This is a separate multi-year list by release date of commercially-released Various Artist stereo compilation albums released in 1998 that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only Bob Dylan performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo-only Various Artist compilation albums with Dylan tracks and Radio Station Albums are included here also. Other International Albums and Compilations are now here:
Revised 16 September, 2024.

Bob's
contribution to this fourth Sixties compilation in the series was Lay, Lady, Lay from Nashville Skyline
on CD2. Amazon UK gives the release dates as 10
Nov 1997 for the third compilation and 3 Nov 1997 for the fourth, which must
be wrong as the fourth has a later catalogue number and dates from 1998. For the third edition of this series see the 1997 page of this Various Artist Compilations list. |

performances from the 1963 and 1964 Newport Folk Festivals, including
performances by Bob with Pete Seeger and Joan Baez, so full details are in 1998. Unlike the previous release above (VMD 79510), the European release was made in the UK. |

Various Artists - "Go For 1998 With A Pocket Full Of Hits!" - promo compilation CD, Columbia (no catalogue number) (Germany), 1998:
Various Artists - "Sounds Of The Sixties - 1963: Year Of Satire, Sensational And Scandal" - compilation 3CD set, Readers' Digest RDCD 2191-3 (UK), 1998:
This 1963 3CD set in the Reader's Digest series Sounds Of The Sixties comes in a double-width CD jewel case. As far as I know the other sets in the series do not include Bob, although the 3CD set 1965: Pop And Protest In A Watershed Year includes Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds.
Bob's contribution is on CD3 and bizarrely is It Ain't Me, Babe from the 1964 album Another Side Of Bob Dylan. It was performed live before the album's release, but only at the concert at the Royal Festival Hall, London, 17 May 1964, so does not qualify as a 1963 song. A song from 1963's The Freewheelin Bob Dylan would have been more appropriate.
Thanks to Peter Oudejans for information and scans.
Various Artists - "The All Time Greatest Rock Songs - Ils Ont Écrit La Légende Du Rock! [They Wrote The Legend Of Rock!]" - promo compilation CD, Sony Music Entertainment/Versailles/East West France PROC 95 431 (France), 1998:

Sony Music Media/Warner Special Marketing 492510 2 (Germany) -

Bob's contribution to this 2CD compilation, from which the above French promo CD is a selection, is again Like A Rolling Stone from Highway 61 Revisited on CD1. The liner notes are by ex-Rolling Stone Bill Wyman. Ger Hemel's copy was released on the Columbia label in association with Warner Special Marketing. Peter Oudejans' copy was released on the Sony Music Media label, again in association with Warner Special Marketing. The front inserts appear to be the same.

The artwork for the US, Canadian and German commercial releases are virtually identical apart from the Canadian catalogue number. The German release was distributed throughout Europe and had no front info sticker like the US release. The Canadian and Australian releases had no front sticker either.

This 2CD compilation was released with two slightly different front designs and different catalogue numbers. "PMFM 92.9" is a radio station from Perth, Western Australia. In other Australian states this set was distributed as "Triple M" as a 1988 vinyl compilation in this section. The radio station logos at top right of the front insert are different. Both sets were manufactured in Australia by Sony Music Entertainment (Australia) Limited. |

Various Artists - "And The Times They Were A-Changin’" - Dylan covers compilation, Débutante DeLuxe 555 431-2 (UK), 1998, re-released 2005:

This compilation
contains Nuggets Of Rain by Bette
Midler, from her Atlantic album Songs For The
New Depression, recorded at Secret Sound Studios, New York, Oct 1975,
with Bob sharing vocals. Because this is a rarity, full details are in
1998. For details of the original
Bette Midler album, see
1976. The album was released in 1998 in both a jewel case and a digipak. It was re-released in 2005 with the same catalogue number but new artwork. |

Various Artists - "Ready Steady Go! The Number One Sixties Album Volume II" - compilation 2CD set, PolyGram TV 565 532-2 (UK/Ireland)/compilation two cassette set, PolyGram TV 565 532-4 (UK/Ireland), 1998:
2CD set - PolyGram TV 565 532-2 (UK/Ireland):
This 2CD/two cassette compilation was inspired by the 1960s ITV UK pop/rock music show "Ready Steady Go!". The 2CD version comes in a slimline double CD jewel case. CD1 is called Sixties Classics and includes I Want You from Blonde On Blonde, All I Really Want To Do by The Byrds and The Mighty Quinn by Manfred Mann. CD2 is called Sixties Love Songs and has no Dylan content.

Various Artists - "Une Rentrée 98 [Back To Work 98]" - CD included with French rock music magazine "Les Inrockuptibles #164", LI 9810 (France), 9-15 Sep 1998:
|
Bob's contribution to this
"Back to Work" September compilation
is Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, the live version from Manchester,
May 1966, from The Bootleg Series Vol. 4: Live 1966, see International
Album Releases. The album was released on 12 Oct 1998, so this was a
preview. I wrongly had this listed before as live from Liverpool, May 1966, the B-side of 1966 I Want You single (R-0054, see 1966). For later releases from "Les Inrockuptibles" with Dylan album tracks see the 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2010 pages of this Various Artists Compilations list. |

Various Artists - "Diamond Cuts" - compilation CD, Hungry For Music HFM 003 (USA), 29 Sep 1998:
This CD of baseball-related songs compiled by Jeff Campbell was released by charity Hungry For Music to benefit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the Jackie Robinson Foundation. Bob's contribution is Catfish, the 1975 out-take from Desire released in 1991 on The Genuine Bootleg Series Vols. 1-3. This track was wrongly listed as a longer edit and therefore a rarity, but it is exactly the same length as on that album, at 2:48.
According to www.amazon.com this CD was re-released on 28 Mar 2000 as Diamond Cuts Vol. 1: Play Ball. ("Play Ball" is the text on the reverse of the rear insert.) There are now seven compilation CDs in the Diamond Cuts series, but none of the subsequent releases feature Bob. For a 2005 4CD set with Catfish entitled The Great American Baseball Set, see the page in this list covering 2005.
Thanks to Freddy Ordoñez Araque for finding this set and to Hans Seegers for scans. Peter Oudejans points out that the copyright date on the rear insert is 1997, but I think the final release date is correct.
Various Artists - "Heartbeat - Love Me Tender: 48 Of The Greatest Love Songs" - compilation 2CD set, Global TV RADCD72 (UK), 18 Oct 1998; compilation two cassette set, Global TV RADMC 72 (UK), 18 Oct 1998:
Global TV RADCD72 (UK) - front of 2CD set, scan by Peter Oudejans |
Bob's contribution to this 2CD/two cassette set is Lay, Lady, Lay from
Nashville Skyline on CD2. Bob's music has featured regularly in this 1960s set series, although it
has only been included in two of the several soundtrack albums that have
been released. For Heartbeat Love Songs, also a 2CD set, see the 2003
page of this Various Artists listing. The CDs have a date of 1997 but the front has text "THE OFFICIAL HEARTBEAT ALBUM 1997-98" so I believe the 1998 release date is correct. |
