted.
The Side 1 record label has text
"DISCO PARA DEMOSTRACIÓN/VENTA PROHIBIDA" [DEMONSTRATION RECORD/NOT FOR SALE]"
printed at the top above the album title. This is missing on the Side 2 label.

Initial copies of the US release came in a "long box".
It was subsequently sold without the long box but the jewel case and the front
and rear inserts were the same for both editions. There
were two different CD variants: variant 1 has "DIDP 071892" ("DIDP" =
"Digital ID Popular") to the right of the centre hole below
the catalogue
number, but this is missing for variant 2. Variant 2 also has the copyright line at the bottom of the CD,
but the scanned image has a black rim hiding it.

Apparently this set was only available at performances by Wolfgang Niedecken in
Germany in Oct/Nov 2005 when he read excerpts from the audiobook (published
in Germany by Hoffman und Campe) and played Dylan songs. For the complete
Wolfgang Niedecken "Chronicles Volume One" audiobook, see
Honourable Mentions.

and Gerd Rundel for information and

"The Complete Album Collection Vol.
One" - 47CD boxed
set, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88691-92431-2 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe),
4 Nov 2013; USB stick,
Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88883-77314-5 (USA), 5 Nov 2013/(Europe),
4 Nov 2013; Sony Music SICP 30471-30520
(Japan), 26 Mar 2014 onwards:
This massive set is the latest in a series of "Complete Columbia Album
Collections" featuring artists such as Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, Duke
Ellington, Dave Brubeck and even Blue Oyster Cult. The CD version of the set includes 41 Dylan albums in card
sleeves, 14 of which have been remastered for this project, plus a 2CD set
of previously released non-album tracks entitled
Side Tracks. The albums exclude all compilations and
The Bootleg Series sets, but do include the deleted 1973 Dylan album,
also see 1973, and the extra 2CD set
Side Tracks includes one side of the 1971 single George
Jackson (Acoustic version),
R-0085, see
1971. The set is
therefore listed in 2013.
The set also includes a hard cover book with extensive new liner notes and
previously unseen photos.
All the CDs come in card sleeves. The European sleeves are made of thicker
card than the US sleeves, but they are otherwise identical, so are not shown.
The catalogue number on the sleeve is "88691924312JK31"
plus "DISC 35". The CDs are different in detail, the US
Oh Mercy CD has
catalogue number "88691924312D35", whereas
the European CD has catalogue number "88691924312-35". The European CD was made in the EU (probably Austria).
The US and European copyright details are printed at the bottom of the Bob Dylan CDs,
and round the circumference for The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan onwards, so I
haven't shown them for the later CDs.
For more
details of the set, see
International Album Releases (Multi-Packs) 2010s.
