This is a separate multi-year list by release date of commercially-released Various Artist stereo compilation albums released in 2009 that have been referred to me but do not qualify for my Searching For A Gem list because they contain only Bob Dylan performances which are available on officially released Dylan albums. Nevertheless, their interest value or scarcity means they're worth listing here - as far as I know some are not included on any other Internet site. Promo-only Various Artist compilation albums with Dylan tracks are now included in this list. Other International Albums and Compilations are now here:

Please note I cannot value your Dylan rarities - see the Mission page for reasons why. Contact the dealers on my Trading page for assistance!

Various Artists - "Watchmen: Music From The Motion Picture" - film soundtrack CD, Reprise/Warner Bros 516751-2 (USA), 3 Mar 2009; Warner Sunrise/Reprise WPCR-13349 (Japan), 25 Mar 2009:

Reprise/Warner Bros 516751-2 (USA) - picture from amazon.com
This film soundtrack album includes The Times They Are A-Changin', Jimi Hendrix's cover of All Along The Watchtower from John Wesley Harding and a cover of Desolation Row from Highway 61 Revisited by My Chemical Romance. It also includes Nina Simone's version of Berthold Brecht's Pirate Jenny, thought to be an inspiration for When The Ship Comes In.

The film "Watchmen" is adapted from the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, and directed by Zack Snyder. The Times They Are A-Changin' is played in full over the opening credits and Desolation Row is played during the closing credits. For DVD releases see VHS & DVD: Films With Dylan Album Tracks 2000s Part 2. The graphic novel, originally published in 1985-86 as a series of comic books, uses quotes from the lyrics of Desolation Row and All Along The Watchtower as chapter headings.

There is also a companion album with the original movie score by Tyler Bates - this has no Dylan content.

Various Artists - "Feel The Difference Of The Blu-spec CD: Rock Selection" - compilation 2CD set, Sony Music SICP 20048-9 (Japan), 4 Mar 2009:

Sony Music SICP 20048-9 (Japan) - front with obi, scan by Hans Seegers

A Blu-spec CD is an audio-only disc which is presumably intended to be Sony's new high quality audio format (it's not actually a Blu-ray disc as previously reported or as stated on the sticker, although it is made with Blu-ray technology). Blu-spec discs are currently available only in Japan. This 2CD compilation promoting the format has the same material on each disc: CD1 is a Blu-spec disc, CD2 is a standard disc.

On CD2 it is the version from the last CD release from 18 Aug 2004 (Sony Music MHCP-372). The obi has budget price ¥1,500 (¥1,429 before tax), release date "09-3-4" (4 Mar 2009) and withdrawal date "09-9-3" (3 Sep 2009). For the second 2CD comparison compilation in this series released in Jul 2009, see below.

Various Artists - "Dylan Mania, Une Collection Obsessionelle De Béatrice Ardisson" - compilation CD, Naïve NS 91579 (France), 5 May 2009:

Naïve NS 91579 (France) - picture from amazon.fr
This French collection of Dylan covers compiled by musician/composer Béatrice Ardisson contains a Dylan track called "Apothecary" (also listed in some sources as "Animals, Birds And Cigarettes") which is Bob's rap outside the pet shop from the 2005 Martin Scorsese No Direction Home documentary (see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 3). As this is a Dylan rarity, full details are in 2009.

The download and CD versions differ in that three tracks are available for download only, whereas several tracks such as A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall by Bryan Ferry are on the CD version only. The three download-only tracks were later released on a bonus disc included with the commercial CD release. The same record company has released a series of Béatrice Ardisson "Mania" compilations including Bowie Mania.

This out-take was originally released on Grandes De La Música: Mitos* Del Rock [Great Figures Of Music: Legends of Rock], a compilation CD given away in 1995 with an issue of "Diário de Noticias [News Diary]", a Spanish newspaper. For more details see Questionable Releases.

*The distinction between “myth” and “legend” made in English isn’t made in other European languages – they’re both types of traditional stories, but basically a “myth” is a story that was never actually true, whereas a “legend” is a story that is based on true events or people. This means an “urban legend” should actually be called an “urban myth”, while Bob’s certainly a legend and definitely not a myth!

The performance on this official album has been professionally remixed and remastered. The song was included in the episode of NCIS broadcast by CBS in the USA on 3 Nov 2009 (Season 7, episode 6 "Outlaws and In-laws"), for the DVD release see VHS & DVD 2000s Part 4. The remaining tracks from this soundtrack album will be placed in NCIS episodes throughout the current season, which ends in May 2010.

The front insert is a single three fold sheet. This release is on CBS Records rather than Columbia because the source is a CBS TV series. For the Hawaii Five-O CBS TV series soundtrack with another Dylan rarity, see 2011. Despite the fact it's from the 1960s, this song turned up again on an Open Records download-only album I Feel Good: 70s Hits in 2012.

For the first compilation in this series from Feb 2009 with Things Have Changed from the Wonder Boys film soundtrack and The Essential Bob Dylan, see above.

Bob performs Do Re Mi by Woody Guthrie, a new recording for this compilation. Because this is a rarity, full details are in 2009.

Other artists include Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder performing Masters Of War, Pink, Randy Newman, Jackson Browne, Taj Mahal and Rich Robinson performing Only A Pawn In Their Game.

Picture from amazon.com

Bob performed two Woody Guthrie songs, Vigilante Man and Do Re Mi, for inclusion in a documentary film project called "The People Speak" to be broadcast on the History Channel in the USA on 13 Dec 2009. The documentary was inspired by two books: "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn (1980, revised edition 2003) and "Voices of A People's History of the United States", edited by Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove (2004). Apparently only Do Re Mi is included in the broadcast, but Vigilante Man may be included in one of a number of supplementary videos which will be made available online. Amazon lists a DVD of “The People Speak” to be released by A&E Home Video on 26 Jan 2010 - more information will be added when available.
