The book included with the Deluxe Edition has four missing pages from Bob's 1974 ring-bound notebook because of a printing error. The missing pages can be found here: As can be seen on left, some copies have badly cut pages! Thanks to Fred Muller and Bob Meyer for news that the 1974 Blood On The Tracks test pressing will be released on vinyl on Record Store Day, 13 Apr 2019. This will be an exact reproduction of the 1974 disc with the original mixes (not included on the Deluxe Edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 - More Blood, More Tracks in 2018, almost certainly deliberately) and be limited to 7500 copies worldwide. This will be the first time that the award-winning liner notes by Pete Hamill will actually describe the takes that are on the album! As the original mixes are rarities, this album is listed in 2019. |
Thanks also to Harald Sigvartsen and Per Jakobsen for comments on the tracks and the books. Harald Sigvartsen says: "And now to the pictures In The “Stories from the press” book. – As you may have suspected, I do really closely read text and inspect the pictures of these releases. In the “Stories…” book I found some pictures worth mentioning. The pictures on pages 78 and 79 of this book must be from the photo sessions from which the covers of the above-mentioned Australian and Swedish best-of releases have their pictures. There are also further pictures In The CD-book which clearly must be from the same photo sessions, they are throughout this book, - on the pages 22, 27, 30, 33, 40 and also (in black/white) on page 34. I hope this is also worth pointing out. (It should be mentioned here that the single disc booklet have some of these pictures. On the pages 10, 16, 20, and, the b/w picture, on page 25.) There is a picture of a “Rolling Stone” magazine on page 33 of the “Stories..” book that is repeated on page 35. On page 35 this picture is cropped, but it is actually the very same picture. Should this be mentioned on your site?"
Harald Sigvartsen adds: Idiot Wind is perhaps Dylan’s most cathartic song outside the songs released In The 1960s (such as Like A Rolling Stone and Positively 4th Street), and it’s a song that has been released in various versions also officially. My personal favorite is the live version from the Hard Rain album. Idiot Wind (Take 4, Remake) is track 9 on the single disc version and also track 9 (by coincidence, I think) on CD4 of the box set. The booklet for the Standard Edition and the book In The Deluxe Edition says that this is the raw version without organ overdub. This is almost correct. There is a little misinformation here. The version used on the Deluxe Edition has 23 seconds of “studio chatter” at the beginning which is not mentioned In The book (making the song’s length 9.14 in total). The version on the single disc is 8.51, and thus without this “studio chatter”. This means that the version on the single disc edition of The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 is exclusive to this release. Maybe worth pointing out?
The next issue is also regarding Idiot Wind. I have not heard the original test pressing of Blood On The Tracks, so I can’t say I know by my own ears what’s what on the matter here. I have checked closely the labels for the test pressing, and they don’t give anything away in terms of useful information. I have, though, listened closely to the versions on the Deluxe Edition, and tried comparing them with the released version on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3. I think that track 10 on CD4 must be the version from the test pressing, which also the book says, but, incorrectly, claims that this version was released on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 in 1991. The version released on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 in 1991 is actually the version recorded on September 16, 1974 (track 11 on CD2), Idiot Wind (Take 6) to be specific]. There is no doubt that the text In The book of the Deluxe Edition is wrong claiming that the test pressing version were released on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3. The version from the test pressing has not been officially released before the release of The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 this November. I hope this resolves the issues that emerged around which versions of Idiot Wind are on what release – and something that should be pointed out on your site?"
So, the original 1974 version of Blood On The Tracks can almost be assembled as follows:
Side 1: Tangled Up In Blue (CD5, track 2, 6:51, recorded 19 Sep 1974); Simple Twist of Fate (CD5, track 5, 4:22, recorded 19 Sep 1974); You're A Big Girl Now (CD3, track 3, 4:23, recorded 17 Sep 1974); Idiot Wind (CD5, track 10, 8:52, recorded 19 Sep 1974); You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go (CD4, track 2, 3:25, recorded 17 Sep 1974 - the released version was edited to 2:58)*
Side 2: Meet Me In The Morning (CD2, track 5, 5:43, recorded 16 Sep 1974 - the released version was edited to 4:19)*; Lily, Rosemary And The Jack Of Hearts (CD1, track 11, 9:49, recorded 16 Sep 1974); If You See Her, Say Hello (CD4, track 13, 3:26, recorded 19 Sep 1974); Shelter From The Storm (CD3, track 15, 5:02, recorded 17 Sep 1974); Buckets Of Rain (CD4, track 12, 3:23, recorded 19 Sep 1974)
All recorded A&R Recording Studios, New York, 16-19 Sep 1974.
The revised version of Blood On The Tracks released in early 1975 can almost be assembled as follows:
Side 1: Tangled Up In Blue (CD6, track 6, 5:47, recorded Sound 80 Studio, Minneapolis, MN, 30 Dec 1974); Simple Twist of Fate (CD5, track 5, 4:22, recorded A&R Recording Studios, New York, 19 Sep 1974); You're A Big Girl Now (CD6, track 5, 4:38, recorded Sound 80 Studio, Minneapolis, MN, 27 Dec 1974); Idiot Wind (CD6, track 4, 7:53, recorded Sound 80 Studio, Minneapolis, MN, 27 Dec 1974); You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go (CD4, track 2, 3:25, recorded 17 Sep 1974 - the released version was edited to 2:58)*
Side 2: Meet Me In The Morning (CD2, track 5, 5:43, recorded A&R Recording Studios, New York, 16 Sep 1974 - the released version was edited to 4:19)*; Lily, Rosemary And The Jack Of Hearts (CD6, track 7, 8:59, recorded Sound 80 Studio, Minneapolis, MN, 30 Dec 1974); If You See Her, Say Hello (CD6, track 8, 4:44, recorded Sound 80 Studio, Minneapolis, MN, 30 Dec 1974); Shelter From The Storm (CD3, track 15, 5:02, recorded A&R Recording Studios, New York, 17 Sep 1974); Buckets Of Rain (CD4, track 12, 3:23, recorded A&R Recording Studios, New York, 19 Sep 1974)
* longer versions of these tracks on the 1974 test pressing and 1975 released album
Terry Harvey adds re the various versions of Meet Me In The Morning: "As well as missing 40 seconds at the start, I noticed further editing to the single CD The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 version in that the fourth verse has been cut out, rather like the editing done to the track that appeared on 1974's Blood On The Tracks and the 1973 test pressing. Until I took a more detailed listen to these tracks I didn’t realise what a bad editing job was done on the beginning of the single CD track. They tried to tidy up the untidy start by making it more untidy. Starting it at the beginning of a bar (or possibly fading it in - although I’m not a fan) would have been more satisfactory. Another comment. Take 1 of this track on CD2 Track 5 of the The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 Deluxe Edition has other differences to the Blood On The Tracks/Test Pressing version apart from the “additional” verse. As well as having six verses, (verse four having been excised) the instrumental coda is longer and different. Blood On The Tracks has the equivalent of a one verse coda whereas the The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 Deluxe Edition has two which play to a stop, and the guitar solo is different."
Terry Harvey adds re the various versions of Tangled Up In Blue: "
The More Blood, More Tracks booklet states that the remixed Test Pressing track (Take 3 Remake 2) and Tangled on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 are one and the same. This is of course wrong. Olof Bjoerner’s 1973 File repeats this mistake. Your 2012 Gem page cites the 16 September Take 1 as The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 Tangled, as does Les Kokay in Isis 203 (as does Krogsgaard as serialised in "The Telegraph", although I don’t know if this has been updated). This is also wrong. The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 track is the More Blood, More Tracks 17 September Take 3 Remake - Disc 3, Track 11. I have checked it word for word and it’s definitely the same track. I always wondered why it seemed to start slightly late on Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 and various bootleg copies and we can now hear that the More Blood, More Tracks version has a messy start which was chopped off for The The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3. The only difference I can discern between More Blood, More Tracks and The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 is that there is a slight edit on the More Blood, More Tracks version which halves the instrumental break between verses 3 and 4 (why???)."For the alternate take released as a 7" single B-side see 2012.
The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 6CD version
Titles in GREEN were previously released on earlier official Dylan albums and singles, although they are now in remixed/remastered form.
Titles in BLUE are also on the single CD set The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 - More Blood, More Tracks (Standard Edition).
Because this is a Strictly Limited Edition the other tracks are rarities, and are listed in 2018.

Meet Me In The Morning (Take 1) – with band, full version (5:43), the version included on
Blood on the Tracks test pressing and previously released on Blood on
the Tracks was edited (4:19)
Harald Sigvartsen says: "The book correctly says that
this is the full version of the song, but doesn’t say why the edited
version, which were on both the test pressing and the final version of
Blood On The Tracks in 1975, is omitted from the Deluxe Edition. This
means that the test pressing version is still only released on Blood On
The Tracks. This fact should be pointed out, as the impression was that
everything from the 1974 sessions were to be released on the Deluxe
Edition."

on the Jerry Maguire original soundtrack, 1996 (R-0250)
Apparently R-0250 was mixed to make the piano accompaniment barely
audible - it is much more prominent on the 2018 released version of the same
take.

Buckets Of Rain (Take 1) – with bass (2:57)
11.
Tangled Up In Blue (Take 3, Remake) – with bass (6:44), previously released on The

Both Harald Sigvartsen, Per Jakobsen and Terry Harvey agree that CD3 track 11
(take 3 remake) is the version on The Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3 CD2
track 18! This is at odds with the liner notes (see above).

Harald Sigvartsen says: "You're
Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go (Take 1, Remake 2) is said to be the one
used on the final album, and thus the test pressing. This is almost correct.
It is this take that were used on both test pressing and final album, but
the version on the Deluxe Edition is actually an unfaded, 30 seconds longer,
version of the song (probably the original version) . This means that also
this song isn’t represented with its test pressing/original album version in
the box set. [I checked with the labels of the test pressing and the
original album from 1975.] I think that this is worth mentioning on your
site, as this fact must have slipped the producers of the new Bootleg Series
release."

1974) but not the take previously released on The Bootleg
Series, Vols. 1-3: Rare and Unreleased, 1961-1991
The previous statement that both these takes were the same is incorrect. My
earlier information was that Take 1 from 16 Sep 1974 was released on The Bootleg Series, Vols. 1-3,
while the take released on the Blood on
the Tracks test pressing was Take 1 from 19 Sep 1974 (CD5, track

Up To Me (Take 2, Remake 3) – with bass (6:24), previously released on Biograph
Thanks to Fred Muller for pointing out that the recording date on
Biograph and bobdylan.com is 25 Sep 1974. This cannot possibly be
correct. The only New York recording session after 19 Sep 1974 documented by
Michael Krogsgaard is an overdub session for Idiot Wind on 8 Oct 1974 by
Paul Griffin on organ. However, this mistake may have occurred because the
first test pressing is dated "9/25/74" (see
1974). Michael Krogsgaard's 1988
book "Master of the Tracks" gives the recording date of the released take of
Up To Me as 25 Sep 1974, but in his article "Bob Dylan: The Recording
Sessions (Part 3)" in "The Telegraph" 55, Summer 1996, he revised the date
to 19 Sep 1974. Thanks to Harald Sigvartsen for reminding me that this
version has a five second intro not present on the Biograph version.

The earlier statement that both these takes were the same is
incorrect. My
previous information was that Take 4 from 19 Sep 1974 was released on The Bootleg Series, Vols. 1-3,
while the take released on the Blood on
the Tracks test pressing was actually Take 6 from 16 Sep 1974,
overdubbed on 8 Oct 1974. This is wrong - CD5, track 10 is the track from
the test pressing! We now know that CD5 track 10 (take 4, remake) with organ
overdub, and the version on the test pressing are the same take.

There is also a small MP3 download insert which is plain white on the rear - the download code has been obscured on the scan. "14552" is printed in the top right hand corner, missing from the European version below. The records of Gerd Rundel's copy have matrix numbers: Side 1 - 18-0265 19075858971 - A (handwritten), MPO 18 40628 (stamped), Side 2 - 18-0265 19075858971 - B (handwritten), MPO 18 40536 (stamped), Side 3 - 18-0265 19075858971 - C (handwritten), MPO 18 41510 (stamped), Side 4 - 18-0265 19075858971 - D (handwritten), MPO 18 40647 (stamped). There is also handwritten "RKS" and stamped "STERLING" in the vinyl on each side. This means that the records were mastered by recording engineer Ryan K Smith of Sterling Sound, Edgewater, NJ.

The European 2LP set again comes in a wide sleeve holding both LPs with a front sticker. The inner sleeves are the same as those of the US release. The four page 12" insert has different copyright text on bottom right of the rear (see detail scan below), but otherwise it's the same as that of the US release. This European copy comes also with the MP3 download insert (again plain white on the rear) but the small number "14552" at front top right is missing. |

"Blood On The Tracks" - 12" stereo test pressings, Columbia/Legacy 19075931221 (USA)/ Columbia/Legacy/Sony Music 19075931221 (Europe), 13 Apr 2019:
Columbia/Legacy 19075931221 (USA) - front scan by Colin Hindson |
Thanks to Fred Muller and Bob Meyer for news that the 1974 Blood
On The Tracks test pressing will be released on vinyl on Record
Store Day, 13 Apr 2019. This will be an exact reproduction of the 1974 disc with
the original mixes (not included on the Deluxe Edition of The Bootleg
Series Vol. 14 - More Blood, More Tracks in 2018, almost certainly
deliberately) and be limited to 7500 copies worldwide. This will be the first time that the
award-winning liner notes by Pete Hamill will actually describe the
takes that are on the album! For full details see 2019. Thanks to Colin Hindson and Hermann Rechberger for information and scans. |

Thanks to Ward Whipple for spotting an anomaly in book 2 on the page with the pocket for CD5. Although the illustration of a tape reel has "Bob Dylan" and "GRAND MASTER" at top left, it also has "BL 38862" and "MONEY" at top right. In fact, "BL 38862" is the matrix number of Side 2 of Eddie Money's album Where's The Party (Columbia FC 38862), released in 1983. This implies the tape reel picture has been "mocked up" for the Bootleg Series package. |

The box and the two books for Sony Music SICP 31211-6 were imported from the USA. These scans by "Merurido" were found on www.discogs.com by Sonny Boy McFitzson. I assume the rear and spine scans are actually of a wrap-around obi. Sonny Boy McFitzson has the following comments on the Japanese language booklet:
pg2: It says below Disc5 tracklisting
*Please note Disc5 tracks 3&10 are described as Previously Released in the English liner notes but are actually Previously Unreleased.
However there is no further information in the Japanese exclusive text specifying the previously released takes.
pg3-7: Intro by Ben Rollins/ “Have you ever even listened to these?” by Jeff Slate
pg8-19: Track by Track descriptions
pg20: Summarized Bob Dylan Chronicles 1974 by Heckel Sugano
pg21: STORIES IN THE PRESS intro by Ben Rollins
pg22 (bottom): The whole English texts translated by Heckel Hugano
pg23-27: Essay by Kenta Hagiwara, Sep 2018 (where he points out the misinformation on Tangled Up In Blue and Idiot Wind.)
pg28-46: Officially registered lyrics, no variations printed.
The 1974 version of Spanish Is The Loving Tongue is a full lyrics take minus a verse. The "Moonlight in the patio" verse isn't sung but is on The Basement Tapes version.
pg47-48: Bobtalks transcribed and translated by Yuriko Banno.
Thanks to Bill Hester, Gerd Rundel and Sonny Boy McFitzson for information and scans.
