The Bootleg Series Vol. 17 - Fragments: "Time Out of Mind!" Sessions (1996-1997)

This page is part of a list of original releases by release date of international commercially-released regular stereo Dylan albums. They do not contain rarities or obscurities and are not eligible for the Searching For A Gem list. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo releases of regular albums are now listed here and no longer in the former yearly Promo sections.

If you have any entries to add to the list or additions/corrections to existing entries, please let me know! Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Revised 16 September, 2024.

Thanks to Fred Muller, Sergio Mariano Romay and André Wilbers for news that the audio from the 2021 video Shadow Kingdom, originally released on 18 Jul 2021, will be released as a 2LP set in the USA on Record Store Day, 22 Apr 2023. The performance will be on Sides 1-3, Side 4 will have an etched design. It will be released in Europe on vinyl and CD on 2 Jun 2023. Catalogue number: Columbia/Legacy 19658767481 (USA)

Set list:

The band on stage was Alex Burke, Shahzad Ismaily, Janie Cowen, Buck Meek and Joshua Crumbly. However, it is reported that these young musicians only mimed and the tracks were actually recorded in a Los Angeles Studio in May 2021 with different performers. The location of the show is given as the "Bon Bon Club, Marseilles, France", but this is entirely fictional! The tracks are rumoured to have been recorded at Village Studios in West Los Angeles, CA, where Planet Waves was recorded in Nov 1973. The actual performers were: Greg Leisz (guitar, dobro, mandolin and pedal steel guitar), Jeff Taylor (accordion)Tim Pierce (guitar), T-Bone Burnett (guitar), Ira Ingber (guitar) [also played on Something's Burning, Baby and Danville/Brownsville Girl during the Empire Burlesque sessions], Doug Lacy (accordion), Don Was (bass).

There were 33 songs in total, and out-takes include: Dignity; If Not For You; If You See Her, Say Hello; Love Minus Zero/No Limit; Oh Sister; Saving Grace; Shooting Star; Simple Twist Of Fate.

The Ionic Originals may be out-takes from these sessions because both were engineered by Mike Piersante.

Thanks to Éamonn Ó Catháin for pointing out that "Masterpiece" in When I Paint My Masterpiece is misspelled "Masterpiecce" on the LP set rear sleeve. Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for also spotting that Most Likely You'll Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine) is mistitled as "Most Likely Ya'll Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)".

Sierra's Theme here is 4:23, a longer version of R-2355, the 2:07 instrumental from the 2021 video. For details of the 2021 video, see VHS & DVD 2020s. The Shadow Kingdom video will be available for download or rental from 6 Jun 2023, but not as a Blu-ray or DVD.

Contents of the Japanese booklet:
pg.00 track listing
pg.01-07 Liner notes by Heckel Sugano, Apr. 2023
Heckel concludes on pg.06 "These are new studio recordings, filmed later."
pg.08-16 Track by track commentaries by Kenta Hagiwara, Apr. 2023
pg.17-36 English & Japanese lyrics
On pg.36 it says "Lyrics translations: Yoshiaki Sato" as well as the Japanese producer's note: "In this booklet, the actual singing and the published lyrics may differ in many parts. This is due to the policy of using registered lyrics, which we consider to be helpful to understand the work, despite the differences."
pg.37 advert for The Essential Bob Dylan, SICP-31623〜4.

Also shown are five bonus postcards, one of which was given away at random to purchasers of Bob's previous releases in stock (except SICP-31623~4) at Tower Records everywhere and the other supporting shops. These are no longer available. All five say at top right: "Fifth Year of Reiwa* Celebrating His Japan Tour" (*2023). A4-sized posters instead of postcards were exclusively given away at Tower Records Shinjuku, Tower Records Shibuya, and a couple of Japanese online sites.

Thanks to Sonny Boy McFitzson for information and scans.
