Revised 16 September, 2024.
Release date of 6CD Limited Deluxe edition: 4
Nov 2014 (USA), 3 Nov 2014 (Europe/Australia/New Zealand), 19 Nov 2014 (Japan). There are 139 tracks in all. Neither of the books supplied with the Complete Edition include the song-by-song commentary for discs 1-5 by Ben Rollins, which was available for download from bobdylan.com after 4 Nov 2014. Ben Rollins has worked extensively on researching the source tapes. He was an associate producer of Bob's "Theme Time Radio Show", and wrote the foreword to the "Time Passes Slowly" book included with the The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) Deluxe Limited Edition. The booklet with the Raw Edition does contain his commentaries for the 38 tracks in that set. Release date of regular 2CD edition: 4 Nov 2014 (USA), 3 Nov 2014 (Europe/Australia/New Zealand), 19 Nov 2014 (Japan). The 2 CDs contain 38 tracks. Release date of limited vinyl 3LP edition: 16 Nov 2014 (USA), 15 Nov 2014 (Europe), also with 38 tracks. For a 15-track promo Sampler CD release and a radio broadcast CD-R, see International Album Releases (Dylan-Only Compilations) 2010s. |

MGM 11309 (USA, 1953) - 12" single A-side (original 78 RPM release), picture from www.discogs.com |
*The credit to "Benjamin Lee Blankenship" for this song is bizarre because it was definitely written by Bonnie Dodd for Hank Williams, who recorded it under his pseudonym of "Luke The Drifter" in 1953. According to Wikitree, "Bonnie Modeana Dodd (1914-84) was a Country and Western musician, singer, and songwriter once known as "Little Blossum". For many years she played the steel guitar in Tex Ritter's band. One of her songs he recorded was You Will Have to Pay. Many of her songs were recorded by top Country and Western artists of her day. Over the years she was associated with Hank Williams (she wrote his song Be Careful of Stones That You Throw), Stuart Hamblen, Charles Mitchell, Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubbs, Jimmie Davis (later governor of Louisiana), the Carter family, Jimmie Wakely, Slim Whitman, the Wilburn Brothers and Dion. She sang I Dreamed of an Old Love Affair with Jimmy Davis and wrote If It's Wrong to Love You with Charles Mitchell and it was recorded by Jimmy Dean, Willie Nelson, and Hank Snow and Anita Clark. According to her sister, Pearl, Bonnie also had a part in writing the song You Are My Sunshine by Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell. She also co-wrote I Dreamed of an Old Love Affair with Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell." As can be seen, the original 1953 MGM Luke The Drifter 78 RPM single has the song credited to "Dodd", as do later releases. |
MGM K11309 (USA) - 7" single A-side (later 45 RPM release), picture from www.discogs.com |
Apparently the song credits for this release were cleared by Sony Music, not Bob's office, and there is a much later (and much less known) song with the same name written by a Benjamin Lee Blankenship. This isn't the first time this has happened! See here for a note about writer credits for A Fool Such As I from the 1973 Dylan album, actually written by Bill Trader, but often wrongly credited by Columbia to Buford Abner.

and the acoustic guitar are on the right channel with the voice at the
extreme right, the organ and the bass are on the left, very prominent;
on the 2014 BS 11 CD3 Bob's voice and the acoustic guitar are more to
the middle, they sound clearer and more prominent than in the 2007 mix;
the organ and especially the bass on the left are less prominent than in
the 2007 mix

Vinyl 3LP Releases
Bob Dylan/The Band - "The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 - The Basement Tapes Raw" - heavyweight vinyl 3LP sets, Columbia/Legacy 88875016131 (USA), 22 Nov 2014; Columbia/Legacy 88875016131 (Europe), 21 Nov 2014:
Columbia/Legacy 88875016131 (USA) - test pressing:
Thanks to Gerd Rundel for finding a test pressing of the US 3LP set. These audiophile grade discs were pressed at United Records in Nashville (Record 2 has United labels, the other two have blank labels). The discs are all housed in generic red card sleeves. Matrix numbers for the three discs are as follows: Side 1 - 8887501613 - A STERLING RKS U, Side 2 - 8887501613 - B STERLING RKS U, Side 3 - 8887501613 - C STERLING RKS U, Side 4 - 8887501613 - D STERLING RKS U, Side 5 - 8887501613 - E STERLING RKS U, Side 6 - 8887501613 - F STERLING RKS U. "STERLING RKS" means that the discs were mastered at Sterling Sound, Edgewater, NJ, by chief engineer Ryan K. Smith.

The European 3LP set was added first, and therefore full details are below. The differences between that and the 3LP US set are listed here: like the European release, the U.S.A. 3LP set comes in a thick card 12” x 12” slipcase. The front is the same, but it does not have the black front sticker nor are there signs that it was affixed to the shrink-wrap. On the rear of the slipcase, the barcode and the number are the same, but under “Printed in U.S.A.”, the copyright text has one line only.
This box includes:
A 56-page booklet in 12” x 12” format, with hard paper front and rear.
Advertisement flyer announcing the upcoming album Shadows In The Night (at rear top right, the number is “88875016122I1”).
Three 180 gm LPs, each housed in a different cut-out card, but all inner sleeves are the same (plain green cut-out, but with “1RAW10486SV1” at the rear bottom centre of each one). The rear of each outer sleeve is the same as the front, except for the copyright details. The record labels reproduce contemporary test pressing designs too.
Two CDs in card sleeves, catalogue numbers “88875019672D1” (but “88875916131JK4” on the bottom right rear card sleeve) and “88875919672D2” (but “88875016131JK5” on the bottom right rear card sleeve). The copyright text is in five lines. Both reproduce contemporary tape box designs too.
The records of this copy have handwritten numbers: Side 1 (A) - 88875016131-A, Side 2 (B) - 88875016131-B, Side 3 (C) - 88875016131-C (plus “U” in a circle, faintly handwritten), Side 4 (D) - 88875016131-D (plus “U” in a circle, faintly handwritten), Side 5 (E) - 88875016131-E, Side 6 (F) - 88875016131-F. The vinyl of sides 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 also has “STERLING” stamped and “RKS” handwritten, but not Side 4. This means the records were mastered in the USA at Sterling Sound, Edgewater, NJ, by their senior engineer Ryan K. Smith, as were the records of the Side Tracks 3LP set, Nov 2013, see 2013, and the records of The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), 2013.
This American package does not have the Sony Music logo anywhere, and has printed “Made in U.S.A.” only. Both spines of the slipcase and the three cut-out outer card sleeves are the same as the European release below.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel and Sergio Mariano Romay for information and scans.
Bob Dylan/The Band - "The Basement Tape" - mono vinyl LP releases, Other People's Music OPM 261-281 (Canada)/Columbia/Legacy 88875064261-281 (USA), 18 Apr 2015:
Thanks to Michel Pomarede for pointing out that the 200gm pink vinyl edition is OPM 281, the 180gm black vinyl edition is OPM 271, and the 130gm black vinyl edition is OPM 261.
As part of Record Store Day on 18 Apr 2015 in the USA and UK (also Holland) there were vinyl releases of The Basement Tape signed by Garth Hudson, available in mono only. They reproduce the original 1968 Emidisc UK 14 track test pressing LP, reportedly the source of the songs made available to UK groups such as Manfred Mann (The Mighty Quinn), The Brian Auger Trinity/Julie Driscoll (This Wheel's On Fire), Fairport Convention (Million Dollar Bash), etc., see 1968. None of the tracks were thought to be rarities, but Peter Coulthard points out that at the start of This Wheel's on Fire Bob is heard to sing/mumble softly "If your mem'ry serves you well..." This fragment of singing ahead of the first strummed note does not occur on the 6CD set The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 - The Basement Tapes Complete. so these albums have been added to 2015 as containing a rarity.

Other People's Music OPM 261 (Canada)/Columbia/Legacy 88875064261 (USA), 18 Apr 2015 (130gm black vinyl edition):
The 130gm black vinyl release again has a blue wraparound obi-style sleeve. The hand stamped text is now in black. Garth Hudson's signature is again stamped. The copies have been hand numbered in black with "2,500" stamped in red. The record labels have the same text and catalogue number as those of the 200gm pink vinyl and 180gm black vinyl editions. This edition also has the same pink "Rolling Stone" insert.
Thanks to Arie de Reus, Steven Fant, Bruce Mulle and Peter Coulthard for information and pictures.

Gerd Rundel has found a set of six promo CD-Rs on eBay that are dated "2014-11-19". These are numbered SDCI 81709 to 81714.
Sonny Boy McFitzson has two of the magazines illustrated in the "Lo & Behold" book, "The Dig" No 11, Mar/Apr 1997, from page 102, which has a translation of the well-known interview with Bob, Happy Traum & John Cohen from "Sing Out!" magazine, also "Record Collector's Magazine" Vol. 17, #6, Jun 1998.
There is also a Japanese language booklet. The last page of this has text:
Track 22 on CD6 (omitted from all the US/European sets) is listed here as "900 Miles from My Home/Confidential"!

The 2CD set made in the EU again comes inside a card slipcase with a bound booklet, a smaller version of the hardback disc book in the Complete edition with notes by Sid Griffin, Ben Rollins and Jan Haust (the liner notes by Ben Rollins are from bobdylan.com, but here only for the 38 tracks on the 2 CDs). The notes by Clinton Heylin ("What's Reel & What's Not) from the 6CD release are not included. There is a black sticker with white text on the front of the slipcase attached to the shrink-wrap with catalogue number "88875019672" (the US sticker also has "S1"). The two discs are in a single-width 2CD jewel case with a folded front insert. The picture on the front of the insert is of an Emidisc "test pressing" that was for sale on eBay some time ago, and was previously listed on the 1968 Rarities page. Inside the slipcase is also a small flyer (3½" x 3½") for the upcoming Bob Dylan album Shadows In The Night (the equivalent flyer in the 6CD set is 7" x 7"). The rear of the flyer has catalogue number "88875019672" (the US small flyer has a completely different number). A picture of Arie de Reus' acetate of I Shall be Released was used for the front insert of this 2CD release, see 1968. |
