The Bootleg Series Vol. 15 - Travelin' Thru 1967-1969 (2019)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

Revised 16 September, 2024.

The 2CD version of this album was released in the USA and Europe on 19 Jun 2020 and the 2LP version on 10 Jul 2020, the Japanese 2CD release on 8 Jul 2020. Badlands in the UK are offering the 2LP version of Rough And Rowdy Ways in olive-green vinyl while JPC in Germany are offering the set in yellow-gold vinyl. These are indeed two distinct coloured versions for independent stores only. Harold Lepidus confirms independent stores in the USA are offering the olive-green version as well. The CD and vinyl Limited Editions both include an A5 art print of the cover photo, which is a colourised version of a black-and-white shot by Ian Berry taken in 1964 in an underground club principally for black people in Cable Street, East London, aimed at the Windrush Generation of Afro-Caribbean immigrants to the UK. Cable Street was best known for "the Battle of Cable Street", a clash between members of Oswald Moseley's British Union of Fascists and anti-fascist protestors on 4 Oct 1936. Online claims that the cover photo was taken in a chitlin circuit venue, or juke joint, in the United States, are wrong, and the photo has been previously used on a UK "Mojo" magazine cover CD. The official Bob Dylan shop in the UK is offering a "lobby card" with the black vinyl edition. Lobby cards were typically 11" x 14" or 8" x 10" in size and used to promote films - a series of eight stills from a current or upcoming film would be displayed in the lobbies of cinemas in order to tempt potential customers to see the picture. This lobby card will be 10" x 8" (25cm x 20cm). The font used for the album title is either Latin #2 Compressed or Latin Compress.

Both the 2CD and 2LP sets are housed in gatefold sleeves. The album consists of ten songs and lasts around 71 mins. Of the three songs released earlier (see below), I Contain Multitudes and False Prophet are on CD1/Record 1, while Murder Most Foul (16:53) is on CD2 and one side of Record 2 on its own.

The title of the album is taken from a 1929 Jimmie Rodgers 78 rpm single B-side, My Rough And Rowdy Ways, Victor 22220 (USA), and later the title track of an album My Rough & Rowdy Ways, RCA Victor RPM-2112 (USA), 1960. It's also included on the 2013 RCA/Legacy 2CD set The Essential Jimmie Rodgers, but not on the 1997 single CD compilation with the same name. Thanks to Rod MacBeath for finding two 1998 compilations from Yazoo in the USA called My Rough And Rowdy Ways: Early American Rural Music - Badman Ballads And Hellraising Songs Vols. 1 & 2 (YAZOO 2039 and 2040). Neither actually contains the Jimmie Rodgers song.

From left to right: Jimmie Rodgers; Maybelle (Addington) Carter, wife of Ezra "Eck" Carter and mother of Helen, June and Anita; Alvin Pleasant "A. P." Carter, Sara (Dougherty) Carter, wife of A. P. and Maybelle's cousin.

The gatefold sleeve inside photo is again colourised, this time a famous shot of Jimmie Rodgers with the Carter Family taken on Main Street, Louisville, KY, 10 Jun 1931. The sepia coloured full frame shot comes from the book included with the 2011 Bear Family Germany 5CD boxed set The Bristol Sessions 1927-28: The Big Bang of Country Music with tracks recorded at Victor Records, Bristol, TN. The photo in black-and-white is on the front of the Carter Family album Sunshine In The Shadows (Rounder Records, USA, 1996, reissued by Reborn Recordings in 2019). Advance photos show the coloured vinyl editions of the album in a different inside gatefold sleeve from that of the black vinyl edition, with a different crop of the photo. However, all commercial copies of the album now come in exactly the same sleeve, the one shown for the coloured vinyl copies.

Three tracks from the album were released early online: Murder Most Foul (27 Mar 2020), I Contain Multitudes (17 Apr 2020) and False Prophet (8 May 2020). Although Bob described Murder Most Foul as "This is an unreleased song we recorded a while back that you might find interesting" and the lyrics refer to the assassination having taken places "fifty years ago" (2013), best information is that all this set was recorded at Sound City or Groove Masters Studios, Los Angeles, CA, in Jan-Feb 2020. Speculation that the album contains some previously unreleased songs from Bob's 21st Century recording sessions appears unfounded.

CD and Vinyl Tracklist:

CD1:
I Contain Multitudes; False Prophet*; My Own Version Of You; I've Made Up My Mind To Give Myself To You; Black Rider; Goodbye Jimmy Reed**; Mother Of Muses; Crossing The Rubicon; Key West (Philosopher's Pirate).

Bob's 2022 live shows included all nine of these songs!

CD2:
Murder Most Foul.

This song has not been performed live.

LP1
Side 1 - I Contain Multitudes; False Prophet*; My Own Version Of You. Side 2 - I've Made Up My Mind To Give Myself To You; Black Rider; Goodbye Jimmy Reed**.

LP2
Side 1 - Mother Of Muses; Crossing The Rubicon; Key West (Philosopher's Pirate). Side 2 - Murder Most Foul.

*Sonny Boy McFitzson says that verses six and seven from the published lyrics of False Prophet are reversed.

**He adds that Goodbye Jimmy Reed was probably inspired by Jimmy's 1958 song Down In Virginia (Vee-Jay Records VJ 287). It can also be found on the 1969 Bluesway album Down In Virginia.

"Goodbye Jimmy Reed, and everything within ya
Can't you hear me calling from down in Virginia?"

Vee-Jay Records VJ 287 (USA, 1958) - 78 rpm single

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for news and pictures of what looks like a Japanese Rough And Rowdy Ways cassette in a clear case with an insert with handwritten song titles on the inside. It's actually a phone charger!

The text on the front sticker says "Cassette Tape Shaped Mobile Battery Charger"

Additional merchandising found by Sonny Boy McFitzson: Rough And Rowdy Ways T-shirt, front and back; Rough And Rowdy Ways Car Licence Plate Holder; ad for the Lobby Card draw in Canada from the web-site of "The Province", Vancouver, BC, 26 Jun 2020. The same post was shared by "National Post", "Ottawa Citizen", "Ottawa Sun", "Calgary Herald", "Winnipeg Sun", "Windsor Star", "The Vancouver Sun", "Edmonton Journal", "Saskatoon StarPhoenix" and "Montreal Gazette".

Thanks to Harold Lepidus, Dag Braathen, Colin Hindson, Steve Perrin, Sonny Boy McFitzson, Gerd Rundel, Stacy Stephens and Éamonn Ó Catháin for information.

Fred Muller's black vinyl copy bought in New Zealand has records made in Europe as the other copies shown here. There are unconfirmed reports that a number of coloured vinyl releases have labels on the wrong sides on Record 1 - Record 2 is apparently OK.

The rear sleeves of the coloured vinyl editions have stickers over the barcodes, so one sleeve with catalogue number and barcode "19439780991" was printed for all four releases.

Columbia/Sony Music 19439783301 (Europe) - gold vinyl:

Columbia/Sony Music 19439783301 (Europe) - picture from JPC.DE (gold vinyl)

European "gold" vinyl copies have a sticker with "LIMITED EDITION YELLOW VINYL" as below, whereas copies sold in the USA have a sticker with "LIMITED EDITION GOLD VINYL" and a different catalogue number.

Columbia/Sony Music 19439783321 (Europe) - yellow vinyl:

Columbia/Sony Music 19439783321 (Europe) - front with sticker, scan by Gerd Rundel (yellow vinyl)

This is the European yellow vinyl copy. It has a yellow sticker on the front and a "19439783321" barcode sticker on the rear. The inside of the gatefold sleeve is the same for all copies. There is a "We are vinyl" insert with a download code (obscured).

Columbia/Sony Music 19439783421 (Europe) - olive vinyl:

Columbia/Sony Music 19439783421 (Europe) - front with sticker, scan by Sonny Boy McFitzson (olive vinyl)

The European olive green copy has an olive green sticker on the front and a "19439783421" barcode sticker on the rear. It appears that the copies to be sold in Japan will be imported from Europe, although the picture found by Sonny Boy McFitzson seems to show the records are in lighter green vinyl than the expected olive green. Michel Pomarede's "olive green" copy shown is actually in mottled gold/olive green, not pure olive green as shown in the advance photo and as Gerd Rundel's copy.

CD Releases

"Rough And Rowdy Ways" - 2CD sets, Columbia 19439780982 (USA/Canada), 19 Jun 2020:

Columbia 19439780982 (USA), 19 Jun 2020:

Columbia 19439780982 (USA) - front with sticker, scan by Jens Winter

All 2CD releases of the album come in a folded card sleeve with two pockets for the discs. On the US and European sleeve these pockets open from the inside centre of the unfolded sleeve. The front of the card sleeve has a clear sticker on the shrink-wrap. The US CDs were made in Germany but have the US FBI Anti-Piracy warning to the left of the centre hole. Gerd Rundel's copy has two discs that are the same colour as the Canadian and European discs - CD1 yellow and CD2 olive. The discs of Jens Winter's copy are both approximately the same colour - this must be a factory error.

This Canadian release comes in the US card sleeve illustrated above, with what looks like the same front sticker. The discs are unique to Canada but like the US discs were made in Germany.

The European 2CD release just has "Made in the EU" on the sleeve and discs, which were probably also made in Germany. Sony's CD plant was previously situated in Austria.

Thanks to David Abarca Esteve for news that FNAC in Spain are selling the 2CD version of the album with a pack of coasters (posavos). David McBride has found an eBay seller asking €39.99 for one of these, something you can buy new for €15.99! It's not even a promo, just a regular purchase, so he's misrepresenting the item.

Columbia/Sony Music 19439780982 (Australia/NZ) - front of sealed copy with sticker, scan by Bill Hester

This copy was bought in Wellington, New Zealand. There was no art print or lobby card. Both the rear sleeve and the CDs have "Distributed in Australia by Sony Music Entertainment Pty Ltd." On the inside sleeve of my European copy the pockets for the discs are accessible from the centre, on the Australian copy they are accessible from the outside edges with noticeable curved lines in the centre. The US and Canadian sleeves appear to be similar to mine.

There were two slightly different editions released in Japan - the Limited Edition comes with a voucher to win a signed lobby card, the Standard Edition does not. The front of the obi says:

"Dylan proves being Dylan. The first album of original songs after receiving The Nobel Prize in 2016! Rough and ROADY Ways.
Commentaries: Heckel Sugano, Kenta Hagiwara transcribed and translated: Goro Nakagawa".

The obi has a release date of "20-7-8" (8 Jul 2020), an original release date of "20-6-19" (19 Jun 2020) and a withdrawal date of "21-3-7" (7 Mar 2021). Purchasers can send in vouchers to enter a draw to win a lobby card signed by Bob (apparently Bob has signed thirteen of them and Norwegian store Platekompaniet is also offering a chance to win one). On the Limited Edition obi "BOB DYLAN" is in white on a black background, but on the Standard Edition obi "BOB DYLAN" is in black.

Sonny Boy McFitzson has found a copy of the Limited Edition on the Internet with a promo sticker on the rear of the card sleeve. The front with the Limited Edition obi is as shown above left. This copy also has "SAMPLE LOANED" in the centre of the CD.

Japanese retailers are also offering bonuses: thin plastic sheet holders for Murder Most Foul (Tower Records) and False Prophet (HMV) or a postcard (other shops). They are not offering unsigned copies of the lobby card or the art print in Japan. "BOB DYLAN The New Album" is directly printed on to the bonus postcard, there is no clear sticker attached to the front of the sleeve as with other releases. The voucher and booklet are originally placed in the CD1 pocket. The CDs have "SONY MUSIC" instead of "COLUMBIA",

The Japanese language booklet has:
Pg.3-15: Rough and Rowdy chronicles from 27 Mar to 8 May, by Heckel Sugano. He guesses the album was recorded at Groove Masters Studio, Santa Monica, Jan-Feb, 2020.
The picture on page 15 has four copies/two variations of the olive green poster, location unknown.
Pg.16-24 track by track essay by Kenta Hagiwara

At the bottom of pg. 51 it says: "All lyrics were transcribed and translated except False Prophet and Murder Most Foul are officially registered lyrics". However, Sony Music Japan announced on 10 Jul 2020: "We are preparing a revised booklet with the official lyrics replacing transcribed lyrics, by sending in the lobby card voucher."! The now released Standard Edition contains the revised booklet. The back page of the Standard Edition Japanese language booklet is also different, with the picture of John F. Kennedy used for Murder Most Foul replacing the page of 2010s Dylan albums.

Purchasing at Tower Records Online includes entering a draw for the poster for 20 winners. Tower Records Shinjuku Tokyo and Tower Records Marubiru Osaka are displaying photo panels until 19 July 2020 as part of their Rough and Rowdy Ways promotions.

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for information and scans.
