The Bootleg Series Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) (2013)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

Shadows In The Night (2015)

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Revised 16 September, 2024.

Release date of 6CD Limited Deluxe edition: 4 Nov 2014 (USA), 3 Nov 2014 (Europe/Australia/New Zealand), 19 Nov 2014 (Japan).
There are 139 tracks in all. Neither of the books supplied with the Complete Edition include the song-by-song commentary for discs 1-5 by Ben Rollins, which was available for download from bobdylan.com after 4 Nov 2014. Ben Rollins has worked extensively on researching the source tapes. He was an associate producer of Bob's "Theme Time Radio Show", and wrote the foreword to the "Time Passes Slowly" book included with the The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971) Deluxe Limited Edition. The booklet with the Raw Edition does contain his commentaries for the 38 tracks in that set.

Release date of regular 2CD edition: 4 Nov 2014 (USA), 3 Nov 2014 (Europe/Australia/New Zealand), 19 Nov 2014 (Japan). The 2 CDs contain 38 tracks.

Release date of limited vinyl 3LP edition: 16 Nov 2014 (USA), 15 Nov 2014 (Europe), also with 38 tracks.

For a 15-track promo Sampler CD release and a radio broadcast CD-R, see International Album Releases (Dylan-Only Compilations) 2010s.

The cover picture is a photo taken at Woodstock by Elliot Landy, who took most of the photos in these releases.

Tracklist of the 6CD "Complete" set (30 of these tracks have never been available on bootlegs). Tracks also on the 2CD "Raw" set are in green, followed by the CD and track number.

MGM 11309 (USA, 1953) - 12" single A-side (original 78 RPM release), picture from www.discogs.com
*The credit to "Benjamin Lee Blankenship" for this song is bizarre because it was definitely written by Bonnie Dodd for Hank Williams, who recorded it under his pseudonym of "Luke The Drifter" in 1953. According to Wikitree, "Bonnie Modeana Dodd (1914-84) was a Country and Western musician, singer, and songwriter once known as "Little Blossum". For many years she played the steel guitar in Tex Ritter's band. One of her songs he recorded was You Will Have to Pay. Many of her songs were recorded by top Country and Western artists of her day. Over the years she was associated with Hank Williams (she wrote his song Be Careful of Stones That You Throw), Stuart Hamblen, Charles Mitchell, Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubbs, Jimmie Davis (later governor of Louisiana), the Carter family, Jimmie Wakely, Slim Whitman, the Wilburn Brothers and Dion. She sang I Dreamed of an Old Love Affair with Jimmy Davis and wrote If It's Wrong to Love You with Charles Mitchell and it was recorded by Jimmy Dean, Willie Nelson, and Hank Snow and Anita Clark. According to her sister, Pearl, Bonnie also had a part in writing the song You Are My Sunshine by Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell. She also co-wrote I Dreamed of an Old Love Affair with Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell." As can be seen, the original 1953 MGM Luke The Drifter 78 RPM single has the song credited to "Dodd", as do later releases.
MGM K11309 (USA) - 7" single A-side (later 45 RPM release), picture from www.discogs.com

Apparently the song credits for this release were cleared by Sony Music, not Bob's office, and there is a much later (and much less known) song with the same name written by a Benjamin Lee Blankenship. This isn't the first time this has happened! See here for a note about writer credits for A Fool Such As I from the 1973 Dylan album, actually written by Bill Trader, but often wrongly credited by Columbia to Buford Abner.

Thanks to Jean-Pol Hiernaux for pointing out that this track has been remixed, although it doesn't say so anywhere in the packaging of either the 6CD set or the 2CD set. On the 2007 version (R-0837), Bob's voice and the acoustic guitar are on the right channel with the voice at the extreme right, the organ and the bass are on the left, very prominent; on the 2014 BS 11 CD3 Bob's voice and the acoustic guitar are more to the middle, they sound clearer and more prominent than in the 2007 mix; the organ and especially the bass on the left are less prominent than in the 2007 mix

Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin and Fred Muller for information about the "hidden track" on CD6! Thanks to Moise Potié for reminding me that, although the alternate take of Confidential was previously uncirculating, the alternate take of 900 Miles From My Home was included on bootlegs such as The Genuine Basement Tapes and A Tree With Roots.

The unreleased track Can I Get A Racehorse, also known as You Own A Racehorse, is not in this collection because the tape on which it was recorded was reportedly overwritten! Other missing songs that are listed in "Isis" 176 are Chilly Winds (now identified by Tim Dunn as Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad on CD6); Still In Love With You; Born In Bethlehem; Down In The Hollow; Any Time*; Hey Good Lookin' (the Hank Williams song); Hey Bob Diddley (Hey Bo Diddley); Dumb Diddy Dumb; I'm So Glad About It; On The Avenue; Work With Me, Annie (the Hank Ballard #1); Catfish Blues (recorded by musicians such as John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters and Jimi Hendrix) plus three "cowboy" songs: Josey Wales; Mona Marola; Lesita Marolla. Also, two takes of Jelly Bean are known, but only one appears on CD6. The 6CD set also does not include any instrumental jams, such as the copyrighted Cellar Instrumental #1, widely bootlegged as Even A Tomato or Just Another Tomato In The Glass.

Apple 94637 69002 (UK) - front of boxed set (2001 2CD release, my copy)
*I suspect this is a version of the song I'd Have You Any Time recorded with George Harrison at Woodstock, New York State, Nov 1968. George's officially released solo version is on his 3LP set All Things Must Pass, Apple, 1970 (2CD release, 2001). The limited edition boxed set of the Martin Scorsese documentary "George Harrison: Living In The Material World", released in the UK by Lions Gate Entertainment on 10 Oct 2011, includes an early version of I'd Have You Any Time on a bonus CD, now released separately in May 2012 as Early Takes Volume 1.

The European 3LP set was added first, and therefore full details are below. The differences between that and the 3LP US set are listed here: like the European release, the U.S.A. 3LP set comes in a thick card 12” x 12” slipcase. The front is the same, but it does not have the black front sticker nor are there signs that it was affixed to the shrink-wrap. On the rear of the slipcase, the barcode and the number are the same, but under “Printed in U.S.A.”, the copyright text has one line only.

This box includes:

The records of this copy have handwritten numbers: Side 1 (A) - 88875016131-A, Side 2 (B) - 88875016131-B, Side 3 (C) - 88875016131-C (plus “U” in a circle, faintly handwritten), Side 4 (D) - 88875016131-D (plus “U” in a circle, faintly handwritten), Side 5 (E) - 88875016131-E, Side 6 (F) - 88875016131-F. The vinyl of sides 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 also has “STERLING” stamped and “RKS” handwritten, but not Side 4. This means the records were mastered in the USA at Sterling Sound, Edgewater, NJ, by their senior engineer Ryan K. Smith, as were the records of the Side Tracks 3LP set, Nov 2013, see 2013, and the records of The Bootleg Series, Vol. 10 - Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), 2013.

This American package does not have the Sony Music logo anywhere, and has printed “Made in U.S.A.” only. Both spines of the slipcase and the three cut-out outer card sleeves are the same as the European release below.

Columbia/Legacy 88875016131 (Europe):

The European 3LP set comes in a thick card 12" x 12" slipcase including:

  • Three 180 gm LPs, each housed in a different cut-out card sleeve but all inner sleeves are the same (plain green cut-out). The rear of each outer sleeve is the same as the front except for the copyright details. The record labels reproduce contemporary test pressing designs

  • Two CDs in card sleeves, catalogue numbers "88875016131CD1" and "88875016131CD2". The card sleeves reproduce contemporary tape box designs

  • 56-page booklet in 12” x 12” format

  • Advertisement flyer announcing the upcoming album Shadows In The Night.

Bob Dylan/The Band - "The Basement Tape" - mono vinyl LP releases, Other People's Music OPM 261-281 (Canada)/Columbia/Legacy 88875064261-281 (USA), 18 Apr 2015:

Thanks to Michel Pomarede for pointing out that the 200gm pink vinyl edition is OPM 281, the 180gm black vinyl edition is OPM 271, and the 130gm black vinyl edition is OPM 261.

As part of Record Store Day on 18 Apr 2015 in the USA and UK (also Holland) there were vinyl releases of The Basement Tape signed by Garth Hudson, available in mono only. They reproduce the original 1968 Emidisc UK 14 track test pressing LP, reportedly the source of the songs made available to UK groups such as Manfred Mann (The Mighty Quinn), The Brian Auger Trinity/Julie Driscoll (This Wheel's On Fire), Fairport Convention (Million Dollar Bash), etc., see 1968. None of the tracks were thought to be rarities, but Peter Coulthard points out that at the start of This Wheel's on Fire Bob is heard to sing/mumble softly "If your mem'ry serves you well..."  This fragment of singing ahead of the first strummed note does not occur on the 6CD set The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 - The Basement Tapes Complete. so these albums have been added to 2015 as containing a rarity.

Other People's Music OPM 281 (Canada)/Columbia/Legacy 88875064261 (USA), 18 Apr 2015 (200gm pink vinyl edition):

Other People's Music OPM 281 (Canada)/ Columbia/Legacy 88875064281 (USA) - front with wraparound sleeve, photo by Steven Fant (200gm pink vinyl edition)
The pink vinyl release has a pink wraparound obi-style sleeve with the track list and other information inside a thin clear polythene sleeve. On the 180gm and 130gm versions below this wraparound sleeve is blue. The record has white "Emidisc" labels with a "stained" appearance reproducing one variant of the 1968 acetate, but with some song titles corrected. The copies shown are numbered #124, #218 and #220. They have been hand-numbered in black with "1,000" stamped in red.

It states on the labels that the album was released by Other People's Music Inc., Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Each version of the album also has a pink insert with a reproduction of the article by Jann Wenner in the US magazine "Rolling Stone", 22 Jun 1968, entitled "DYLAN'S BASEMENT TAPE SHOULD BE RELEASED". Now it has been, exactly as first released in 1968.

Bruce Mulle points out that the Garth Hudson signature on the pink vinyl edition is slightly raised, whereas the hand-stamped signatures on the black vinyl editions are smooth. Steven Fant confirms this and thinks that Garth signed the copies using a calligraphy pen with thick black ink.

The first book has notes by Sid Griffin, Clinton Heylin, Ben Rollins and Jan Haust. Inside the package is also a large flyer (7" x 7") for the upcoming Bob Dylan album Shadows In The Night. CD6 is called a "Bonus Disc" because the quality of the recordings is poorer than that of CDs 1-5.

Thanks to Gerd Rundel for scans of a six promo postcard set from Sony Music Germany. The set includes a promo postcard flyer and 5 promo postcards with photos made by Elliott Landy. The promo postcard flyer has text “OBACHT: AB 31.10.! [ATTENTION: FROM 31.10.!]”). The rear of all promo postcards (right) is the same.

The Japanese Complete release, Sony Music SICP 30721-6, is on Blu-spec CD2 discs. The Sony Music Japan 6CD Limited Deluxe Edition comes in an outer card sleeve with no top and bottom, not a heavy card slipcase like the US/European releases. The two books were made in the USA. The price is ¥20,000 (without sales tax), the release date "14-11-19" (19 Nov 2014), the US release date "14-11-4" (4 Nov 2014). The CDs were made in Japan and protected in clear plastic shaped sleeves. They are in the new "Blu-spec CD2" high quality audio format currently exclusive to Japan, and the set also contains a double-sided flyer advertising the Blu-spec CD2 format. However, the Shadows In The Night flyer isn't included.

Gerd Rundel has found a set of six promo CD-Rs on eBay that are dated "2014-11-19". These are numbered SDCI 81709 to 81714.

Sonny Boy McFitzson has two of the magazines illustrated in the "Lo & Behold" book, "The Dig" No 11, Mar/Apr 1997, from page 102, which has a translation of the well-known interview with Bob, Happy Traum & John Cohen from "Sing Out!" magazine, also "Record Collector's Magazine" Vol. 17, #6, Jun 1998.

There is also a Japanese language booklet. The last page of this has text:

Track 22 on CD6 (omitted from all the US/European sets) is listed here as "900 Miles from My Home/Confidential"!

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for information and scans.

Standard Edition 2CD Releases

Bob Dylan/The Band - "The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 - The Basement Tapes Raw" - 2CD sets, Columbia/Legacy 88875019672 (USA), 4 Nov 2014; Columbia/Legacy 88875019672 (Australia/New Zealand), 8 Nov 2014:

Columbia/Legacy 88875019672 (USA) - front of slipcase with sticker, scan by Stuart Moore
Bill Hester in New Zealand and Stuart Moore in Australia have sent scans simultaneously of the US 2CD release, which is unusually being sold in their countries instead of a unique Australian release.

The 2CD set made in the USA comes inside a card slipcase with a bound booklet, a smaller version of the hardback disc book in the Complete edition with notes by Sid Griffin, Clinton Heylin, Ben Rollins and Jan Haust. There is a black sticker with white text on the front of the slipcase attached to the shrink-wrap with catalogue number "88875019672S1". The two discs are in a single-width 2CD jewel case with a folded front insert. Inside the slipcase is also a small flyer (3½" x 3½") for the upcoming Bob Dylan album Shadows In The Night (the equivalent flyer in the 6CD set is 7" x 7"). The rear of the flyer has catalogue number "1RAW10484I1" (the European small flyer has a completely different number).

Columbia/Legacy 88875019672 (Canada) - front of slipcase, scan by Gerd Rundel
The Canadian 2CD release is virtually identical to the US release above: the slipcase looks the same as the US release, but has a transparent "MADE IN USA" sticker above the barcode on the rear (difficult to see!); both CDs have Canadian copyright information.

Bob Dylan/The Band - "The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 - The Basement Tapes Raw" - 2CD set, Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 88875019672 (Europe), 3 Nov 2014:

Columbia/Legacy/ Sony Music 88875019672 (Europe) - front of slipcase with sticker, scan by Jean-Pol Hiernaux

The 2CD set made in the EU again comes inside a card slipcase with a bound booklet, a smaller version of the hardback disc book in the Complete edition with notes by Sid Griffin, Ben Rollins and Jan Haust (the liner notes by Ben Rollins are from bobdylan.com, but here only for the 38 tracks on the 2 CDs). The notes by Clinton Heylin ("What's Reel & What's Not) from the 6CD release are not included. There is a black sticker with white text on the front of the slipcase attached to the shrink-wrap with catalogue number "88875019672" (the US sticker also has "S1"). The two discs are in a single-width 2CD jewel case with a folded front insert. The picture on the front of the insert is of an Emidisc "test pressing" that was for sale on eBay some time ago, and was previously listed on the 1968 Rarities page. Inside the slipcase is also a small flyer (3½" x 3½") for the upcoming Bob Dylan album Shadows In The Night (the equivalent flyer in the 6CD set is 7" x 7"). The rear of the flyer has catalogue number "88875019672" (the US small flyer has a completely different number).

A picture of Arie de Reus' acetate of I Shall be Released was used for the front insert of this 2CD release, see 1968.
